Yeah, 'cause him yelling anything understandable while his abdomen is cut open and his intestines spilled out would definitely have been heroic. The death of a traitor against the king (hanged, drawn, and quartered) is very not-movie-friendly. They pantomime what will happen in the film.

How the rebellion started is one of the truer events in the movie. The sheriff of Lanark had eyes for Wallace's woman (Marion, not Murrin) before they were married. Wallace married Marion and after a bit, he got into a skirmish with some of the sheriff's men. Marion helped him escape into the hills. To get his revenge and with lust full hate the sheriff had her killed. Wallace returned under the cover of darkness, went to the sheriff's house and with one blow of his huge claymore sword near cut him in half. After, Wallace went on a rampage killing anything English and a rebellion was born. Wallace was a bloody warrior who did horrific things as bad and in cases worst than what the English did to the Scotts. In the end some nobles sold him out, but there's no record of Wallace ever meeting the Bruce, though they new of each other.

This isn't correct. The rebellion kicked off because of the Scottish clans were forced to pay taxes to the English crown and were sick of the subjugation. Wallace may or may not have been married, but the actual death of the sherriff was far more violent. During the battle of Sterling Bridge, Wallace and his army routed the English, but the sheriff had been captured alive. Wallace had him flayed alive and wore his skin on his sword's sheath. Wallace's supposed sword in Edinburgh still has the sheriff's flayed skin on the handle. Whoever told you that story is taming it.
@Ruimas28
@Ruimas28 Жыл бұрын
The story of Marion was added much later through a romance. It was never told by anyone close in time to the events. Most likely someone wanted to make it all more of a romance and its fine. Just understand its highly unlikely. The real William Wallace either had training as a mercenary or as a clergyman. Possibly both at some time in his life. He had no known love interest.

There was a King who had everything a man could strive for. His achievements were many and his failures were few. There were grandiose stories, documenting his many glories. But none as somber as the one I tell you now. His kingdom was vast, reaching from sea to sea. They called him a conqueror, a liberator and even a god to be. He charged into every battle, fearless and ruthless, never fleeing and always victorious. His wife of many years had given him three sons to carry on his name. The people would chant 'long live the king' and may his dynasty forever reign. This King did things no one thought possible, amassing great riches and fame across the nation. No army, no castle, no man stood a chance against him. Until he came across the simple river in the woodlands. This river did not care for his titles, his might or his status. And despite his best efforts, the river opposed him. The King had no reason to cross the river other than pride, but that was enough for him to become crazed in the eye. He braved the fiercest storms and survived the most vicious battles, but this river somehow stopped him. His servants could hear him cry out in the night. Angel, angel what have I done? I've faced the quakes, the wind, the fire. I've conquered country, crown and throne. Why can't I cross this river?. Whispers began to spread of the king, people joked that a mere body of water had bested their mighty ruler. He grew obsessed with that river, driven to cross it at any and all costs. He had his builders build a bridge, but the river took it down. He had his soldiers brave the current, but all were lost and drowned. He had his priests pray for God's assistance, but none was ever given. Each time, they were repelled by the river and with every attempt, the king grew more agitated. He had his learned friends research the history of the river, but they found nothing of note. It was a simple river, nothing more, they urged. The King's sons constantly squabbled over the throne that would one day be theirs and saw the river as an opportunity to win their father's favor. The eldest son was the bravest and he stepped boldly into the current, but his valor could not save his life from the raging water. The middle son was intelligent and built a contraption to get across, but it failed and he was washed away with his creation. The youngest was lazy and had the river filled with boulders, but they gave way as soon as he stepped upon them. The King's three sons perished in that water and it was too much for the queen to bear, so on the night of the final funeral, she threw herself into the river. The King's obsession with the river only worsened as he drained his kingdom of all its resources in an effort to find a way to the other side. His people started to turn against him as his sanity unraveled. Those most loyal assured they'd think no less of him if he were to give up this foolhardy pursuit. But he continued to refuse. A fortnight after his wife had thrown away her life, the kingdom was gathered on the bank as the King proclaimed he would cross it himself, ordering no one to come to his aide. He believed the river to be alive and that it was testing his resolve . And on the morning of that fateful day, he was ready to risk it all. But as he prepared for the dangerous trek, a peasant girl slipped and fell in. She gripped onto a rock as the river fought hard to pull her all the way in. She cried and she screamed, but the King remained still, uncaring for her young life. But then a boy in rags stepped forward, calling out for the girl who he named his sister. He tried jumping in, but was grabbed by a soldier and told he would perish, but the boy kept trying to get to her. 'If I am to die then I will die, but I will not stand idly by,' the boy boldly proclaimed. And so he dove in, that peasant boy with no name. The crowd watched in awe as he arose from the thunderous current, his feet gripping the muck that lie beneath the surface. With all his strength, he pulled himself across and snatched his sister from the slippery wet rocks. When they made it to the other side, the King shouted witchcraft and demanded that the boy must die. His archers looked around, but did not raise their bows. He shouted and shouted, but no one did as they were told. The King was alone, feeling betrayed. And in a fit of rage, he jumped into the river, following that peasant boy with no name. He thrashed around & grunted as he pushed his way across, but just as he reached the other side, he met the young boy's gaze. The boy reached out to give the King a hand, the King who had just demanded his life. The angry King scoffed and pushed him away, grabbing a nearby tree branch to haul himself onto the river bank. The branch, well it snapped and the river sucked him back in. The crowd let out a gasp, but not a single one jumped in. As the water pushed the King beneath its waves and he took his final breath, he dwelled on all that he had lost in the recent past. His crown, his people, his wealth and his lands. His kingdom, his family and his legacy with them. This river had taken his mind and on that fateful day, the river would claim his life. And as he sank below the raging current, he saw one final sight... That peasant boy with no name and his sister by his side. Now they tell stories about that river and the nameless boy who dared to cross it. They sing of a king who was once called great, but the river in the woodlands had stolen all he attained. To this day, only those of pure heart can cross the humbling river, all others will be swept away.

