The Zero-waste term actually originated for corporations producing the least amount of waste possible (down to zero) by doing things behind the scenes that produced less waste. Only recently that shift was made onto consumers of products instead of corporations. I agree with Jenny though, zero-waste sounds pretty cool and it catches more people's attention. The sad part is the forefront of the movement is "the jar" which is super intimidating. Fortunately people who really care look more into the movement realize it's not just the jar it's so many other aspects.

8:41 Just to let you know, the carton for the block of tofu _can_ be recycled (just check for the little recyclable triangle sign) but they will NOT take it in if it is contaminated with the little flimsy bit of plastic on the top cover layer. This is because something is only recyclable when it contains only *one* type of material and not mixed with other materials such as soft plastic, aluminium, etc. Same for glass jars surrounded by a strip of plastic. So in actuality, takeaway coffee cups that are lined with plastic on the inside is not recyclable and neither are food packages lined with the shiny inner layer of plastic. So maybe next time, you could go that extra mile and strip the box of its plastic and wash out the contents before placing it into the bin to be recycled. Thanks :))))

It also feels like a strangely appropriate time to be discussing this, as making these kinds of small choices now when decreasing waste is both more difficult but also arguably more important will probably make it easier when the world goes back to normal at long last. After all, if the changes are something you can make in spite of the difficulties of quarantine, then it should be even easier when it finally ends, and more options become available, or larger changes easier to make.

if we buy something that's in a plastic container with a resealable lid like a large yogurt container, but we don't throw it out and just continuously reuse it as food storage or other things, would that be okay? I only bring that up because from my own personal experience from my local Asian supermarkets, the tofu section might have sealed tubs of daily made tofu from a local import. So it would be a plastic container but it can be reused for other things once youve eaten all the tofu. Unlike the plastic sealed boxes of tofu.

One thing I want these "trenders" to address is culturally zero waste has been rooted in Black, Indian, Asian, & Bipoc communities for centuries. It's only now that the faces you see mainly representing this lifestyle are non-poc/white people who act as if this is edgy, and brand new. The same thing happened to veganism, yoga, thrifting, and repurposing household furniture, etc. I'm not saying to gatekeep a workout, but I would strongly advise doing more research into these cultures. I love the steps this video included but when you strip away the culture/heritage behind the movements you lose the meaning and message and we all crave that communalism.

Great job guys! I live in Cambodia and I used to do most of my shopping at the local market bringing my own bags, some of them are made of plastic so I just wash them and use them over and over again. My shopping in food shops used to be of locally made organic peanut butter, spaghetti and pasta though I found excellent Korean organic flour and I was making my own pasta myself. Unfortunately, over a year ago, after a prolonged water fast preceded by two dramatic events who shook me to the core (my beloved dogs died), I was taken to the hospital with strange symptoms. It turns out I gave myself multiple sclerosis so I've been unable to cook and go shopping ever since. Thank God, I'm staying in a gorgeous place surrounded by nature where my Khmer friends and now in particular, a Khmer family is taking care of my needs. I can only eat simple but delicious vegan food. My only wish for me and humanity is to start anew, without never looking back and to be completely fused in the Divine One without any separation! 🥰🤗😆 I forgot to say that I'm gradually but steadily healing myself! TOGETHER WE ARE INVINCIBLE!

One of the switches I made was getting reusable/washable makeup remover rounds. They came with a mess bag that you put the used ones in and then throw them in the washer

Fun fact: many cultures already don’t require any use of plastic utensils because that’s what foods like tortillas, and flatbreads and naans use. #zerowaste It’s the colonizers who looked down upon it.

At the end, i am not entirely sure that the tofu and beyond meat plastic containers are recyclable. At least where i am, those would be “irregularly shaped” and thrown. Also depends if they are not plastics 1 and 2

I was so sad when I couldn't use my reusable bag at the store! Luckily I had a little bit of items so I just carried everything stacked and balanced to my car lol I hope stores start letting us use reusable bags again!!

At my college we can do a take out option and it is supposed to have reusable takeout boxes, but for some reason for the past week they have been using styrofoam. Wish they would go back to the washable ones

If you don't have time to cook at home and want to get takeout chipotle is pretty sustainable! I've personally only gotten a bowl, but they're bowls, spoons, napkins, and straws are biodegradable and no plastic involved. The aluminum cover of the bowl is recyclable but just wash them.:)

I am so happy to see people trying zero waste. I think the pandemic stressed me out in regards Plastic. It takes longer to find alternatives but step by step we make it better 😊.

I want to reduce my waste! I recently made the switch to reusable grocery bags. So many foods at the store come in one time use packaging I am noticing! The next step is learning how to grow my own produce with my own compost.

This is really cool. It has been impossible for us during the pandemic because all of the bulk has been removed from our grocery stores. Even the healthfood stores.

Word of caution if you keep your food scraps in your freezer: don’t let them accumulate and block the vents in your freezer! That can interfere with the functioning, cause water leakage, and invite pests!!! There are compost containers you can keep on your counter

Even if your getting take out, reuse your containers. Something my family does is we all save them over the entire year, come thanksgiving everybody can take home leftovers instead of using tons of paper plates and foil.

Helpful tip ! Buy reusable and refillable lighters to reduce the amount of plastic lighters you use a year.

I live in Australia. Our recycling is confusing so non recyclables end up in recycling and recyclables end up in rubbish (trash). I try to get zero waste when I can but sometimes the zero waste options come with non eco friendly packaging.

I think it’s good to look up what you can swap before you are done with what is plastic like a plastic deodorant to a cardboard one that I’m using I found at the store

I was taking my compost to a community compost but it got trashed. It was a blessing because it was time consuming to take my compost to the bin. I asked my neighbor if I can use his compost bin and he was more than willing to share it with me. So maybe there’s a Neigbbor who will let you use their compost bin.

Every making their best attempt to reduce waste is definitely going to have a more widespread impact than a few people doing it perfectly!
