Honestly most of your criticisms regarding not having more character moments was because the movie cut them out. Tanaka had a service ace and a few cut shots in the manga, Asahi had a lot of powerful spike and a waterfall ball, Nishinoya had an insane foot save, Daichi had a few clutch moments too. Yaku and Yamamoto moments were cut out too. The match in the manga is a culmination of Karasuno and Nekoma while the movie mostly Hinata and Kenma. If you are open to reading the manga you should check it out.

Kenma being the main character of the movie was actually a clear directive from director Mitsunaka! That’s the direction he had in mind from the start, and even if you look at the credits, where it’s usually Karasuno first and then other teams, this time it’s Hinata and Kenma together at the top. Sadly, due to time constraints, a lot of character moments had to be cut out, so watching the movie and then reading the manga might be the best way to enjoy the match. Mitsunaka actually felt like he gave Haikyuu all he could after S3, but he was willing to come back only for a movie, since that means more space and budget to work - like that 1st POV sequence, which he’s had in mind for years (since at least S2, where you can see a bit of it in the OP). Another point is that while they maybe could’ve made it longer in theory and included more, they realized that the cinema would attract people who have not engaged with Haikyuu before in any way, so ideally it had to be digestible and not overwhelming for first-time viewers, hence the relative saturation with flashbacks and narrow character focus (and there were plenty of people who picked the manga/anime up after watching the movie, so it seems to have worked well). Thank you for a great reaction, been waiting for it for a long time! We’ve still got some even more incredible stuff coming in Haikyuu, and I already excited for your future reactions to it :"D (so far only the other movie is announced but I’m on copium hoping for additional announcements either in December or in March since this movie did perform very well)

Peak cinema, literally. The animation randomly popping off for Kuroo and Tsukki, the POV shot at the end, all the plot lines tying together, amazing stuff. Kuroo and Kenma's flashback. Nekomata sensei's role in Kuroo's development as a player. His philosophy of enjoying what you do right from the start so that you can try harder. You genuinely aren't supposed to care who wins this match, for once this is a rare match that is being played simply for the enjoyment of us viewers. And I love Hinata celebrating so hard when Kenma says that he's having fun. P.S. I strongly recommend y'all read the manga. It's just another level of amazing.

One of most underrated moments for me in this movie was during the Kenma and Kuro flashback. When Kuro says you have to be tall to spike and coach Nekomata says to lower the net and "the first and most important lesson to teach is how fun it is to succeed at something". Man, that moment stayed with me. It’s a powerful reminder of how success, especially when enjoyed and appreciated, can be a transformative experience in sports and life. And we see how being able to spike was a moment that stayed with Kuro.

It felt like I was trapped in a prism of rope war while watching this movie tbh. On the one hand, I'm happy that Haikyuu got the production care and propagation it deserves, flattering its key moments with rich emphasis and animation; at the same time, it displaces the grounds on how the series earned its reverence through its characters because of the natural constraints of a movie. No specific spoilers in case they read the manga, but I was pretty let down to see the third years+Tanaka and the literal deuteragonist in Kageyama getting waved in this adaption.

As someone who has long read the manga, there is a lot that has been cut that fixes up the whole character moment issues you guys had. However, as cool as those scenes are, they aren't necessary than what you already know. I think the choice of a going for a movie instead of a season 5 is for the best. Mainly because of "quality" of animation. If Blue Lock, the most sold manga of last year had such stiff animation drop, I don't think I'm confident in seeing a new season with consistently good animation, especially how Season 4 of Haikyuu went (tbf covid). There's also the matter of pacing with one match for one movie. It feels like I'm actually watching a volleyball game. Putting a direct focus of Kenma as the main character is really enjoyable.

Haikyuu is spelt with two u's in Roman alphabet just as a means to make it read the way it's pronounced in Japanese. In Japanese they use a little line to extend a vowel sound, making "uu" the easiest way to have non-Japanese speakers pronounce it accurately. Also haikyuu is the old native Japanese word for volleyball, though they nowadays use the english loanword バレーボール (which is pronounced something like bareebooru). So the show is literally called Volleyball!!

