@Alexander Supertramp It's true that a better violin is better, I mean a Stradivarius is way better than my baby (sorry my precious but you're still the best in my heart). But it's also true that an "average" violin can sound way better depending on who plays it.

for anyone who doesn't understand why they're being so careful with their bows, its because each of their bows probably cost around anywhere from $150 - $1000. Probably more, actually, as $300- $800 would be just a cheap student bow.

their bows are probably even more expensive than that... idk if I'm just a "idgaf" guy about the things i bought for myself or something but I bought a cheap e guitar for 150€ (that's the most money I've ever spent on luxury stuff...I don't have a lot of money) and I'm obviously not throwing it around like a weird m o n k e but if i bonk it against my desk or chair and there's a new dent in it I don't really care because...well even tho it's a lot of money for me...this is the lowest end of a playable electric guitar. Now. If this guitar would be 15,000€ (I doubt their bows are THAT much but this is for demonstration as well for a different instrument lol) I'd honestly stand in the middle of my room, away from any kind of bonk-able surface that could dent my guitar and I'd be scared to even scratch the pickguard by accident, even tho...it's there to catch scratches that would otherwhise scratch the actual finish of the guitar

For my 10th birthday I got a turquoise violin from my dad. Later I looked on amazon history and discovered it was around 70 dollars, the same violin they got but a different color. I no longer blamed myself for snapping 3 strings and all the pegs coming out and all the hair on my bow unloosening. I learned that it wasn't my beginner's playing when I practiced on my schools violin and to my surprise, nothing broke. Moral of the story: Violins are expensive for a reason.
@chandrawong449 Жыл бұрын
Buying from a reputable dealer (ie. a real music store or strings shop) is important. When my son started playing, I got him an $80 1/2 size violin (case/bow/rosin included). Granted, this was 12 years ago, but we bought it from the music shop in our small town. They measured my son to order the correct size because the 'orchestra' teacher wanted my son to get a full sized violin so it would be louder. There are many stories about that 'orchestra' and that teacher, but that was an awesome first violin. 12 years later and my son in minoring in music/violin performance, has a composite bow (he picked out) that plays the equivalent to a $1000 wood bow and was gifted a nice violin from a friend who used to be an excellent player through her 20s but sold her $5000 violin because she needed the money. She bought a 'cheap' $400 violin 30 years ago because she felt bad not owning a violin but couldn't play it because the sound quality was so much worse. That 'cheap' violin got him to all-state orchestra in high school and a performing arts scholarship in college.

When i finally decided to play, it was out of tune. I watched a vid on youtube to get the right note and the fricking bridge flew right across the room! I cried 3 night straight! Thinking I had broken a violin who was passed on for 6 generations! Saved over a 1000$ to get it repaired and the artisan(yes he builds violin as a passion & knows everything about wood based instruments) He laughed so hard at me and explained that it was not glued on the violin lolll He fixed it without charging me and showed me how to tune it🤦 I took that money and bought myself a cheap violin to start practicing! Im never touching that violin again until i 100% know how to play😂

Anjali a violin that cheap might have problems that will affect your playing, or anyone’s for that matter simply because they might not be built right. The best thing you can do would be to go to the nearest music store and see the cheapest violins that they have and confirm that they’re not total garbage, but that might not be possible right now for obvious reasons. the fact that it costs $50,000 for a "professional" violin is just so sad ... so many talented people would never be able to afford one. I think this is also part of the reason why the classical music scene is filled with mostly upper class people. I'm not criticizing people for having money, but damn, I know it does not cost even close to $50,000 to produce a violin lol. Just seems over the top in terms of pricing. I'm a professional guitarist and the cost of each of my guitars varies from $800 - $2500. $2500 would be considered a "professional build", but in actually the additional cost is mostly for the prestige (e.g. the headstock logo showing up as "Gibson Les Paul" vs a "Gibson Les Paul Studio").
@grey76854 жыл бұрын
Violin making is incredibly difficult, and there are loads of factors that come into pricing. It also takes years to make them, I see it as a pretty equal price match, but it still really sucks that thry arent widely available for cheap. Ik there are some carbon violins out there though, there are a lot of luthiers trying to figure out how to produce a carbon violin with an authentic sound so people can afford one that's cheap and durable!
@joestevenson55684 жыл бұрын
Right? A professional guitarist could EASILY make a professional sound on a £300 squire or epiphone.
@BluePeach02144 жыл бұрын
I'm a guitarist as well, but guitar and violin are built different. Reason even the technique in making violin took years to learn and even a good luthier wouldn't even be able to make violin as close to what it was in the past, such as Stradivarius, etc. For a classical guitar a basic mass produced Yamaha would work well and sounds good, I started with a $80 Yamaha Guitar as a starter, which for a violin the same price probably would not be as satisfactory. Each piece in the violin, are supposed to be handmade and really made to detail. A mass produced violin won't sound the same, reason why their price is soooo high.

