The choreographer for Julia's big ending dance was the one that used to work exclusively with Aaliyah - when you watch the Rock The Boat or Try Again videos, you can see the similarities in the moves. Like a lot of movies it’s cringy as an adult but had us in a chokehold as kids/teenagers (millennials). You also have to remember that this is one of the first “dance” type movies for the early 00s before that genre got really popular. This predates You Got Served, Step Up, Stomp The Yard, Honey, etc. They were having pretty surface level conversations about race relations and interracial relationships but they weren’t wrong. Nikki was just the wrong messenger because she did Derek wrong. Lol But Sara DID show up to a Black school in the hood and snag the future doctor and “catch” of the school having 0 in common with him and being like a 4 to Nikki’s 10 😂 So of course sistas are gonna look at that and be like… huh? PLUS the juxtaposition of Nikki and Sara. VERY different and one is painted as aggressive, angry, sexual, etc. They were giving us a “tale as old as time.” Those who get it, get it.

That scene with Chenille & Sarah was more about Chenille trying to get Sarah to see her privilege & acknowledge it. Sarah is an outsider, trying to ingratiate herself into all black spaces whether it's changing her clothes, dance style & interactions. It's more about how they feel about her cultural appropriation & IR dating as a whole. Chenille doesn't have an issue with Sarah per se but the perception of their relationship is an obstacle they have to face whether they like it or not. We can't really remove context & history when it comes to peoples' understandings about interracial relationships & that's what Chenille meant when she told Sarah to open up her pretty brown eyes. Sarah clearly never had to think about race before & saw the world with this colorblindness that Chenille, Derek, Nikki even Malachi can't afford to.

First of all, Chenille had no right to get mad at Sara for “inserting” herself in their culture since Chenille was literally the one who added Sara into their group, practically forced her to come to the club with them, and taught her how to dress and act a certain way. Second of all, Sara is definitely privileged, but Chenille had no right to say that Sara is “stealing” her brother (one of the good black men, as she put it). You can’t steal anyone. If you love someone, you love them. Doesn’t matter what race they are. Since Derrick reciprocated the feeling with Sara and got along with her, and since Nikki left him for another man, Chenille had no right to say that Sara stole him. Chenille doesn’t even like Nikki and defended her over her own friend. Y’all are so disrespectful when it comes to interracial relationships involving white women and men of other races, but I guarantee there would be no talk about “stealing”, fetishization, cultural appropriation, or wanting to have mixed babies if it was a white man. I know you didn’t mention all of these, but some people have and they’re so wrong.

This movie was honestly an interesting take on how systemic racism and the things we went through as black people seeped into our community so much. From the issues the black community had with him being with a white woman to her just being in a black neighborhood. It's some kind of generational trauma from the past. I really like watching these things because you can really think about what was going through our minds as a community then and then realize how it's affecting us now.