EDIT: I made this comment to be informative, and a few replies from others excellently CORRECTED ME! (See replies below.) You asked how accurate the movie is vs how much embellishment. Unfortunately there was a lot embellishing. Here's some interesting things about the history... William Wallace had already begun his rebellion well before the death of his wife Murron. The incident was not the beginning, it increased his determination. King Edward the Longshanks didn't die at the time of Wallace's execution but actually years later. Wallace could not possibly have had an affair with the French princess because she was only about a toddler's age at the time, they actually never met. The battle of Stirling was not won because of any clever idea with the spears. That epic battle took place on a bridge and Wallace defeated the English becuse he had them trapped on it. The modern Stirling Bridge is not the original, which was abandoned, replaced and forgotten for centuries. But, interestingly, in recent years archaeologists found the orginal supporting pillar stones underwater that held the original bridge, a short distance from the modern bridge. The Scottish kilts (men's skirts) actually were not in fashion in Wallaces time, not for another century or two. The bagpipes used in the movie were actually English bagpipes, not Scottish ones. True Scottish bagpipes have a deeper sound, but they decided they liked the sound of English pipes better for the movie. When Wallace was to be executed, it was reported that he was dragged alongthe ground behind the carriage for the whole distance. The prince (son of king Edward), was killed years later by being impaled upward through his pelvis, and legend has it that his screams were loud enough to have been heard all the way across the English Channel over in France (I'm honestly not sure I believe that one) Robert the Bruce's battle at the end of the movie did actually result in a period of Scotland's independence for about a century, that's why Robert the Bruce is actually the "Braveheart" because the story is about how Wallace inspired HIM. In the early 1990's the Chechniyan rebels against Russia watched this movie and it was motivational for them. (they probably didnt know about the historical inaccuracies.)

Here's some corrections; - Kilts weren't in fashion for around 300 or so years AFTER the time of Wallace and many of the soldiers wore armour like the English. Wallace himself was a trained knight who spoke french fluently. - The French princess wasn't even born during the events of the movie and wouldn't be for around 100 years or so. - Robert The Bruce was called Braveheart and upon his death, his heart was placed in a reliquary and brought with Scottish knights to the holy land during the Crusades. Scotland was pretty much independent since then until the later half of the 1500s, when scottish born James VI became king of England and united the counties of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, making the United Kingdom.

Shame Robert The Bruce never betrayed anyone and barely had any interaction with Wallace in reality. Robert was one ice-cold mf in reality, though. He executed 3 nobles who planned on betraying him by killing them in a church as THEY believed he'd never violate sacred ground. Also, during the battle of Bannockburn, he killed an English knight by splitting his head in two with an axe while mounted and with leprosy. He is qouted as saying "Waste of a good axe", as the blow was so hard, it shattered the axehead.

