Really great you are in ottawa now. The Algonquin (Annishnaabe) name of the river is the Kitchi Zibi which translates as Great River. The big island is Kettle Island. A bit further down the river are Upper Duck and Lower Duck Islands. Along with Petrie Island in Orleans these areas provide lits of habitat. And Pileated Woodpeckers along with the tiny Downie and medium sized Hairy Woodpeckers all stay around in winter. We will also have the odd Red Breasted Woodpecker and three towed Woodpecker in winter. Red headed Woodpecker and northern Flickers head south to escape the cold winters....so odd seeing 'home' in your video. Can't wait for the coming years and your discovery of these beautiful lands and waters.

@RichardBirchett so even though I grew up in Gatineau I never went over to kettle Island. The only way to access it is by water. There is a boat launch over at parc sanscartier but if you are crossing with a canoe or kayak it would likely be just as easy to cross from the Ottawa side. Upper and lower duck island are also only water accessible, using the Blair road boat launch. And while a very cold winter could create thick enough ice to walk across, I wouldn't recommend it. There is a strong current in the river that w8ll likely keep the ice too thin in places for a safe crossing. And personally after going through ice in Labrador a few years ago while working, I stay off all river ice.

Hi Richard, welcome to Ottawa. Lots of great opportunities for wildlife shots as you'll come to experience. If you head to Dunrobin area (west end) there are three Osprey nests that are very accessible - right by the side of the road. Also the Carp River conservation area - cormorants and herons. Welcome/Bienvenue to Ottawa. Although still a big city, the wildlife definitely does frequent in and around it, especially where you're located. Lots of places to explore and you will happen upon our many mammal/bird species with ease. Overall, hope you enjoy the city and all that eastern Ontario has to offer. I've had many great experiences there, though never fully lived in it.

Hi Richard - noted your comment about mossies and bugs. Next time you are back, grab some Bovril... a small spoon before you venture iout will stop the mossies and gnats, midges etc... as they don't like it in the skin as you sweat. I'm back up to Mullion this month... looking forward to couple of early mornings up there - so really appreciate your sharing of location.... I now love it there... even though still 350 miles from home. We move to Cornwall next year... can't wait!

Nice intro to the area, at least to the east along the river. I second the earlier comment about Mud Lake ... a very "target rich" place to visit. A couple of other spots to check out some time are Mer Bleu about 15 minutes from you, and the Larose Forest, a little ways out 417 towards Casselman. Mer Bleu is a great spot and a very unique environment. Both have moose if you get lucky, although I'd steer clear of the Larose Forest during moose hunting season.

@@RichardBirchett Mud Lake is really diverse with good trails to explore and lots of view points so you can get good views no matter what the time of day. There are a lot of people there and the birds and animals are quite habituated to people, especially some of the ducks. That's not good for the birds, but it makes for some amazing portrait style head shots of some of the ducks! Osprey, hawks, and various heron species are all regulars there and of course lots of smaller birds too.

Don't forget the mink. Stake out a few muskrat dens and you might catch an interesting mink on musk interaction. Check the paraglider launch and the falls in Luskville for Peregrines...they fly with us regularly...well, maybe fly at us would be more accurate.

Ah nice tips, I'll make sure I remember that! I've seen a few Mink but yet to properly get an image of one, not seen in a good light in the UK to the damage they cause and not being a native specie but what a successful predator they are! The high grass indentations at the beginning is more where the deer sleep! I see them plunked down often in the high grass! And you should see more wildlife around the Ottawa region than you did Toronto!

Hey Wayne, yeah I've seen that plenty of times at home but it striked me that there were so many along the track and after studying and reading about Coyotes hunting strategies it could be that also. But like you say they were large and very probable , would like to put a camera nearby but it's on a public path so I'd loath to do that for privicy issues and getting it pinched. 5:25 Pileated Woodpeckers are seen in the Ottawa Valley year-round. They typically measure 45 cm which makes them slightly smaller than the American Crow. BTW most path, recreational areas, parks in Ottawa-Gatineau require dogs to be on a leash (municipal by-laws and NCC requirements)

Regards the dogs yeah I’m aware that they need to be on leash around most areas, thankfully the areas I walk them and in the video are off leash, apart from the dogs drinking by my side along a river in the early morning. Pileated Woodpeckers are a nice splash of colour during our very, very long winters when most birds do fly south. The dogs on leash policy is mostly to protect the wildlife from careless pet owners who think that’s it’s ok for their dogs to chase after wildlife. Another case where the majority pays for the carelessness of a few… 🤷🏼‍♂️

Thanks for the video, just spent two weeks in Banff, jasper and bc, really struggled to find birds on the trip for some reason. Presumably the mid thirties temperatures didn’t help but it was weird.

Hi there Alex, Blimey can't believe you didn't see a great deal of birds as that's such a amazing place to be. It could be something to do with the tail end of the breeding season, certainly birds at home in the UK tend to hide away after the stresses of a busy season and they always looked quite ragged and out of condition! Welcome to the area. Check out Mud Lake and Fletcher's Garden to begin with. Also, please be aware (if you're not already) about ticks. Mark's Workwearhouse has 'no fly zone' anti tick clothes. Don't go into the woods without being properly protected. Eastern Canada is endemic for deer ticks carrying Lyme disease (and unfortunately other diseases).

You'll be happy to know that the Pileated woodpecker isn't seasonal for us! They'll stay in the Ottawa/Quebec forests all year! Glad to see you're so close to the main river! We have so many bodies of water here... I keep kicking myself for not buying a polarising filter yet! I need a 95mm for my Sony lens, so I'll have to order it at some point this year... Rockcliffe is beautiful! Heck, you could basically just bike to Québec! Wakefield is also a beautiful family day trip in that area... Small village on a lake with an artsy bohemian vibe in the summer, surrounded by perfect forest The SAQ next to Casino du Lac-Leamy is your best wine source nearby 😂 That's about all I can think to share... all the museums near you are nice too.... at that air museum, you can book a scouting of Ottawa/Quebec from the air for the overview of the land

Hey Jon, Thats great to hear as I'd love to spend some time photographing them in the autumn and Winter, much easier to see! I've got a few Polarisers for my primes and screw threads for my other lenses so might come in handy! Yeah, Quebec is so close, one of my nearest Cinemas is in Quebec its that close, lol..