@vdinh14315 күн бұрын
Someone probably already got to this point already, but I'll leave some info here anyway: 1. Haikyuu and Haikyū are both valid ways to write the word 排球 in romaji. The "u" sound is a long vowel and needs to be distinguished from the short "u" vowel. This is done in several ways: - In Hiragana, the long vowel is written with an extra character あ (a), い (i) or う (u) depending on what the original vowel is. E.g. おばあさん - In Katakana, the long vowel is written with a dash character instead of a duplicate character. E.g. ハイキュー!! - In Romaji, the long vowel is similarly written with a duplicate character: E.g. Haikyuu, or with a single vowel character accented with an overhead dash: Haikyū Example: Onii-chan (older brother) is usually written with two "i" characters because it's supposed to be a long vowel. Oni with a short "i" refers to a Japanese folklore demon instead. Similarly, Obaa-san is a way to refer to a grandma whereas Oba-san is for a middle-aged woman. Mixing these up can be disastrous. 2. Haikyuu itself (排球) is just the Japanese native vocabulary for the sport of volleyball. Modern Japan uses the loanword "varebooru" or just "vare" instead.

It's a movie, a lot is cut out, that's just how "book vs movie" works, but one thing i felt very strongly in the manga and not so much in the movie here is the perspective change. Throughout the entire anime we see everything from karasunos perspective. Every time karasuno feels like the underdog facing an uphill battle against overwhelming opponents, but this time in the manga we see it from nekomatas perspective facing karasuno feeling like an overhelming opponent that again and again came out on top agains teams that nekomata admits they couldn't have won against.

16:38 it was bad because he was focusing so much on aiming, in the manga we see Kenma going to whoever had to serve and telling them where to aim, since the start we see that they have a strategy, even before it's explained we see that something isn't right, in the manga at least 18:36 this set is very risky because high tosses are difficult to hit and by the time a spiker is there the blockers are already in position, that's what he meant by "we have three blockers", besides Hinata always relys on speed, which this doesn't have, that's why Kenma was so surprised, but even then in the manga the BOOM jump wasn't enough, Nekoma adapted quickly to it, they needed a lot of other plays in order to defeat them 20:04 nop, he has always been unhinged, he gets more and more in the manga, but it was there from the start, you wouldn't believe how crazy they actually are, especially Daichi. Tanaka for example, gives the middle finger as much as he does weird faces 22:51 I know you love Tanaka, but it's important to know that that's Nekoma's specialty, you worry so much about the receivers that you either don't see the blockers or to try to get pass them you end up hitting out 25:25 this is a move Hinata copied from their first match at nationals (every match matters) where you make the receivers think it's a feint so they get closer and then you wipe, so no one is behind to defend 30:00 this was a huge thing for Kuroo because he always felt guilty beleiving he forced Kenma to do something he didn't want, so having him reassure him he was having fun was just as big as if they had won the match 33:01 funny you mention Bokuto, because in the manga they show more players that have that mindset, one of them is Bokuto (who also hugs and congratulates both teams, it's so sweet) The handshake was even more emotional to me in the manga because we actually got a whole backstory on them two, it's beautiful, and I was already crying with the backstory, which was told before the match even began, so I was crying through the whole match Personally I was rooting for Nekoma, even though I was reading the manga, and knew 99% that Karasuno was going to win, I wanted Nekoma to beat them... Apparently there is only one movie, but there is toooo much left from the manga

