I doubt people will see this comment, but I’m a new anime fan, and Goku was my introduction to anime. I got caught into other shows like Sailor Moon, Naruto and others shows, so I didn’t have time for Goku and friends. I got back into DBZ intending to finish it, and hearing this every episode reminds me that my time with Goku is almost done. DBZ has been an absolute ride, and I don’t ever want it to end. My love for Goku and friends is well over 9000, and I will forever love Goku for being my introduction to the wonderful world of anime. He truly is #1

0:15 Start Speaking Kakarot... You really are something else. I think I finally figured it out. I think I know why genius like me can't keep up with you. I thought it was because you had people you wanted to protect. It was as if having a strong desire to save others gave you some mysterious power. And maybe it does in some ways. I too, have those I care about now. But, you're always different. You don't fight to win. You fight to continue pushing yourself, past your own limits. That's why you never took the lives of your opponents. You...You even had the opportunity to kill me. But you didn't... You didn't! Damn you, Kakarot! I can't believe a battle loving, kind hearted, Saiyan like you even exists! Only you can do this. You are number one.

i've left a similar message back during kazuki takahashi's own passing back in 2022, so i don't really have anythin longer to say, i suppose. but upon seeing that post in the official twitter just minutes ago from posting this? i had difficulty analyzing the info. i just couldn't accept it. dragon ball in my country, the philippines, is a VERY renowned name. anime has long had a profound influence here, but dragon ball was like none other. in tricycle sidings you can find pictures of gotenks, goku, piccolo, etc. while you can argue that there's been more of one piece after the fact, dragon ball's world has still withstood the test of time in animation and style. the fights in the manga are some of my favorites ever because of the visual direction toriyama chose to undergo, and it's why i habitually read it around my teenage years (albeit my first engagement with it was with kai back in 2011.) i've fully engaged with db by 2016 during the future trunks arc. i first started seriously watching it when zamasu was cut into half by trunks. i don't think highly of it in retrospect, but it was my gateway to the larger sphere of anime culture till today. i was there when i hear from friends from mexico that they're holding lap dances (lmao) for goku vs jiren. those live showings where they get hundreds or thousands of people to witness goku and jiren fight it out in the last stretch of dbs's run. i think the iconography of goku is just far too much of a symbol to ignore. i'm not gonna act like i like every single thing out of dragon ball, even ones that have high reception, but i do respect the influence it has a lot. there's a lot of love and direction put into it and i loved its innocent and simple but effective style of both panelling and drawing. my favorite arc remains the 23rd tenkaichi budokai, but i also understand why people love freeza, cell, boo, and even the tournament of power. goku overcoming each foe is just far too integrated into why people love this character. goku is everyone. when he calls for people to lend him their power, everyone will raise their hands to charge up that genkidama and send the evil to the next dimension. you can find goku ANYWHERE. you can find people knowin how to turn super saiyan or how to do a kamehame(ha) wave. he's essentially the quintessential character of youth, and i hope people find it within themselves to carry that character of goku as well just as i did in myself. goodbye, toriyama.
