Movies like this and The Fly are solid evidence that practical effects are better than CGI

As are movies like "An American Werewolf In London", the 1978 version of "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers", "Alien"....or sci fi movies like "2001" and "Close Encounters". When special effects are done in the camera, they look the most real. (but the human effort is immense! And costly! And time consuming!)
@charlestonw801st3 жыл бұрын
@@TTM9691 definitely man the worst part about the Thing prequel is that they had this advanced effects company come in do weeks and weeks worth of practical effects putting people in suits and make up and then the dumbasses for the studio just went in and glazed over EVERYTHING with shitty ass terrible looking CGI it ruined the movie it could’ve been decent if they didn’t do that.
@FilthTribeFTP3 жыл бұрын
Simply not true. While practical effects are usually preferred over CGI, they can definitely easily look horrendously worse than CGI. Think of some of the 80s B movies you've seen with just RIDICULOUS practical effects. It makes the movie downright comical. Same goes for CGI.... It can be done incredibly amazing or it can look like Mortal Kombat Annihilation, lol. You also have to take into consideration, that certain effects or placements may look better with one or the other. Usually moving or living beings, especially if it's a talking face, will work better with practical, if done right, to avoid the uncanny valley. But CGI is predominantly better for large landscapes or backgrounds, stuff like that. The best results is when they are both combine to compliment each other. So yeah, I will always prefer practical over CGI on most cases, but only if it's done right. You have to understand that the CGI in The Thing 2011, was horribly rushed due to time constraints, and was painted over the practical effects already shot, so you're just asking for a bad time. Had they spent more money and had more time, the CGI could've looked way better, although, I think with The Thing, it's more about principle than anything, when it comes to using practical effects.

The dog was played by an animal actor named Jed! Jed was a wolf dog; he apparently creeped out the cast and crew because he was just as still, staring, and undoglike off camera. I believe Jed won some awards for his performance in other movies he was a very good boy

Yeah, that one scene where Jed was walking slowly down the hall and stopped to look in every open door before moving forward, from what I’ve read he did that without explicit instructions or coaching.

Greatest horror film ever made and one of the greatest in general. Not just because of the great cast, ambience, plot etc but because of the concept. Can you imagine anything more frightening? You're on a desolate continent, you're battling an extremely intelligent creature, that is almost indestructible besides against fire/acid, can imitate all life forms and you won't know the difference without a specific test, you have no idea if it's malicious or simply trying to survive, you're dead if it touches you and if it gets to transportation, water or civilization the whole planet is doomed, not only humans. Only thing worse I can think of is utter atomic annihilation.

Coolest thing about this movie is that they had a stunt double that’s a double amputee do the scene when the Thing eats his arms! They put prosthetics on his face to make him look like the doctor.

It’s crazy that the thing is so smart that when Palmer (already infected at this point) looks back and draws attention to the crawling thing that he’s doing it to make himself look less suspicious …until they did the blood test.

The same reason Blair destroyed radio comms and the chopper as an excuse to kill the dogs because they were the real threat to The Thing, being able to spot it easily. This happens in the book too, his freakout being a distraction. Blair was one of the very first, maybe the first of the Americans to be infected. The autopsy scene shows his face juxtaposed with the dog at the final cut, indicating that he got infected while doing the autopsy.

And as a bonus he can call the other thing a moron without getting noticed :D
@greengarnish17112 жыл бұрын
@@TheDog-i6x Blair was definitely infected once he got isolated from the group via food contamination since he only had that pair of clothing and the Thing knew that so he couldn't assimilate him like the others, he must've realised it and tried to end his life as evident with the noose but it was too late. This is my head canon and seems to be the more logical theory.

Just putting this out there for people who aren't yet aware: As reported by /Film, cinematographer Dean Cundey has finally seen fit to reveal one facet of the infamous movie monster's nature that he and Carpenter have kept under wraps about The Thing for thirty-four years. As featured in the exclusive commentary included on the forthcoming 2K Blu-ray rerelease from Scream Factory (due out October 11, 2016), Carpenter always wanted a visual cue to be in place to hint at which crew members were still human at any point over the course of the production's runtime. Speaking to how they want about achieving this, Cundey states on the 2K Blu-ray commentary: "You’ll notice there’s always an eye light, we call it, a little gleam in the eye of the actor. It gives life." Making Childs the thing, something a lot of people have been speculating on but for wrong reasons.

The Thing and David Cronenberg's The Fly are the best horror films all time, I'd put the fly just a notch above the thing because I'm a sucker for tragic love stories and I think it's cool on a emotional and special effects level seeing a character undergo a horrific transformation, but The Thing is still a fucking masterpiece as scary as they come that film!
