Thanks for watching! The Pacific jack mackerel which Linda caught are in fact not true mackerel, they are in the jack family (jacks and trevally). Yeah as the environment of North Pacific changes we’ll be seeing more and more new species emerging. Yellowtails (amberjack) have been caught at times in recent years too.

Warm water species show up on the West Coast of Vancouver Island some summers when warm current hits close to the area. I was excited because it was the first time I encountered this particular species of mackerel. 🙂

Mackeral sorta remind me of a giant stickleback. Pretty cool.

I'm interested to hear what you thought after eating the mackerel. We caught them last year in the Strait of Juan De Fuca, and while most people let them go, we kept ours and ate them immediately. Very tasty fish, my only regret was not having stuff to make ceviche with it. That would have been really good
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 3 ай бұрын
Yep mackerel taste so good, just delicious and healthy protein that can be grilled, eaten raw, canned… Here in BC people aren’t really exposed to any species other than salmon so the opinions on what’s good seem pretty biased.

So cool Rod! I truly hope to one day meet you!! Your a true inspiration to the culture! My lady and I tried out beach fishing along our trip back to Vancouver from Campbell river and just loved it! No luck at the beach but was still fun! I would love to do a tofino trip and try for some coho until Capilano levels rise. Very fun to watch! I just purchased the new Shimano Miravel as well would be nice to try it there.
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 3 ай бұрын
That beach coho fishery can also be done in Campbell River or any location along the East Coast as well, the timing is just slightly different. That said, the setting in Tofino is pretty nice! You don't get the mix of rocky shoreline and sandy beaches on the East side. I have been using a Miravel 1000 for lakes lately too. Awesome! See you out there. :)

@@FishingwithRod appreciate such a quick reply back Rod thats awsome man! You think the 3000 series Miravel will be ok for ambleside/capilano? I wasn't sure I could use the Miravel for Tofino but I would sure love to try!
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 3 ай бұрын
Oh definitely, the 3000 is what you want for beach fishing I think, especially on the West Coast of Van Island. The weight difference between the 2500 and 3000 is pretty small, but 3000's spool capacity is just better for those long casts you need to do.

@@FishingwithRod Thanks Rod!! Im so happy to finally have upgraded to a nice quality reel (I just got it spooled at Pacific Angler today) so im eager to get out. Ive been sitting here all evening watching your previous videos. (your bobber lure combo in low water tip is a must try for some coho) We've been longtime fans for a while now. My lady and I truly enjoy your adventures and tips along the way. (I just need a nice Shimano Rod now to pair with my Miravel) so if you wanna get rid of any of your 9-10 ft Med-Med heavy rods, Ide be honored to get one from you personally haha. Not sure if its possible, but hey, worth a shot kind fella!!

@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 3 ай бұрын
Thanks! The spinning rods used are a Shimano Clarus CSS96M2D, 9'6" long, rated 8-12lb, and G.Loomis IMX-PRO 1173-2S STR, 9'9" long, rated 8-17lb. The spinning reels are Shimano Stradic 2500HG. I'd go with a 3000 instead next time, a bit more line on the spool for the cast would be better. The Clarus series has been discontinued, and replaced with the Compre series, which you'll be able to find a model with the same specs as well.

Isn't that beach incredible I fished it this July long weekend never got a bite but loved everything about it and the area. That Jack mackerel was cool for sure so many different things you can catch in the ocean. Brendon Morrison has a video where he catches a yellowtail tuna in close to shore while coho fishing you should check it out. As always Rod I loved your video just one question what time of summer is this maybe next year I take a later vacation.
