I watch sailing channels on and off. In catching up to you guys, I was pleasantly surprised to see this video on Leopard's hybrid electric boat! I think it's great that travel in general is not only thinking electric but building crafts and vehicles as well. Because these vehicles are large and battery design and capacity are improving for large vehicles, it's understandable they are doing hybrid electric now. Electrification is a long-term challenge. While we're still in the early stages, these are exciting developments when large manufacturers in the travel space (whether boats, RVs, vans, etc) are putting money into development. Great video guys. I'll wait to see if you and/or others have more on electric boats from Annapolis. I wonder how many there will be out there. P.S. Loved your Beryl Grenada hurricane work! Thanks for doing it!

Great video, asking the question how you can you evaluate an ocean-going sailboat when you have not crossed an ocean? Island hopping to Grenada is not the same as sailing to the Azores, respectfully suggesting you get some more sea time before selling yourselves as ocean-yacht evaluators.

I could never buy a Leopard Catamaran after watching KZbin videos of Leopard owners who have experienced nightmare warranty issues with them. Looks like a buyer beware situation.
@southernfriedkiwi77262 ай бұрын
Agreed. Their treatment of their customers, post sale, is absolutely appalling. You really have to look beyond the "shiny" aspects of the boat(any boat), and pay attention to the customers that have problems and how they are treated. These boats, although pretty and well laid out, are essentially mass produced RVs for the charter market. Thus, their QC is seriously lacking.
@AdeboFunkyVoodoo2 ай бұрын
Yep, the designs/layouts are generally nice. But the build quality is a crap shoot and the warranty service a disgrace. Leapords built before they took investor money and focused on quantity not quality are good boats. Anything built after is purchased at your own risk and protracted inconvenience.
@adventurecrewsАй бұрын
Thank you so much for watching and also commenting. I (Cole) would like to personally address this comment. In 2018 a KZbinr brought attention to a major structural issue with his catamaran, and stated all like models would have the same issue. For months, owners hated him and sent him horrible comments and bashed his findings, saying that he was hurting the value of the brand...only to find out what he had to say was true. His findings caused a major recall that ultimately had to be fixed in boats across the world. I say this, to make the point that I never want to discount someone for putting their concerns out to the world because ultimately Colin at Parlay Revival was correct. On the other hand, I also want to put out a “viewer beware” notice, to your above comment. One of the reasons we decided to buy a “production” catamaran is for exactly this reason, there are 1000’s of Leopards on the water today. Many of them have cruised the world on their own hull as has ours. Sure some have had issues...(try finding a boat that hasn’t)...on the same hand there are 1000’s of happy Leopard owners. As an owner, I was also concerned about some of the findings that another owner had, and I understand Leopard/ R&C have looked into many of those issues. What's really concerning is that the snowball has not stopped and the issues keep coming yet they seem to be the only ones with these issues. I believe there are two sides to every story and I also believe numbers speak volumes.
@southernfriedkiwi7726Ай бұрын
@@adventurecrews The issue with Leopard/R&C, isn't with the successful builds. It's how appalling R&C has treated customers POST SALE, regarding warranty work and blatantly trying to "starve out" customers, hoping that the customers will give up and pay out of pocket, just to get on with their lives. A company shows their true colours, when dealing with problems. A lot of owners come off as disingenuous, when they push back against "trouble makers", because it can affect the resale of their own vessels.

It's all about the comfort.... No mention of actual quality or lack of, construction methods, or sailing ability!! But having batteries in the stern and a massive genset 2m. from the bow would suggest weight placement was not a priority. This boat will make a great charter/party boat but definitely dangerous for blue water sailing.... Leopard have a massive amount of work to do it they want to rebuild their shattered reputation. They need to start with better design and quality control during construction.
@sanyaomerovic16592 ай бұрын
They can’t. As far as I understand they are owned by investment firm. Maybe they have “ yacht club” sailor on the board who loves to show off his boat in the marina, ergo the most ridiculous sv design.

Is that the battery box right above the saildrive? Mmmm I'm not liking that battery location. Those rudder posts are notorious for leaking. Don't like battery being right underneath it. Wish they mounted them higher. Or across the bridgedeck between the scoops. I mean, i GET IT. use of space that the engine took up. But too many leaky things in the engine compartments... And then you could build a pretty bulletproof watertight box for them to go in, but then the temps will be higher in the batteries. I dunno... I'm skeptical. I'd have to see it in person 😅

The batteries are in a waterproof box
@svsaguaro2 ай бұрын
@@adventurecrews Ehhh I just don't trust that. And if it's water tight it's air tight. Lots of heat. Not that I can afford a new boat anyway 🤣 It's very cool nontheless! Fun fact: Lagoon 440 originally had a hybrid drive all the way back in 2004, complete with regen from props. Our generator compartment is MASSIVE because it was designed to fit up to a 24kw genset because of the hybrid drive. But it just never worked right. They just didn't have the battery tech we have cheaply available today. They were probably using the Nimh batteries and those things just don't work as well as lithium. Rumor is nobody ever bought them, and the few "demo boats" were gutted and replaced with yanmar/volvo engines. So nice to see we're coming back around to some of this tech FINALLY.

Hmm, to be honest I'm extremely cautious of Leopard catamarans, to say they have had bad press over the last few years is a massive understatement. Ignoring that, 1600w solar is no where near enough, seriously. Unless it's a plug and play boat as in keep in plugged in to mains power to charge overnight and only ever use it for day sailing and an occasional weekend break, then it's fine. As a cruiser, well it's just not. You'd have your generator on every day for hours on end and when it breaks down, which they often do, you'd be royally screwed. As a coastal day sailer its ok, the electric side of it is more of a novelty than an actual solution, hense the full size fuel tanks, there's a hint LOL.
@sanyaomerovic16592 ай бұрын
@@MarchTwentyfour-t8z True. As soon as he mention generators and fuel tanks, I’ve lost interest. What’s the point of electric motor if you have to use gens to power them? This boat is designed by TikTok designer, not a sailor.

"8 kilowatts" to push that big of a boat at 6 knots???? If you cruise at that rate for an hour, then 8kw hours of total power would be consumed, which at land prices of 20 cents per kilowatt hour would be about $1.60 per hour. This seems impossibly cheap. What am I missing?
