I used to do 12 mile walks (not every day) and ended up going through a lot of neighborhoods. Luckily my city is on a lake, so I ended up going half way down the water line and back.

A good amount people don't live close enough to bike places! A lot of people do, but they just don't bike. They might take a bus or an uber or something. Or they'll just drive themselves.

Everything is really far apart. Holland - Europe tends to have compact cities because of the long history of fortress towns. So biking and public transit can work well. In the US, there is more spacing between buildings, even in the older city centers. Post WWII the suburbs and car culture really boomed - houses being on lots of 1/4 acre or larger. As population grew and incomes rose, people moved out even further onto larger houses on larger lots. And businesses moved with them, offices and factories. People may have jobs on the other side of the city. Or they may move even further out where property values are lower to get more space for the money. Even in a medium sized city a 20 mile (one way) commute isn't considered long. I've know people to have 80 mile one way commutes. Now remember you have heavy traffic to deal with.

Car mostly, bus, some cities have trains, and walking. Biking is less popular. A lot of cities don’t have consistent bike lanes.

Most states in America doesn’t have a good public transportation system and there are cities that aren’t bike friendly, so a car is a must own possession.

@@ringodax12 that's cause she has an accent. The corrent way of pronouncing kamala is the way swasti said it. And obviously the way the vice president pronounces it is the way that she's grown up with. Still doesn't make it right. But if that's her preferred pronounciation then I respect that.

@@kuhoosahare5625 I have a name that is original to a non-Western country. I pronounce my name slightly differently than how native speakers pronounce it. Not because I can’t pronounce it the original way, but because it’s my and my family’s preference. If someone were to tell me I was pronouncing my OWN NAME wrong, we would have a problem. Kamala is allowed to pronounce her own name the way she likes, and we should respect her choice. That said, I think Swasti’s pronunciation of Kamala is beautiful as well.

Americans on bikes with full on work out clothing always looks funny to me. In Germany and a lot of the other countries around Germany, biking is just normal day to day activity and people use it as a normal form of transportation in the city

In the US it’s not common to ride a bike, the car drivers are not used to it, there aren’t as many or very little bike lines on the road, it’s more dangerous then in Europe because people are simply not used to watching out for bikes when they turn or something else!
