Wealth and poverty are two sides of the same coin - two sides of the same story. Wealth is the ability to have access to resources, opportunities, and choices that improve life, while poverty is the lack of those same resources, opportunities, and choices. Wealth and poverty are determined by the context that individuals, families, and communities live in, and both are the result of complex systems of power, privilege, and oppression. This video explores these systems and the ways in which they lead to wealth and poverty for different individuals, communities, and societies.

Key moments
0:00 - Intro
0:01 - I'm going to talk about wealth and
0:13 - poverty wealth and poverty are very
0:18 - the world is ruled by these two forces
0:20 - wealth and poverty and they drive
0:25 - everything that happens in the world
0:28 - wealth does not include things like cars
1:10 - cost you money it's interesting that
1:12 - people see possessions of things like
1:15 - cars as manifestation of wealth wealth
1:20 - is not seen in cars because cars do not
1:23 - appreciate in value wealth in a larger
1:26 - sense includes things like Health happy
1:30 - marriage family life I know all of that
1:33 - is wealth but that's not what I'm
1:34 - talking about so
1:36 - when I'm talking about wealth I'm
1:38 - talking about having abundance of
1:41 - valuable possessions
1:44 - defends the rich money is a defense
1:49 - those who have money use it to defend
1:53 - themselves to secure their power and
1:57 - their position when you have no money
1:59 - you have no defense money is for defense
2:03 - It will defend your dignity and when you
2:07 - don't have it you may lose your dignity
2:13 - poverty so what is poverty poverty is a
2:16 - lack of material resources or money
2:19 - poverty can either be absolute or
2:22 - relative absolute poverty is when you
2:28 - needs of Life relative poverty is when
2:32 - you have met basic necessities but wish
2:42 - other words you go to a shop you see a
2:44 - shoe it will look good on your feet you
2:48 - want to buy it you see the price and you
2:51 - quietly put it back that is called
2:54 - relative poverty so when you desire
2:57 - something which is good for you but you
3:01 - cannot buy it you are not absolutely
3:04 - poor but relatively poor in relation to
3:08 - that thing you are poor in this world
3:11 - the wealthy are few the poor are in
3:16 - 65 people of the world's wealthiest
3:20 - people on half of the wealth of the
3:24 - world Africa's wealth
3:27 - 3.5 trillion dollars that's a lot of
3:31 - money the whole of Africa the wealth of
3:34 - four companies Apple Computers Google
3:39 - Amazon Facebook
3:41 - these four companies are richer than our
3:45 - continent most of them established in my
3:47 - life and for all of them established in
3:49 - my lifetime the oldest of those
3:51 - companies is Apple it was set up in
3:53 - 1975. four companies run the world so in
3:57 - this world wealth sets the agenda
4:01 - poverty fulfills the agenda there are
4:04 - people whose money determines who should
4:06 - govern a nation but they need those
4:08 - without money to ensure that their
4:10 - agenda comes to pass those who have
4:12 - money are a few the masses who have the
4:15 - vote have no money so those who have the
4:18 - money sets the agenda for who should be
4:23 - money finances research but they need
4:28 - research so the people with money pay
4:32 - scientists to conduct research and tell
4:35 - us what is true and what is false so one
4:43 - based on their research something you
4:48 - true and something all of us know
4:58 - world is not set by the poor it is set
5:10 - world credits as inventors of things are
5:19 - electricity this one invented telephone
5:26 - the first man to get to Mount Everest he
5:28 - was with a poor wise man the poor wise
5:34 - books it's his village he goes to Mount
5:42 - Come but when you read the history books
5:46 - Everest they will mention somebody
5:50 - man a Shepherd who knows the way but
5:56 - who are credited with great inventions
5:59 - in the world but the idea from poor wise
6:07 - whilst he was on his horse going to
6:13 - register somebody had taken a train to
6:18 - patent and he said I invented they said
6:21 - well it's already registered somebody
