Actually the dishes you had there - ayam masak kicap, gulai nangka, tempoyak - are among the most typical Malay dishes whether in Sarawak or Peninsular Malaysia. Edit : ayam masak kicap = chicken cooked in dark soy sauce; gulai nangka = young jackfruit cooked in coconut curry ; tempoyak = fermented durian

We Kuching people just love Singapore chicken rice haha 😂. If you do try Singapore rice then try it without the chillie and then after try it with chillie. And tell us which one you like haha. Glad you tried Malay dishes in Kuching. Yes, there’re a few differences but not too different from what you can find in the peninsula. 3:58 What Olive has is a typical comfort food for many of us. 😄 Drizzle with a bit of soy sauce. *Slurp! 5:52 Looks like the jackfruit is cooked with fern. Oh man… 😋 6:58 Have you not had “tempoyak” before? It’s available all over M’sia. Back in the days, we don’t have fridges… that’s how we preserved leftover durians. 7:34 If you’re in Sibu, the central market by the river would probably have some wild durians sold there (if durians have started to ripen in that region now). Try one. It’s the small, spikier durian with orange-y flesh.

In Sarawak, all the local ethnic groups and the Malays cook young jackfruit and young cempedak as dishes we eat with rice. So the seeds are very young and edible. I think the mussy durian you are eating may have been tempoyak freshly made since its durian season now. The Malay food in Sarawak is greatly influenced by the fusion of the ethnic dishes so its very different.

The durian curry is called masak tempoyak and is super delicious. You can also get it raw. If you watch the Swedish couple dananna, the lady Anna also likes tempoyak and the guy in Travels on Toast also likes it very much. Beware though as it's often hot ie spicy. To me, it's the best dish or food in the world. Better than the one world's number one dish, rendang. Btw, you should review the Sarawak kek lapis you bought earlier as the cake was featured as one of the baking challenges in an episode of the show The Great British Bake Off. Also you can ask for half rice ie half a portion of rice for the kids. Just say "nasi setengah". Setengah means half.😊

@@yvesthesleeveSarawak is the only region in Malaysia where you don't fine indian or just some India community. The majority population or Sarawak are the Dayaks, follow by the Chinese than the Malay. Much of the population are christian by religion. As for Kuching City, it's the fourth largest city in Malaysia. Unfortunately, things are rather quiet in the CBD after work hours. The hustle bustle after dark are around Tabuan Jaya, Stamping, Batu 3, and around the residential areas.