I really love the movie, I do, it's amazing and beautiful but I hate how much they cut. In most matches we get to know something from at least two or three players from other teams and the rest get their moment, but in this match we already knew every single member so there were no need for introduction to their character, we got something from everyone, every single character from both teams. I knew they had to cut when they turn it into a movie, and with the time they had they did a fantastic job, but while I knew when going to see it that they cut a lot, and I even knew that my favourite parts weren't there I was still amazed at just how much they cut. I'll give examples, but it will sound a bit to harsh and that I don't appreciate the movie, I do, and I don't fault those who worked on it, they did an amazing job with what they were give, I'm only faulting the ones that decided to make it a movie, if you don't want to read criticism then it's fine, as I said it's a great movie, I really liked it but I do wish we had the many awsome or emotional moments that were cut. Everyone had their own moment or more than one that weren't in, Tanaka, Daichi, Kageyama, Yamamoto, Yaku! anyone from either team, Inokua had a way larger part, in the movie I don't really see the impact he had, hell, even Kenma had more amazing moments and Hinata was way smarter and did a lot of tactics, he didn't just rely on Kageyama's set and the BOOM jump. The movie was very Kenma vs Hinata but the manga was how it was set up from even before their year, since the old coaches, Karasuno vs Nekoma. I feel they rushed to much the first set. We rarely get to see a full set of Karasuno losing, especially animated, they usually rush through them (like the 3 set in shiratorizawa that was longer in the manga while in anime they almost didn't show a single point) Even though I knew Nekoma was going to win that set, I felt Karasuno was scoring more, until they showed the score board and apparently Nekoma was in the lead, I didn't feel that by the way it was presented. When they lost Daichi was beatting himself up for it because it was his ball to receive, and then he redimed himself. Karasuno also celebrated waaay more winning the second set, and with reason, it was the first time they took a single set from them!! It was to the point that people passing by thought they were celebrating winning the match, not just the set. Also, yes, the animation and direction was amazing but every time they did an amazing rally my first thought wasn't about the quality, it was "Wait! we are already at that rally!? but what about x,y and z rally? they were important" they rushed through the sets in a match against a defense specialist, where the rallys were made to feel looooong and eternal on pourpose What also hurt me was the subtle yet significant change in Kuroo's backstory, in the manga it was all about him actually being super shy, even more than Kenma, the complete opposite to movie Kenma's "he was always like that", I was like "NoO!? What do you mean he was always like that? he wasn't", the way it was presented in the manga made me cry, probably because I relate quite a lot, I don't know it hit different. And don't get me started on the libero moments that were cut!! They usually don't get as much attention, and they cut the most coolest moments from both of them! In a match with a defense specialist team!?? There were also scenes such as Tsukki telling Kuroo "thanks to everyone it's fun" that were just a tad longer but that made it more impactful and emotional to me. And also Daichi and Kuroo had a speech that ended with "that's why we hate those guys" showing both teams smiling at each other... It just... there were many moments like those that were soooo emotional to me And Kenma!! I liked the first person pov, I really do, it's amazingly done, I wouldn't change that for the world, but the faces Kenma was making, especially at Lev, they were priceless!! The "idoit! The ball hasn't fallen yet!" and "It hurts..., I'm tired...I don't want it to end" they had more focuse since we could see Kenma's desperation (and weren't just amazed and focused with the animation), and it was incredible I know it was impossible from the get go to have every single scene, unless it was like 3 hs long, I'm aware, and I know they did better, way better than expected, I'm just a bit sad that some will never read the match at it's full potential, also, I'm scared since they did that with the most anticipated match, I don't know how they'll handle what's left. Besides, the reason I find the ending pperfect, personally, is because they take every single detail and give it a satisfying resolution, if they cut those moments then the ending looses it's impact

As many people said in the comments, the movie for what it is, it's good. But, and a big but, your complains about how they didn't have a lot of character moments is because they did actually cut off a lot of the those moments, like a lot. There was a lot of drama and tension built up from the ground up in every set and the stakes felt soo high and the movie just felt...rushed in a weird way. Sure it had great animation and that I will say was amazing, but story wise it was soo cut up. There were moments in the manga that left you dumbfounded because certain players were highlighted in ways that movie just did not. For example, tanaka and asahi, your comment of asahi getting points quietly on the side was something that did not happen. He was the main scorer in the manga and it was almost a great way of wrapping up his story arc of finally living up to the title ace and finally being able to show that confidence. Without spoilers about what happens in the next in the manga, I am really worried on how they approach it, there is a lot of material to cover still for just 1 movie even a small 4 episode series would be enough to cover a lot of the material so they could have the right amount of material for a closing movie.