As a luthier, I have had the dubious privilege of setting up a lot of these monstrosities. Eddy and Brett did a great job calling out a lot of the obvious problems with them. Plastic necks, unfitted bridges, the grooves in the nuts are always wrong. A lot of times it is possible to set them up to be barely playable, but considering how terrible they sound it’s really not worth it.
@hzuiel5 жыл бұрын
I'm not a professional luthier, but I got into it as a hobby, and what i've seen is that the below $100 range aren't really worth upgrading, but above that price can easily be made playable and the real thing is that the good ones are almost shockingly sturdy. Kids drops them and they fall pegbox down, and don't shatter. The wood is thicker, which makes them heavier duty, but of course that thickness of material hurts performance and playability(too think of neck, heavy makes it harder to practice for longer, doesn't resonate as well and sounds stifled). I have had a couple of these cheap amazon student instruments that actually shocked me. They are usually just set up really poorly. One they dropped and popped some glue seams loose, sound post fell out, bridge broke. After gluing the seams back together, the sound post was pretty crappy so I cut and fit a new one. The bridge was total loss so I shaped a cheap teller bridge, probably $10 in materials and after i finished i was actually shocked how good that violin sounded. I also adjusted one where the bridge was unplayable out of the box, practically square, too high, and not carved down at all(pretty much a blank, i mean 30 seconds of effort was made to fit that bridge. I fitted the feet properly, thinned it, shaped the top properly and it was pretty good after that.

@@myes344 I guess it depends on what you consider "playable" to mean. Yes, you can make sounds with a violin like this. Hopefully you'll keep playing. I have no idea of the resell value of most instruments, but I can imagine you won't get 2,000 back.

jmitterii2 that’s actually not necessarily true. If you buy an a hundred year old violin with good tone and great craftsmanship for 2000 dollars, in 40 years that violin could cost more as the age of it increases. As long as it is still in amazing condition, age of a violin really adds to the price as new violins are often looked down upon

The lesson can be applied to all aspects of life: if it’s cheap, there’s a reason why.

Common question I get from parents who want to start their kid in violin: would this $60 violin off of Amazon be good? Answer: as twoset has just demonstrated, don't buy online especially from third party websites like Amazon. It's so much easier to go into a store to see exactly what you're getting, talking to an expert on what to look for, getting it properly sized, and looking into a good rental plan.

I got my violin off of amazon and it is perfectly fine. I guess it has to do with the brands, sometimes not the website itself.

Maddog if there’s no music store there probably also isn’t a good teacher
@hertz8165 жыл бұрын
@Maddog i live in a city of 73k people and there's a decent music store around 45 minutes away from me. I'm pretty sure the only way for people to not have a music store of any kind near them would have to be if they both lived in the middle of literally nowhere and aren't willing to put in the effort to drive an hour to better themselves, at which point it's really their own fault if they suck tbh

@@hertz816 Some people live in places with dogshit public transport and lacking the ability to drive - y'know, a good chunk of minors, for example. Then again, if I was in that spot I'd do some research and buy something that'll last me a few years as a beginner (say, for example, something around 250-300$) yet doesn't need sound amazing and make sure to use reputable retailers/websites and brands only.

Maddog I mean that if it’s remote enough that the nearest music store is far away, then, statistically speaking, it’s probably remote enough that there are very few music teachers there to begin with.

Just wanted to put it out there that these violins are a bit too cheap for playing. But, if youre just starting the violin and you can afford this, the $200 violin from walmart actually is really good. I now play a $7,000 violin body with a $5,000 bow. There is a huge difference but for starting, I definitely recommend the walmart one.

Pawn shops are good, too. They usually don't know anything about violins and you can get something much nicer than the $200 for much less. Though I'd recommend a beginner bring an experienced player who knows what to look for in a quality instrument

When I decided to start learning how to play the guitar, I bought a cheap $50-$100 'Lotus' guitar. It would've been just fine for a beginner to learn. But, as soon as I started learning the basic fundamentals, I ran out and bought a $3000 Gibson Les Paul. It didn't improve my playing any. I should've kept practicing on the cheap one until I got good, then buy a better guitar and I would've appreciated the higher quality a lot more.

Never felt so stressed watching a twoset video: **using their bows on cheap crappy instruments** **over 100 dollars worth of crap** **some are out of footage** **twoset thinking over their decisions in making this video** But still, this is why i enjoy watching you guys. 😂❤️

I bought a $90.00 violin on Amazon because it was all I could afford and wasn't sure if I'd like violin (I'm 57 and flit from hobby to hobby quite a bit). So far it's a great instrument for me, I learned how to tune it, even changed a string to make sure I knew how to do it just in case. It came with a decent bow and rosin, a neck rest and extra strings. I'm getting some wonderful sounds out of it and think it was a great deal and will last me years. 🎻
