We went Inside one of America's Oldest Golf Clubs

Not only does Essex County Country Club consistently rank in the Top 100 golf courses in the United States, it's also rich in history and holds the title of being the "oldest country club in New Jersey."

Essex County Country Club dates all the way back to1887 making it the sixth oldest country club in the United States! ECCC was part of the MGA and NJSGA from the get-go, and they were actually one of the 25 clubs that helped kickstart the USGA. Now, let's talk about the golf course - it's like a mash-up of golf legends' ideas. First, it was AW Tillinghast who did the original design back in 1917, and it was such a hit that it pretty much launched his career. Then, in 1928, Seth Raynor and Charles Banks came along and did some redesign magic. They kept seven of Tillinghast's holes and gave birth to what some folks call "the best back nine in NJ."
ECCC also has a "who's who" list of members including a a US Secretary of State, a US Secretary of the Navy, a bunch of US Senators, and even some NJ State Governors. Plus, they've had big-shot business and arts folks like Colgate, Merck, Chubb, and Pfizer. But the real showstopper was Thomas Edison - yeah, the lightbulb guy. He was part of the club from 1889 till he passed in 1931. Three US Presidents (Wilson, T. Roosevelt, and Taft), baseball legend Babe Ruth, Hollywood icon Bob Hope, and golf legends like Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen, Byron Nelson, and Sam Snead all visited the club as well. Needless to say, ECCC is a pretty big deal, and we're excited to feature it in this episode of Inside the Gates.

This series is fantastic! I guess [maybe] being from Northern NJ might make it a little more interesting or special, but you guys edit it down to such great content...everyone can enjoy it. I love the interjections & commentaries throughout each episode! I also like the teases at the close...ACC, this time was most amusing to me...as I drive by the entrance, almost daily! I dream of the day when my urge to pull into the entrance becomes a reality [someday]! It [ACC], can also be seen from some of the local highways [if you know where to look], I usually slow down and daydream for a millisecond! 😊 I play most of my golf up the road from ACC & get to see another gem on the back 9...I'm hoping that one is part of this series...some of the local GOLFICITY community may know! 😂 ❤ the series and am especially looking forward to the next one...then can't wait for what's next and then the 'coup de gras'...PV!!!