There's some inaccuracies, but the overall is accurate. The Scotts don't have full independence; but like Canada, they have self rule. The Irish achieved full independence, for most of Ireland anyway. Northern Ireland got left behind, because it was predominantly Protestant, but even they have home rule. Michael Collins is a more accurate depiction, that is, of the Irish revolution. Liam Neeson played Collins.

One correction I'll share: Although *William Wallace* what is highly revered, it was *Robert the Bruce* that was historically called *_"Braveheart."_* Needless to say, they did *Robert the Bruce* dirty in this film. What led to the Scottish victory was the fact that the English had to cross a bridge and could only do so in small groups of men and the Scotts slaughtered them on the other side. They used the spears over an open field to show how a small group of men overcame a large over-confident force of Calvary. Kilts didnt exist back then either and the Scottish troops were every bit as well armored as the English. They made them look like poor farmers in the movie to make them seem less likely to win and make them underdogs.

Its amazing how many bilions Scotland made because of Mel Gibson. I think that movie put this relatively small country on a map. Went to Edenburg and it was fantastic expiercence. Of course William Wallace is everywhere there in some kind of form :) Beautifull country which I will definitely visit again.

If you think that Braveheart put Scotland on the map I'd suggest you give up thinking because it's obviously a skill you don't possess.

@@jensen72 I understand what you are saying, but I also get what @_ThinAir_ was saying. As a Scot now living in Chile, I can assure you that when I say Scotland "Corazon Valiente" is pretty much always the first thing people think of. Second is Rod Stewart, and third is Lord Cochrane, a Scot who helped Chile in their fight for independence. But both of the others are a loooong way from braveheart...

This movie was actually made because when Mel Gibson was in the UK ( filming) and as he walked the streets of London he would read the blue plaques ( they tell you about historic events that happened there) and one was about William Wallace. He was fascinated by his story so he was able to get someone ( sorry can't remember their name) to write this amazing screenplay. Mel Gibson produced and directed the movie which I believe went on to win many awards. For a absolutely amazing movie also by Mel Gibson you should watch is The Passion of the Christ. It's a absolute masterpiece and was life changing for many who watched it. I would recommend watching it at least once in your life cause i doubt you could watch it again. It's a hard watch.

Its not historically accurate if you compare the information in the movie to the historical records. However, there was a William Wallace and he was a renowned warrior and he did fight for Scotland's freedom and he still inspires Scotsmen and women to this day. That's the essence of this movie and in this way it is accurate.

Glad you liked the movie. One scandal that never happened, because it would be remembered to this day, is the princess being pregnant with Wallace's kid. Sorry, but a couple of royalty would've gone through with birthing a child, even if just once. There's no Wallace blood in the English lineage But yeah, it was a great story, and I'm glad you both likes it. Keep on keeping on, you two!!! 😃

What is so wrong with having Wallace's blood in the royal line?? It's better than the serpent seed like the modern bloodline.

Commanding a army and seeing your heavy cavalry get destroyed almost immediately would not only scare the shit out of you, but it would be extremely demoralizing to the men expected to go fight next. That single strategy likely won that battle.

Proud to be Scottish and everytime I watch this I cry 😢 a lot of the fact are inaccurate, the battles and us winning our freedom is correct and that's why we are all so patriotic. But Wallace wasn't as nice as the film made h out to be, he done some pretty bad things. Every Scottish person loves this film and wants to fight anyone straight after it lol glad you both enjoyed it.

We know their was a man called William Wallace who led Scot’s to fight the English, a lot of the battles were different, the one in the movie shows a field when in reality it was on a bridge, no one knows the motivation for him to start a revolution as the movie shows a romantic reason but that’s unconfirmed, the dates were wrong and the way they showed Robert the Bruce the guy who betrays him but leads them in the end is wrong he wasn’t a traitor he actually did lead Scottish to independence at Bannockburn to win their independence and was originally nicknamed braveheart both men big national figures in Scotland, as a scot I know the bare minimum I’m sure someone can even correct me but still love the movie personally

All the people in the comments it aint accurate what war movie is? the moral of the story is the way Scottish were treated back then. It is called Scotland the brave because those men who did fight for freedom knew they couldn't win but still fought for their freedom. Scotland was outnumbered. Look up the real William Wallace very tall for that era.

The thing to understand about this is that Mel Gibson is making a complete mess of history. He's got stuff from 500 years before William Wallace mixed with stuff from 500 years after, just because it looks cool. Really passionate movie though.
