Hey, I got a couple questions if its okay. 1: how easy is it to get enough glory to be useful? I'm considering getting the miracles grinding dlc, but I wanna know how well you can go without it before I waste money. 2:how does the main character learn his special unique skills?

@@jonathangoodwin5609 Hi, John the reviewer here. (1) You can get glory from finding specially marked items in the environment and also from finding all the hidden Miman in the environment. So far, I've obtained enough glory through rigorous exploration that I'm comfortable with how many Miracles I've unlocked. I think it's pretty balanced and haven't thought to myself, "Dang, I wish I could speed this up," yet. In fact, exploring to find glory is a big part of the fun. (2) The main character learns skills through demon "Essence." Essence is basically a list of skills that a specific demon would normally learn, except Essence is treated as its own special sort of item that you can only have 1 of each type of at a time. When you use the Essence, you can take skills from that list and apply them to the main character *or* to your other demons. (So for example, with a Jack Frost Essence, you can teach your character or another demon Bufula, among other things.) You find Essence in treasure chests (sometimes including special, unique ones), at a store at save points, or sometimes your demons will give you their Essence. Essence goes even further than that, but I can't remember if that part's embargoed or not haha.

@ChromeColossus thanks for the response! When I asked about skills, I was referring to the skills unique to him, as in the ones not from other demons. For example, from the trailers seen, those skills like Aramasa or Wrath Tempest are clearly only belonging to the MC and not from a demon, so I had assumed those skills came from somewhere other than essences.

I honestly wish pokemon fans would give SMT a chance. They've put up with so much abuse from game freak especially with the latest on diamond and pearl forcing XP share on the entire party. SMT is literally everything pokemon fans wish pokemon could be. The only reason anyone still plays pokemon today is nostalgia.

Eh, I don't think SMT is as similar to Pokemon as some try and claim. The monster collection aspect is the only thing I'd really say both games share. How you obtain them, the battle system, and the overall feel and tone are completely different. I feel like its a bit of a mistake to push the Pokemon angle too hard.

I find SMT better when thinking of it as an anti-pokemon game. Can't get attached to any one demon, you have to kill your darlings so you can get stronger, you're not collecting demons so much as using them as a tool to build a party that can deal with whatever you're facing, and you're doing it pretty much every time you hit a wall, which is a lot if you're a new player. I don't think it scratches the same itch Pokemon does and I love it for it, but Pokemon fans might hate it.

I'm hoping that section about the bosses is for the majority of them. In SMT IV it felt like only the two first bosses were designed to teach you specific things.

SMT IV had a weird thing going where it started off harsh only to mellow way out the more options available to you. I didn't mind it a ton but would like a little more refinement, not every boss fight needs to be a cake walk or absolutely demolishing.

Crazy how both Persona 5 and Shin Megami Tensei V are the games in their respective franchises to pull loads of fans in. Persona 5 actually got me into SMT as a whole back when I was like "oh that's a cool anime looking game for $20" back in February 2020, and since then I've bought and beat Persona 5 Royal, Persona 3 FES, Persona 4 Golden, and Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remaster. I've played SMT IV on emulator. but I plan to buy a actual 3ds to play that and actually complete it, as well as Strange Journey Redux, IV Apocalypse, Devil Survivor Overclocked, etc. I have also dabbled with SMT Digital Devil Saga, but I have yet to actually complete it tbh, and with SMT V coming out it might be a while before I get back into DDS haha, but I definitely will. Overall, I love this franchise and I love seeing more and more people getting into it. I didn't even know what SMT was back when I played and beat Persona 5, and now I'm starting to get deeper and deeper into it, and I think I can safely say that SMT as a whole are my favorite jrpg games. Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

Its only my speculation. Propably becouse both P5 and SMT V was first games in HD released on pretty popular in West platforms (P5 - PS3/4, SMT V - Switch). Except ofcourse SMT III HD Remaster.

My dude, you have no reason to have doubts about the gameplay, Atlus know how to make a fun rpg (Better than any other turn based battle rpg) the story is always good in SMT, is different from the other RPGs (No hero fantasy.)

The game will have to beat Final Fantasy 13-2 to be the greatest J-rpg ever made. From what I see here, I expect this game will be worth around 300 hours of playtime which beats Strange Journey Redux slightly, though looses to Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker. It definitely does not compete with FF13-2.

