This reaction made me feel young again, brought back some intense memories, being the movie I saw on the first real date I was ever on. She was reluctant to see it and it really freaked her out, had me drop her off home right after and I thought I had really messed up. I was wrong, the next day she called and apologized and asked for a do-over. We saw Stand By Me a few days later and she loved it (me too, good movie) and we were together for almost a year until she went to college. Cam hit the nail on the head when he mentioned the question of what is really happening if a teleportation device is essentially killing you and building a new version of yourself on the other side. This movie explores that question in a terrifying way. Of course it's not the same person on the other side. Its something, or someone, else. And just to prove that point, lets see what happens when you throw a fly and a person into the mix together.
@Gunnar001 Жыл бұрын
Similar to Star Trek’s transporters and whether they’re death machines or not. Are they really transporting the same person from one place to another? Or are they simply killing the original person by disintegrating and turning them into energy and then materializing a perfect copy at a different location? This new copy would have no idea it was a copy if it had all the memories of the original right up to the point of being transported. Then this copy would later be killed when transporting somewhere else. A copy of a copy of a copy of a copy, etc etc. How would you know if you were the true you or not? I think this may have been part of the reason why Dr. McCoy never liked using transporters in the original show and movies.
@orchidwave2574 Жыл бұрын
@@Gunnar001 If you're being recreated to the atomic level...an electron is an electron is an electron. A water molecule is a water molecule. If, say, the brain can be duplicated down to the very electrons and protons, how would you not have the same brain in the same state - same with the rest of the body? Remember, just day to day living you're sort of replacing your material constantly with material that wasn't part of you before. You're materially a different person when you wake up than when you went to bed, right? Cells have died, other cells have divided, metabolism has converted this molecule to some other molecule...and you don't think twice about whether or not you're still you. The scenario in teleportation is just swapping out the molecules you have now with the same molecules in the exact same configuration as before. If anything, you would be 'dead' for a split second and alive a moment later....less difference than the difference between the you of last night and the you of this morning.

The original, 1950s version of the story, can’t match this one in the special effects area, but is a very strong film in its own right - well worth watching. •••• There are many filters through which it’s possible to view this story. One that the director talks about, on the DVD track, is the filter of a man who gets a terminal illness that changes his body as he approaches death, and how he and the people closest to him, deal with it. •••• This movie’s script is indeed the origin of the popular phrase, “Be afraid. Be very afraid.” •••• One of the key producers of this film was Mel Brooks. He deliberately kept his name out of the film’s credits, because he knew that his brand was heavily associated with comedy (which this movie was not.) If people had made the connection between this film and, “Mel Brooks, the comedian,” they would have gotten the wrong idea about what sort of film this was. This was a very solid, "Do what is necessary for the success of the end product" move on Brooks's part. (You do see the name "Brooks" in the credits, but you would not make the connection with •Mel• Brooks.) •••• Other than the 1958 version of ‘The Fly,’ there are three major motion pictures that deal with ‘teleportation mishaps’ in at least parts of their story: Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) (where it’s an incident, but not at all the story’s main focus); this film (which plays it for drama) and, Galaxy Quest (1999), which plays the mishap for laughs.

AWESOME REACTION! I was 17 when I first watched this film back in the 80s- filmed in my old hometown of Toronto (Ontario, Canada). Cam is just lucky they left out the deleted "Monkey-Cat" scene. As Seth tries to figure out how to reduce the fly DNA in him, he experiments by putting a cat in with the OTHER remaining baboon. The "Monkey-Cat" that comes out goes wild and viciously attacks Seth, who has to beat it to death with a lead pipe. Afterwards we discover what the "bulge in Seth's abdomen" is- a "fly leg" that bursts through his skin... Which Seth then *bites off with his teeth*. Even the test audiences couldn't handle that so it was all left out. Poor Seth- all he wanted to do was create a new form of transportation because he suffered from motion sickness.

Actually the accurate concept behind Teleportation and this film , is : The device doesn't KILL you. It breaks down your structure at the atomic level , and reassembles it again on the other side. Still you, like in star trek..it merely (deconstructs you , and puts you back together. The film however studies upon the what it premise. "What If" an insect is trapped in the Pod with you when you get " Deconstructed" , and when you are reassembled your DNA, and Genes have been Mixed on the atomic level with the insect , making you an entirely different species that never existed before.

The use of the boss is very important because that would be how an ex who happens to be your boss would act. And the 2nd lady was right in how he was the reason that set off the events that happened. And typical of a man with power he lost his girlfriend because he felt he was doing her a favor by being with her and when she lost interest in him and started to see another man he realized he wasn’t as important and powerful as he thought he was which was proven when he showered at her house and she shot him down. I believe he loved her in his own twisted wrong way so when she needed him he was there. It was organic and well acted. So him arriving with a shot gun to help her in the end to me did not come off as a script written to make him a hero, just a man who honestly had nothing going on in his life and someone he loved and cared about was in danger. Great movie and how Jeff Goldblum did t win any awards for his performance is crazy. Even with heavy make up he was able to make gestures with his eyes and the twitching along with those eye gestures was unreal. The practical effects were also incredible. A true Cronenberg horror masterpiece. Much like the Exorcist this movie has aged very well