We haven't seen a major Asahi focus since S1 Dateko, but we have seen him cooking in the background: his more resilient mindset in S4 training against Dateko, successfully performing his new move Crusher/Pulverizer (named by Suga) against Inarizaki, his new move Waterfall against Nekoma. Asahi also took inspiration from Ushiwaka by improving his mid-air form, and strategically mixing in a few feints against Nekoma. All of these are meant to culminate in his best moments against Kamomedai; kinda like how much Hinata has stacked his skillset now since S2 training arc & especially the ball boy arc. It's a long buildup and it's easy to overlook Asahi & Tsukki's slower evolution compared to Hinata, but imo, Kamomedia match has the best moments for these 2 as well. But I fear it will be the same as this movie, where we only focus on Hinata and the main antagonist, Hoshiumi. 19:20 It's actually realistic. In fact, Hinata's Boom Jump is more realistic than S1 Freak Quick. In the manga & movie, the angle they 1st show the Boom Jump is low, to exaggerate how it looks like. But in any other angle since, it's a very realistic play with so much complexity, game IQ from Hinata, and the synergy between Kageyama & Hinata on when to use it. In fact, in this 1st attempt at the Boom Jump, Hinata fails to hit the ball correctly, but still accidentally scored. It's realistic that Hinata failed because Kageyama didn't even tell Hinata that he wanted to try the super high toss, but Kageyama has seen Hinata trying to jump higher since Hinata saw Hoshiumi jump. 19:49 There's an official art/panel in the manga of this moment where Kenma is the mage in the hero's party (white robes), while Hinata is dressed like a (mini) demon king (full black armor w/ horns in his head). In the manga, there are so many panels since nationals started where we see other teams' POV where they get intimated by Karasuno because they defeated Shiratorizawa & Inarizaki. An example is when Nekoma was explaining that it's not just Hinata who evolved from "club" to "oni/demon", it's the entire Karasuno team that has evolved since S2. The chapter is called "Demon Birds", and the last panel where Karasuno is drawn made them look very intimidating like they're villains. 30:52 Garbage Dump is Chapter 293 and they start it with the backstory of Old Ukai & Coach Nekomata. So I sobbed at this spiritual handshake in both manga & movie. Also young Nekomata was like a HOT version of Suga. Suga's cute, but more wholesome. Young Nekomata had some intensity. 38:00 ...Nekoma arc is 1 arc squeezed in less than 2 hrs. If the announcement that the next movie is indeed the Finale-Finale, they need to squeeze 3 arcs in the final movie.

I think from the recent developments on Haikyuu!!, it was mentioned that they're going to animate the rest of the series, given how much manga content is remaining. Based on this and how the post-credits scene set up the "Battle of the Little Giants", one can surmise/guess that the next movie MIGHT solely focus on Karasuno vs. Kamomedai and that there MIGHT be more material beyond this supposedly one remaining movie---so let's hope for the best! ^__^

The manga was truly meant for a whole season. The movie is great but every1 loved haikyuu because of that extra oomph. That flair and drama that makes subtle moments seem so epic. But cant complain cause it's either this or nothing at all😂 All I can say for the next final Movie ( which I do hope they break into 2 parts ugh) is that PREPARE TO CRY. 😂 I dont cry for shows or stories but it was Haikyu that turned that switch on and I get emotional over the good music they have😂 I really like the final chapters of the manga. It's one of those mangas where the ending is just fulfilling or you're left somewhat content. And that's a rare scenario when it comes to storytelling. But what I loved about the ending was the resolution of Hinata's goals w regards to being the Little Giant. That's all I can spoil hahaha😂

Great reaction as always! It is more than just fun to watch Haikyuu with you guys🥰 Someone might have already mentioned this, but 'Haikyuu' is a Japanese word that means volleyball, although the word is rarely used except in special cases. As a Japanese person, I've never heard anyone use 'haikyuu' in a conversation in my life (we just use the English word "volleyball" in general ). BTW, basketball is pronounced 'lowkyuu' in Japanese, but this term is also not used in daily life. Even though I already knew the story from the manga, it was still a pleasure to see the characters in motion. As a result, I went to the theater to watch the movie more than 10 times. Still I hope you’ll see what wonderful adults they become in manga. They’re amazing right to the very end.

