Fun fact! The jumpscare scene of nurse Keating acted as inspiration for Team Silent creating nurse Lisa Garland in Silent Hill 1. She wears the same red cardigan and nurse uniform. "It's a wonderfull life" was also referenced in the otherworld hospital in Silent Hill 3. I really loved it, honestly after reading Legion (the book this film is based off of) I really feel that this is one of the best book to film adaptations ever made. There are definitely elements changed, but I felt that the changes were to compliment the medium, rather than feeling like elements were cut or discarded. Like in the book, Kinderman is a real big weirdo who constantly changes subjects in the same sentence and asks a lot of existential questions constantly. Hes extremely quirky. William Peter Blatty definitely kept elements of that (like the "im so sorry you got murdered" line is definitely something Kinderman in the book would say), but I think if he was directly adapted people would be really annoyed and uninterested. Also, the actor for the Gemini killer (Brad Dourif) was fucking incredible. He gave such an intense performance that it was captivating. P.S: I highly suggest the book too, it is still a horror novel like The Exorcist but it is also a really captivating murder mystery. The film and book compliment each other super well.

This is my favorite Exorcist movie- the dialogue between Father Dyer and Detective Kinderman is sublime. @@kristennelson3190 Ha- right? It wasn’t the first time it happened with him, either. I had to sell a lot of my things some years back because I was broke (for various reasons, mostly my own fault though), and the ones that I regretted most were my books. I had built up quite a collection at that point (I was around 40 then), and it contained a lot of out-of-print and hard to find books, first editions, and other rarities. In desperation, I let a lot of them go for a lot less than their actual value. I have slowly been trying to rebuild my collection over the past 7 or 8 years, but many of them are either not available, or are simply out of my price range. I’m one of those people who likes to reread books that left an impression on my way of thinking, or that were just really enjoyable- it’s like they bring me to a place in my head that I find very comfortable, and just by rereading them I can go back to that same place anytime I wish. I guess I was so upset by his carelessness with something that was so important to me, and the fact that he never even tried to replace it was very telling about his character. Wow- sorry for leaving such a long reply! Anyway, thanks for your comment, and for bringing that website to my attention- I’ve never heard of it, so I’ll have to check it out. During the dream scene, the tarot cards that are laid out tell about the movie's climax. Judgment: Rite of Passage, maturing, reviewing, transition. The Emperor: Power, structure, stability, authority, father. The World: Integration, completion, options, wholeness, the earth, correction. The Devil: Attachments, restriction, commitment, limitations. Lined up in a 4 card spread is telling Wiliam what he'll have to face and that he'll be able to overcome it all. As all the cards are right side up. Meaning they have positive outcomes if he can see the signs in time. The devil card is last, so that will be the challenge Willam will have to face to bring out all the positive aspects of each card. And while the Emperor card primarily relates to Dire, the other cards are all about Willam overcoming the challenge of finding the murderer and solving the case. Side note: I don't really like doing tarot readings because of how structured they are. I stick with Oracle cards because they are more free-flowing. But for anyone who is curious about the cards and what they meant I hope this helps. ^^

@ninamiller001 Жыл бұрын
Great video, you are terrific at this. Somebody probably said this already in the comments but in case they didn't, a few points of information - Blatty was a professional screenwriter under contract with (I forget which studio) for decades. Among other movies he worked on the script for the 2nd Pink Panther movie and a bunch of 1960s-era comedies. At one point he shared an apartment with Warren Beatty, and he had plenty of Hollywood friends who, like his, were working in the industry. He also already had a directing credit for The Ninth Configuration. So whoever said he was a novelist who thought he could walk in and be a screenwriter and director had it exactly backwards - he was a screenwriter who wrote the screenplay for The Exorcist and then turned it into a novel (which was released before the movie, bc shorter production time for a book obvs). Blatty was also very well educated and had actually studied to be a priest early on. The Exorcist trilogy - according to Blatty, it is (1) The Exorcist, (2) The Ninth Configuration, and (3) Legion - are thought exercises in the theological concepts he found interesting. If you watch the three films from the perspective of Blatty using his screenwriting skills to share his interpretation of of the big metaphysical questions - why are we here; why is there suffering; is evil "necessary" in order to have good; what is the afterlife in relation to life - its great stuff. I'm not religious at all but I find the intellectual puzzles Blatty put together in these films very engaging. For me the best thing about this movie is the performances. Everyone brought their A-game. Dourif is at his ferocious best in this film. The pathos that Jason Miller delivers in his final line is haunting. You can tell all the actors gpt what Blatty was trying to achieve by the amount of emotion they brought to their characters. George C. Scott brings Kinderman's suffering forward so effectively. I like his speech at the end mostly for the sheer exhaustion in Scott's delivery. And Ed Flanders - his Father Dyer is so understated, he makes his voice so low key and gentle when he tells Kinderman he's been killed, you can really feel his sadness for his friend. Just outstanding work. Blatty cast some of the same actors in The Ninth Configuration and Legion - Jason Miller, Ed Flanders, Stacy Keach (who was originally cast as Father Karras before the studio demanded Jason Miller), even the woman who plays Nurse Allerton. Ninth Configuration is surrealist in style, set entirely in the afterlife, and is a lot like the Union Station dream sequence but not as colorful. It is not scary at all - no horror element to it, although there are some visual references to The Exorcist. I have the screenplay from Legion - the ending is quite different from either filmed version. Happy to share upon request.