@@lanceknightmare About that... The only moment Final Fantasy was better than Shin Megami Tensei is the SNES era, with FF6, after that... Yeah... FF7, 8, 9 < Devil Summonrer, Soul Hackers, Megami Ibunroku Persona, FF10, and 12 < Persona 4, Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga... And then the new games, Strange Journey, Devil Survivor 1 and 2, SMT 4 and 4 Apocalypse... After Ps2 era FF don't even compete... And 5 is coming, and is gonna be better than 15, and 7 remake. (Not counting the MMO ones, FF14 is pretty cool)

I want a good story (SMT games stories used to be minimalist but interesting, intriguing and often with good plot twists) but the game to feel isolating too. Since that's one of the things I look for in games like these. In IV you have partners but they aren't always with you, and most of the time you don't know what will happen with them one second to another. In IV Apocalypse well... I got used to it but yeah it feels a lot less lonely. So I'd like them to balance this two aspects the best way they could.

I wouldn't expect minimalism like Nocturne at all. From what they have shown in trailers and what I've seen in previews so far, I'd say it's a mix of Nocturne in terms of vibes, tone, and expands the idea of characters and storytelling 4 or SJ had. Which IMO is the right direction. Nocturne's character development is not the strength of the game.

With DLC, you can make a Pixie uber by optimize her stats, skills, "miracles" (whatever this is) and resistances.

@@razedragos Yeah I understand, I live in a economic crysis. Maybe a re-run after some time? Then you will have more money to spend on DLC. If you are interested, in 2019/2020 I was saving money to buy Switch + 3 games + Pro Controller in one fell swoop (about R$2000). In 2020 came the Sars-Covid-2 and the price increase, when I entered the sites that sold the Switch for R$4300, I gave up and bought an 8 GB video card for my PC and a better processor, as well as a power supply. I still need to increase RAM memory to 32 GB and add an SSD. I wanted to buy a Switch because SMT V.

Does anyone know what Abscesses are? And what the moon face does in this game?

Seems like abscesses are gauntlet style battles where you have to kill several waves of enemies in order to unlock the next section of the map. Not sure about the moon phase aside from how it was in 3, where it affected some passive skills, special chests, allowed you to talk to certain demon types, and unlocked certain fusion combinations.

Hi, John the reviewer here. Abscesses are giant red weird circle shapes on the world map that obfuscate the surrounding area on your map, making it harder to see where things are. When you get physically close to an Abscess, it spawns a bunch of monsters to attack you as a defense mechanism, but you can run right past them to attack the Abscess directly. That triggers a mini boss fight against stronger versions (mostly just more HP) of demons that you might not have seen to that point in the game. When you beat the the mini boss, the Abscess is destroyed, you can see your map clearly, and you unlock new Miracles (special bonuses and enhancements, basically) for Nahobino to purchase. (*Oh, and typically, Abscesses are optional. You seldom *have* to destroy them to continue progressing.) As for moon phases, honestly, in 90 hours I've seen very little importance in the mechanism. Sometimes it affects demon negotiations; demons can be more aggressive at full moon I guess. I recall a sidequest that required a certain phase to initiate. It really feels like a trivial feature in this game, unless there's somehow something I missed in the past multiple dozens of hours.

You can run past anything an Abscess spawns and just attack the Abscess directly, which is a mini boss fight against standard demons but with more HP etc. Destroying Abscesses clears up your map, but it is seldom actually required to destroy them to continue progressing. Mostly, you want to destroy them to unlock new Miracles for purchase.

Hi, John the reviewer here. Honestly, my brain just doesn't pick up on resolution and frame rate especially often, but I had a pretty comfortable time playing it handheld on a standard Switch. It looked fine to me. The one exception was a dungeon (dungeons are actually extremely rare occurrences in this game, fyi) that looked really dark playing handheld, which made it harder to gauge jumps because it involved a lot of puzzle platforming. Otherwise, no complaints for me.

Normal should suffice for most mainline MegaTen titles. Never play Hard for your 1st MegaTen title. Would suggest Hard only for New Game plus.

If the presentation was what you disliked about the 3DS ones then you probably would like this one. If that's not the case then uh, no idea lol. The 3DS games were mechanically much improved over the PS2 games except for the fact that the combat and cutscenes weren't in 3d.

There are also Miracles to purchase that can increase Nahobino's effectiveness with specific types of attacks, like Physical, Fire, Almighty, Recovery, etc., but you have to be strategic about which ones you spend glory to buy.

