We know that it’s bad form to return to the same word over and over again here on Journey to the Microcosmos. But whenever we write about amoeba, we will probably say the word “blob” a lot.

While we don't know for sure why it's sometimes purple and sometimes not, I think dietary factors ARE worth consideration- Kind of like how a flamingo is pink because of what it eats, but on a smaller scale?

I was thinking it might be response to ultraviolet rays which tend to be harmful to microbes, since its found on rooftops. Since it reflects violet it may also reflect ultraviolet like an overlap. Just a thought.

The problem with that is the color purple is rare in nature. Probably as rare as blue. So I highly doubt it's a dietary thing.

I still don't understand how the organism chooses to move and stick an appendage out without bones, muscles, brain, eyes or nose. It just does.
@NabPunk
@NabPunk Ай бұрын
Well, it does have underlying structural elements, they just don't have any obvious symmetry, and just move towards or away from things that they 'smell'. In essence, our view of life is biased towards animals and plants, we don't understand how cellular life could work day to day, but then our own systems harbor trillions of cells most of whom have the same organelles and structures as the amoeba (we are all eukaryotes).

I love how evolutionists like to claim that single cell organisms are "simple" and that they are "obviously" the first of all the life on the planet, but single cell organisms are usually anything but simple. These things have digestive systems, light sensing parts, they hunt for food, and can communicate and work together in some cases etc. Not exactly so simple when you look closely, i mean, i know gen Zers that are less developed.

This may be a stretch, but if they're found on walls and near gutters, is it possible that they can become airborne when cysts and spread that way? Maybe the outer blob dries up and acts as a sail. Mossy roofs may be a good place to find them.

Can yall do an episode on oxalate crystals in houseplants (ex. Aglaonema commutatum) ? I have samples of a leaf which has necrotic spots and my professor said no saprophytic fungi or bacteria was found, but that the raphide crystals were stabbing the leaf tissue making wounds, causing the spots. Could you explain how those crystals ended up on the surface of the leaf epidermis if they’re made within the specialized idioblast cells?

One thing i don't get about microscopic organisms is how come they don't speciate more? like how is it possible you find this ameba in europe and in james backyard(don't know where james lives) is it even the same species genetically, i get that they can be carried by wind, birds, people, etc but i doubt this chance addition to the genepool would happen often enough to maintain a distinct species. Microorganism species must have extremely diverse genes for a species or maybe they evolve really slowly, or convergently evolve though that wouldn't explain the genes idk... could it be that rarely they are the same species and we are really talking about a genus or something? What i'm saying is you grab an animal like a lizard and put in on a deserted island for a long time it's gonna be a divergent species but so are most of the microorganisms that originally inhabited the island right? but they are small so it would hardly need to be a deserted island, could something as simple as just being in another state or a few miles away... is it as simple as the wind being more than enough to seed need organisms around the globe and stop speciation?