Saw the title = Auto Like! I only wished this battle was made into a series instead of a movie. There would've been so many totally hype moments there (in the manga) and it was obviously not put in the movie, which is understandable. But great reaction as always! Unto the next one 🔥🔥🔥

26:35 yes that is exactly why Hinata does this awesome battle cry here. Maybe even more than winning the match his specific motivation in this match against Nekoma was making Kenma desperate and to get him to say that he had fun. Nothing could be sweeter than that.

Well haikyuu it's spell with 2 u in our vocabulary because in japanesse they use a character to pronounce some vocals a little longer and the the title haikyuu in katakana is ハイキュー where the dash is like adding another u so you pronounce it a little longer. And also about the other question, haikyuu is literally volleyball in japanesse :D (i actually speak spanish so i don't know if i explain it clearly enough, sorry if i wrote any word wrong)

I wish for another season so bad! This movie worked really well because it only focused on one match, but I'm afraid that if they try to fit everything into one last movie, a lot of small details will be left out to make space for the important scenes.

I just hope they reconsider finishing this adaptation with just movies and just give us new seasons, cause there's a lot of scenes in the manga that are worth seeing be animated. i wanna hear and see the pages move through this adaptation sadly it's coming to an end in just movies where they always cut a lot of scenes in the manga to fit it. however, this is still a good movie and i really love how they animated it, i'm just sad there's a lot of good and iconic moments that has been cutted here from the manga.

I believe tearing up during this movie is the most normal thing you could do. When I first watched it I legit cried so much I had to pause the movie for a bit after Kenma finally had fun during a match, it reminded me so much of my favourite times with the sport. I also totally agree with preferring another season instead of a movie, while the movie budget definitely inhanced most of the match, there was also a lot of cut content I would've liked to see (especially from Nekoma's team but also a lot of Kageyama content).

Something I'm just picking up on is that Kags really does still respect Hinata as an opponent when he interrupts his moment with Kenma after the match. He sees Hinata is getting better and he refuses to let him surpass him. Their rivalry/comradery is shown in such small ways but it feels like Kageyama is almost getting more weary of Hinata xD

