Our family had a '69 VW van and we essentially grew up in it. I learned how to drive a manual with that same set up. And as a kid, I slept in a canvas cot that went over the front seats at night. Thanks for the memories!

We had an old 1970 vw van that my dad converted for the five of us to camp in. Mom, dad and three kids. We did not have a pop top but dad made a hammock for my younger sister. My brother and I slept under the pull out seats. All our luggage went in the front seat when we slept. It didn’t ventilate well so it would rain condensation on us all night. Mostly on my sister and mom and dad. Sleeping under the seats had its advantages, except the sleeping bags still got wet. lol. Even though it was fairly new, it didn’t run very well. It broke down a lot. My sisters first husband had a vw van that barely ran. It was a putt putt for sure. Manual transmission too. The gear stick is long and spindly but pretty sturdy metal. Ours had a basic am radio but dad who was a techie guy installed a cassette player so we could listen to our music. Especially since am radio is notoriously wimpy to try to get a signal from out in the boonies where we camped. lol. Looking forward to more adventures in my old stomping grounds on Vancouver island which is one place our family camped

My dad bought a 69 van like that new when I was 10 so this brought back a lot of memories. I drove it for a few years after he died in 1980 but that engine is the same one they use on the bug, believe it or not, so there was never much power. Those "retro features" that you guys loved so much were a little quaint and bare bones even back then. Thanks so much for making this episode, I really enjoyed it.

Oh my goodness. I lived in a 60's VW camper all across Europe in the early 70's with my family. I slept in the top bunk below the pop top roof, and everyone's breath would condense on the roof and drip onto me. Also, when it was windy, the top would fly up, so my father would pick up hitch hikers to hold the roof down! I was little kid, but I remember this like it was yesterday. My brother slept on the bed that was across the driver's and the front passenger's seats. We traveled from Istanbul to Paris, France. Sometimes we stayed in farmers' fields with the farmers' permission, sometimes we stayed with friends, and sometimes we stayed in hotels, but we mostly stayed in the van. It had no toilet, shower, or running water, but we made it across Europe!
@Theendlessadventure2 ай бұрын
What an amazing adventure!! Definitely one of the coolest ways to explore Europe. We keep hearing people say they slept in a bed across the front seats...we'd never heard of that before, but it sounds like it was perfect for kiddos. Condensation dripping on you while you're sleeping sounds like a common memory as well. We definitely felt a few drops on our feet. 😅 Happy to be part of the VW van adventure family now!

What a trip down memory lane! When I was a kid my parents got a '72 VW camper, similar to this one, except that the pop-up went straight up, not at an angle, and there was a full mattress up there. And over the driver and passenger seats was a small hammock, the perfect size for me to sleep! There was also a commode that had a padded top so it doubled as a chair, and we had a canopy that extended out the side, which was a boon during one of our first camping trips to the NJ shore right before Hurricane Agnes hit the mid-Atlantic area! We usually just used sleeping bags, not sheets and blankets for the bedding, which was easier.

Alison matches the autumn vibe so perfectly, and ya'll are so cute with your Olive VW van. A little story about my grandparents: They owned a VW van back in their day when one morning while they were camping, my grandpa woke up early and was ready to hit the road. However, my grandma was still sleeping in; so instead of waking her up, he decided to get driving and she was literally on the roof of the van holding on for her dear life! Fortunately she survived to tell the story!😘

In 1974, we drove our then-vintage VW bus from Houston to Big Bend National Park for a camping vacation in the "Basin". That bus had a much bigger oil problem than the one you're renting. We had to carry cases of oil and stop every hundred miles or so to top it off. I swear we used a lot more oil than gas but it was a fantastic trip. The big steering wheel and tiny stick make driving those buses a blast!! So glad you're getting to experience that same kind of fun!!

We had a VW Bug when I was in High School (It was actually the car my sister and I both learned to drive in- we had another family car that was a manual as well, but our parents insisted that we try to learn in the Bug because it was easier to shift gears) and we both loved to "prank" our friends with the engine being in the rear, but the trunk being in the front. 🤣
@ohheyitskevinc2 ай бұрын
Fun fact about the VW bus is the air cooled engines pretty much swap out with anything VW from similar years. They’re very easy to fix, but worst case - a good rebuilt engine with warranty is around $6k. I have a yellow ‘72 Westfalia VW camper like Olive that cost around $26k and have so much fun with it down here in NC. It’s so small, you can park up in the smokies on NPS tent pitches. Just park up, throw a cheap tent on the floor outside and do your thing :) I don’t use my upper bunk as it’s a pita to get into, but yep that should fold out.

Loved this episode! We have the same model (but with a proper bed "upstairs"). They can be made to work well for 2 or 4 poeple camping but space is so limited that everything needs to be set up just perfectly for your use - storage solutions, bedding, awning etc etc. You obviously can't do that with a rental, so you will definitely discover lots of limitations and inconvenience!

Good luck with the new van. I owned a variety of VW's in the 60's, 70's and early 80s. The 4 cylinder, air cooled engines do tend to burn oil as they age. Be diligent about adding oil every day. If you find it necessary, perhaps 2x per day depending on the amount of driving you do. I drove a VW Bug to about 200 thousand miles. One morning, heading for work, the engine seized up about 800 yards from our apartment. Dropping a new engine in a bug wasn't too bad. Certainly less money than a new vehicle. Eventually, the body just got too old and rusty. We joked that we had plenty of heat all summer and plenty of cold air all winter. But they are durable.
