Nice video. It was nice seeing a beginner learn the sport unfiltered. I actually thought he made some fast progress for being completely new. Regarding the conclusions, I think winging is good for people with no wind sport experience. You can quickly learn both foiling and how wind sports work. Also, the gear isn't so large that it can be transported in a small car. So there are some advantages on the front end of winging initially. I

I have windsurfed for close to 30 years, and can now wind foil. I'm not sold on the "wing" foil, but it does look like a good alternative for people who just want to get up on a foil and don't have sails, masts, etc. If this had been around when I was younger, I might not have a garage full of sailing gear!

"Super light gear" haha, everything is relative! As a kiter and kite foiler I found the wing board super heavy to drag upwind after my first walk of shame 🤣 For me the attraction of Wing foiling is to be able to surf the waves without a kite pulling you and use the wing to ride back out again. But I first need to learn before I can go out in bigger waves. I will practice at DosMares this summer 🤩
@robsinHL3 жыл бұрын
that... and trying to launch a kite once you go down... especially when water's over your head. Windsurfing is easier to water start too. These boards are much more related to windsurfing than kiteboarding, for better or worse.
@michimo842 жыл бұрын
exactely, wing nowadays makes sense only because of foils, and for the same reason it is limited to foils...if you live on the seaside with nice waves wing is an awesome choice otherwise kiting or windsurfing wins hands down....

Old guy here. 30 seasons of windsurfing and newbie windsurf foiler. If I wasn't already a relatively competent windsurfer wouldn't even consider windsurf foiling, but would have put 100% into wing foiling. JMHO, foiling will get more people onto the water. The expanded wind range with less gear and compact size (even windsurf foil) reduces the hassles and longterm costs. More so for wing foiling than the other foil disciplines. Might consider winging in the future if the wings continue to evolve to a higher performance and durable product. 1st need to become a competent windsurf foiler. Competent = foiling jibes under all conditions.
@christinemurray14442 жыл бұрын
I wonder if there's a decent foil-ready freestyle windsurf board that is also good on the wing? Maybe I can expand my wind range because sometimes I go weeks without getting in the water. Like for instance right now, with around 5~8 knots for days and with an uncomfortable chop for light wind windsurfing.
@noohohno2 жыл бұрын
@@christinemurray1444 Alan Cadiz at HST looks like he start his students out on large floaty boards when first learning to handle a wing. People with minimal board riding skills he sticks on SUPs with a daggerboard. Robert Stehlik at Blue Planet Surf has useful wing tutorials. One demonstrates wing control using a a land skateboard. JMHO, like in windsurfing rig control is key to progression. Guessing a small to medium board with a sturdy DT box or twin track would be fine for beginners with board riding skills. 5-8kts I'm foiling using a 5.5M sail and large, but slower than slow foil (SS HG 84). 5kts requires effort to pop up on the foil. 7kts is a 2-3 easy pumps.

As you work for Starboard it could be cool to have a review on the windsups they have! I know they are maybe not as cool as traditional boards but they might bring people to windsurfing like Ben Proffit talked in one video. Like could a windsup be a windsurf alternative for light wind fun? If you are not in to foils, wings and so on.

I've found that for me when using the Starboard/Airush 6m, I can hold the second loop with my front arm and the last loop with my rear arm to be the most effective and being able to straighten my arms completely, just using my shoulders to adjust the tension/angle. Helps a lot to not get too tired in my arms.

I have a Hypernut 4-in-1 that I windfoil (not winging it yet) and wavesail. It's not very efficient because of low volume and lots of rocker. But it does make for a great board to always bring to the beach.

Nothing beats kite foiling for light winds. Wing is fun when you have more then 15 knots

Does it get tiresome to hold the wing? With windsurfing the sail is obviously heavier but most of the weight is transferred to the board via the mast, and with a harness it’s your body weight that counter balances the wind load

I'm windfoiling using the same small wavesails (5,5m2 flying in 12 knots with big 1600cm2 foil). IMO there are two reasons to go for wingfoiling: I hate uphauling and more difficult to get into the shore break with windfoiling

I hate when long time windsurfers try wing foil once and then say its not as exciting as windsurfing. well no shit being a beginner kook winger is less exciting then being a pro windsurfer. That's not comparing apples to apples. spend some time getting good at it learn to jibe, tack, wave ride, jump then make the comparison . How about this, compare your first day on a windsurfer to your first day on a wing. then compare your 5th day on a wing to your 30th day on a windsurfer, wing win 100000% of the time. How did a small mind guy like this ever learn to windsurf in the first place. 100% he is a trust fund kid as well, like 90% of the pro windsurfs I use know in maui, epically the race crowd, hookipa chargers a 50% a different crowd