Everyone saying it was worth making this match a movie because of the killer animation, I'm sorry, did we watch the same film? Don't get me wrong, it looks LEAGUES better than To-The-Top, but that's an insanely low bar to cover. Aside from a few sakuga moments there are numerous times I'm flabbergasted by how jank the characters look. There's even a few times where they re-use animations... IN A MOVIE! Peak from my persective was Season 3, and you can't change my mind. No, we didn't get the spikes in animation that we did in this film, but the animation was consistent, crisp and captured the physics of a volleyball match better than anything we saw in this movie. Add to that the fact that you could double the runtime of the movie and still not cover all the character moments they skipped, and I'm done. An adaptation should be finding ways to add to the source material, not take it away. EDIT: For that matter, there's a ton of whole match long storylines that got completely cut in their attempt to make it 'movie length', the major one being related to hinata: Hinata's quick shutdown actually runs a few layers deeper than we got to see in the movie. Kenma actually had several rotations in mind before the match started, and when he saw Karasuno's rotation gave all of Nekoma very specific spots to aim at in order to shut down the quick. More than that, comments that seem 'one off' in the film like Kageyama's "Don't sit back and gloat because you got a recieve" are given far more weight in the manga, and Karasuno takes far more time strategising through how to deal with Kenma's tactics. Because this time is taken and given more weight, moments like Kenma's "Stay interesting" and Hinata's sweat slip hit far harder in the manga because they're given time to breathe. This also ties into my most hated change to the match; Hinata's resolve. In the Movie it seems like Hinata is completely down in the dumps and obsessing over his weaknesses until Kageyama hits him with the Dun set. The idea is Kageyama saved Hinata. In the manga, when Hinata has his sweat slip... he's actually *already* ok. We get the 'there is no shortcut to scoring points' realisation a bit later, but even at that point Kenma is confused because Hinata doesn't seem down or frustrated. He simply gets up and keeps playing, and Kenma proceeds to get EVEN MORE frustrated when Hinata recieves ball after ball without compromising. It's this unfailing determination that inspires Kageyama to set Hinata, not the other way around. But because the moment is rushed, spaced out of order to account for runtime and generally shortened for runtime reasons, the meaning of the moment is completely undercut. Here's a few more minor ones: - Tanaka, Kageyama and Asahi are competing with each other all game when it comes to serves, and it's made very clear in the manga that without this constantly rivalry Karasuno would've been curtains from the start. -Kageyama in the manga has a running story of refining his serve to try and take serves from Kai, Nekoma's best non libero reciever. His first serve is handled easily (this is the one shown at the start), but a big deal is made of Kageyama repeatedly trying the same serve getting closer and closer to the sideline until he finally blasts one past Kai later in the match, impressing the hell out of him. Finally this is used towards the end as bait when Kageyama smashes one to the opposing side, leaving Nekoma in dissaray -Asahi is completely shafted in this adaptation, with his improved confidence and tenacity against Nekoma's defence being highlighted constantly in the manga resulting in many great moments such as the oft described 'waterfall ball' being omitted. For those who have read the manga, this also gets rid of a lot of setup for another amazing moment in the upcoming match. If you know you know - Yaku's comment at the end praising Hinata for threading the needle lands completely flat, because past Hinata's DUN jump, the entire match is sped up to account for time. There is actually a constant battle between Hinata and Yaku in order to deal with Hinata's DUN jump after it's revealed where Yaku and Kenma deliberately tell the blockers to leave a gap just so Hinata can thread it, banking on Hinata's improved skill. - Tamahiko literally only gets this match for screentime in the WHOLE of Haikyuu, and his relevence is completely undercut. His skyball serve is a deliberate plan Kenma made before the match, which he felt was undercut by Karasuno having to deal with it before. But none of this phases Tamahiko, who despite the commentators observing he has every reason to be nervous ignores them and delivers a perfect serve on the first try. - Whilst Tsukki's moments in this match are given some time to breathe, because they were all used as chapter enders or with more setup in the manga, simply don't land with the same weight here. In particular, Tsukki's 'how are you enjoying volleyball lately' Kuro's reply are COMPLETELY sidelined almost immediately for an anime original segue into Kuro wishing Kenma could do the same, because EVERYTHING has to be about Hinata and Kenma. - Coach Ukai and Coach Nekomata's rivalry and the idealistic differences between Karasuno and Nekoma are completely shafted by removing one of the best flashbacks in the manga. This also removes the analogue of Kenma vs. Nekomata as two of a kind, and undercuts the 'stay connected' theme of the whole match. All in all, anyone saying there wasn't enough to fill a 10 episode season are laughing, there's actually MORE content to cover here than the Shiratorizawa or Inarizaki match because of the personal stakes for the characters and the incredibly long sets due to Nekoma's stubborn recieving. The fact that it was shoehorned into a film is unforgivable.

Amazing movie! My only problem with it is it's too short. The more I watch, the more I wish they made a new season instead cause I know the character moments would have hit way harder with a longer build-up like in the previous seasons. For example, Yamaguchi's serve and block combo with Tsukki plus their high five scene in the manga would be a way bigger moment if this was in a TV/episode format. Noya had a dedicated character moment during this match too that were cut in the movie but would be given the proper screen time if it was a season. It's been a while since I read the manga but I'm pretty sure there were more scenes that highlighted Karasuno's individual players in that arc (Kageyama and Tanaka just off the top of my head). But since this was a movie they had to prioritize a more singular direction. I think that's where the Kenma/Nekoma POV decision came from. The Karasuno moments that were focused on had to do with the main Nekoma players' interactions. The big one being Kenma's story with Hinata. Another is Kuroo's influence on Tsukki and so on. Overall this movie was an awesome experience but I fully agree with Carlie, we need at least 2.5 hours of Haikyuu per movie 😆