This is definitely one of my favorite movies from the 90's. Saw it in the theater then, and it was terrifying. What made this movie so masterful was the what you didn't see. You never saw the murders themselves or the aftermath. Just hearing them describe the murders made your imagination go wild and made them even more disturbing and gruesome. And the nurse jump scare was a master stroke. Perfectly executed with maximum suspense and the payoff. The humor between Kinderman and Dyer was handled beautifully and made each other's characters and relationship very natural. The ending exorcism came a little out of left field, but compared to what Blatty had originally done, I do agree that the movie needed more of a showstopper climax. If you don't compare this to the original Exorcist, it's a classic in its own right.

I personally loved this movie. I was shocked at how good it was. I did not expected it do be a total goof like Exorcist 2. The slow build and the fact that we pretty much don't see any of the bad things happen really let your imagination go to work. The ending going off the rails with the gore, exorcism, and imagery really heats things up. Fantastic movie.

6:10 +/- The whole nuns scene.. I find it SOO cheeky that in the very next scene he’s carrying a stuffed penguin into the hosp room. 🐧”Penguin” absolutely was a slang/ slur on nuns back inthe day (see Blues Brothers for example!). So i guess thats 3 nuns, huh? & 3 is a # that demons use to mock the holy trinity (father, son, holy ghost).. Damn i gotta watch this one, i guess!! So much bizarre symbology

There is another movie out there, also directed by Blatty, called The Ninth Configuration. It’s actually connected to The Exorcist. The astronaut from the first film is one of the main characters, although played by a different actor. It’s not a horror movie in the slightest, it’s a surrealist comedy drama. Blatty considers it part of his real Exorcist trilogy. I recommend it, it’s a great film.

Brad Dourif *makes* this movie. "HE INSIDE WITH US, HE WILL NEVER GET AWAY! HIS PAIN WON'T END!" this shit randomly plays in my end like an intrusive thought.

One of my favorite takes on comedy this film does is when Brad Dourif as the Gemini Killer grows tired after a rant and says the line “child’s play…” then cuts to a red headed/freckle faced boy lookin an awful lot like Chucky, whom Dourif voiced for decades. Love that. The other scene is when Father Dyer is laid up in the hospital bed and in the background you see Kinderman RUNNING to Dyer’s room. Just before he approaches the doorway, Kinderman slows his pace, puts on a manly and stoic (un-concerned) face and marches into the room “What’s this nonsense?!!” He cares deeply for his friend, but doods can never show weakness like that so Kinderman had to straighten up before seeing his friend. The comedy in this film and Blatty’s other directorial effort The Ninth Configuration are second to none…

Man this is an amazing horror movie. Brad Dourif absolutely killed it, ate up every scene he was in. I love that guy in every movie he's in and I'd argue this is his best work. Scott is also great returning as Karras, and the detective/priest dialogue is so damn smooth.

Ok I'm gonna nerd out because these books are my favourite books. In the original Exorcist book, Kinderman has a much bigger storyline than the movie, and while he is investigating Burke's murder (Chris Macneil's directer/friend) he becomes fond of Father Damien Karras, making similar jokes and they plan to see a movie together. Father Dyer is the priest that holds Damien's hand while he dies, and was his closest friend. Through Damien's death, Kinderman and Dyer become close friends. So for Dyer to die that gruesomely and then for him to see Damien again, he is being psychologically mind-fucked by the demon. The exorcist book has a lot of dark humour that they left out of the original movie, and I guess Blatty wanted to keep in this movie. I love part 3, Brad Douriff is such a fucking good actor and I don't think he is given enough credit. No matter how big or small his role is, he fucking kills it.

There's also 2versions of the Exorcist Prequel. The first version the studio didn't like, so they hired a new Director & reshot the whole movie. Both versions are available. You ought to do a video on those movies & the history & controversy of them.

Entire tv show made about the weird dressed nun, it’s called “ The Flying Nun” I believe. From the 70’s or 80’s I never watched it, I’m born in 89, but I remember seeing a brief intro to the tv show as a kid, and I remembered it was in colour, so unless the colour was done later like they’ve done with some old movies and such, it had to be from at least the mid to late 70’s on, so I guess they might have stopped using them in the late 60’s, but they were clearly still satirized later on, (I believe the show was a comedy with a name like that) so it doesn’t shock me that you saw that in a movie you felt like was a sort of dark comedy! I think it was mostly a callback joke to that show or those times!

The back and forth between George C Scott and Brad Douriff are why I actually prefer this over the first.

It's an interesting take on the franchise especially with the addition of the Gemini killer being based upon the Zodiac. You can see Blatty really wanted to distance himself from the content that was The Exorcist and the disaster that the sequel was and ground the story Legion in real events. Also, and this is from the whole thing about Dahmer this year, he claimed in interviews that this was his favourite movie and he used to make his victims watch it before he killed them.