@@ChromeColossus thank god, the worst part of 4 imo was how it basicly railroaded you into a jack of all trades build by making you use all 8 active skills. I much prefer using 2-3 attack skills, then putting passives in the rest of the slots to get maximum damage

@@Alistair_7609 there was the Fiend Accessories which had passives built in. Issue was 1/256 encounter rate for them in vanilla 4 for Flynn and you needed DLC to reset Twisted Tokyo so Nanashi could get them on one cycle.

The story will be barebones and the characters will be cardboard cutouts of "Lawful Dude" and "Chaotic Dude", SMT isnt focusing on the story too much. But I still love the setting of the games which makes what little story there is much more hype.

I don't think story will be that bare. No SMT is that bare. Even the most minimalist ones. Just expect you will not have too much characters interactions early in the game (Although trailers have shown a lot) but you'll meet more and more human and not human characters through your journey that will give you their perspective of the world that will make YOU to develop. That's the point in SMT games. And also expect some good plot twists here and there. How do I know that? Because SMT games are always like all of this. So don't be disappointed beforehand. I'm sure the game will be excellent. And plot will be there at least to make you interested to go on.

I think what they meant was thay that it doesn't just throw cutscenes at you SMT III focuses more on gameplay but there absolutely is an interesting story, it's just not dialogue heavy. I think you'll enjoy it :)

They always talk about 3,4 regarding Atlus , i mean SMT II , I think has the biggest scope, atmosphere and richest lore of all Megaten games. Just because they didnt get a wéstern release doesnt mean they don't exist, like how people forget Dragon Quest exists while talking about SNES/ SUPERFAMICOM, like they wonder why Japan doesnt love FFVI that much as them, Japan's" FFVI "is Dragon Quest V, DQV is so huge and beloved.

@Enno to you I guess. FFVII is up there with Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG and Earthbound Mother 2 to me. SMT3 just wasn’t fun to me at all. But I didn’t care for Persona 5 either though. So restrictive in its gameplay. I started P5 Strikers and it was better.

I'm a really big fan of SMT 4, loved its world building and atmosphere. I enjoyed Nocturne and I think its atmosphere and story are amazing, but I absolutely detested the level design and the long boring stretches of literally nothing in between every story segment. Repetitive blocky level design and Demi-Fiend's footsteps can only be entertaining for so long. Honestly I think Nocturne is one of the most overrated RPGs I've ever played in my life, right next to Dragon Quest 8. I'm a little concerned that SMT V is going back to a more Nocturne-esque method of storytelling, but I'm happy to hear that there is no irritating level design and that it has actual exploration. I'm optimistic.

Yeah it’s a little hard to put it into words but the story just doesn’t feel cohesive in nocturne. There’s so few characters, and you spend so little time with them, it feels weird and stilted. The world itself is incredibly interesting but they could have done more with it

I'm just hoping SMT V does for the SMT series what P5 did for the Persona series. I don't expect the same sales, only that it breaks into the JRPG mainstream a bit more, sells better than all the other entries, and attracts a new love for the franchise. It likely won't have the cool non-combat aspects & side stuff Persona offers that make it fun when taking a break from battling demons & grinding, but an emphasis on side characters, relationships, and playing the way you want to enjoy the game would go a long way in expanding the audience & shining a spotlight on the series. Third party exclusives designed for the Switch from the ground up deserve a ton of praise & respect imo. And this game has been in development longer than most Pokemon games get (and without even a fraction of the money & resources at their disposal), so I hope their efforts are rewarded 100x over.

Thanks for the honest run down of it, I had played 4 and it was so ridiculous that I couldn’t even finish the tutorial even though it seemed interesting and by hearing so much that it’s challenging it’s put me off to it, so I at least know I can skip this and get dragon quest instead

Honestly the beginning of 4 is way, way harder than the rest of the game by a good margin. You also unlock an easier difficulty if you game over enough times. 4 Apocalypse, the direct sequel to 4, had a way better difficulty curve and was much more approachable gameplay-wise. These games have in general been getting better about offering more difficulty options and easing in new players and 5 seems like it is going to be the best one so far in that case since it's got the most difficulty options. Anyways my point is that you probably won't have to worry about difficulty if you think this looks interesting. That said... DQ 11 is also pretty amazing so either way you're in for a good time lol.

Nope. The player character learns skills from essences you get from demons that give you skills and can change your element affinities. I believe you can also get some unique skills from buying them with Glory you get by exploring.
