Hydra main from way back with an important tip: Sniper perches are not for splatlings. Splatlings hang closer to the floor and aiming down results in hitting the floor unless you're denying yourself cover. Those are great for a few seconds while you secure an area, but you want a place where you can get back to your cover by walking when people harrass you with their subs.

One thing you didn't mention about Hydra, if you tap shot all the way up to 99% charge, your shots do 32 damage, and thus 4 shot, but if you do get fully charged, the damage goes up to 40, which is a 3 shot. So there is an important reason to full charge even if you don't need an entire charge worth of bullets.

It's also just a more efficient use of your time, overall. Hydra charges 2 seconds' worth of shots in the first 1.5 seconds of charging, then another 2 seconds' worth in the last half-second of charging. Sometimes you need to fire earlier to get the shots off in time, sure, but if you're just looking to provide paint, cover fire, and charge your special, you get so much more efficiency out of that last half-second of charging that it's worth finishing it.

Tip for Wave Breaker on Heavy: It's probably decently known, but look for raised ledges to place the wave breaker on! Wave Breaker has more downward reach than upward! On Museum for example, try placing it on your your/the enemy's plat, it will control all of it + a good chunk of mid.

As a splatling main, this was a hard watch. Gem was definitely out of his element here. Shooting the Big Bubbler's shield instead of the weakspot in the Hydra game and not utilizing the Ballpoint's painting mode in the final game. Just goes to show even good players will struggle with weapons they are not practiced with.

Everybody has their weak spots. Especially with weapons they never play. I still appreciate his dedication to try and help people out. I feel the same way watching most people try and use L3. Most people don't realize you can actually fire each round much fast if tapped with the correct rhythm. Each burst can come out almost instantly after the last with the right rhythm. But I always see people leave ages between bursts.

@@leftovernoise Even though I rarely play H3 (mostly in Salmon Run), a helpful tip for me was keeping in mind the rhythm of Imperial March. It's almost a perfect fit.

20:30 I think being partially insane is the average for a splatling player after a good bit of experience. I have played Hydra like it was a midline before purely because the enemy team either had much slower kill time/range than my partial charge shots, so I could afford being caught off guard, as simply just having a good ability to react and shoot them kept me alive lol Also as a word of advice to expand on crazy behavior, optimal gameplay 24/7 is not always optimal, sometimes reasonable unpredictability is good with a splatling at a charge, you can really cause some issues with a full charge from a flanking position!

This, a splatling can do things that chargers can't because they're not single shot weapons and don't have a massive line visible while charging, use the fact that you can get away with crazy plays to your advantage, hell, nautilus' gameplan is based on that kind of thing.

I've been waiting for this video since this series started. There's plenty of tip videos out there for splatlings, but none of them come anywhere close to being as informative as Gem. EDIT: I really have to thank Gem, Devy, and Aplo for this video. Seeing Gem play and get real-time corrections from the experts really opened my eyes to the simple things I was doing wrong. I have already seen an improvement in my play and I hope it keeps up!

one thing to note about hydra, which matters prolly more against objects.... or in salmon, is that the weapon is a FOUR SHOT like every single other splatling until it hits full charge, it then becomes a THREE SHOT, so if you aim to take down a object.... or boss salmonid as fast as possible, then a full charge is the way to go (also note: by full charge i mean the SECOND circle. charging up to first circle is max range, second circle is 3 shot.)

Tip for Splatlings when you get caught out: If you're running run speed up and you get backed up next to terrain with no ink, don't slowly squid through it, just run! The run speed with one or two mains is actually decently fast, it's way better to run on un-inked turf

Hi, as someone who mained Custom Hydra Splatling in Splatoon 1, that was the singular best kit in Splatoon history. Sprinkler (remember it only got nerfed in Splatoon 2, before which it painted as much ink as an Inkstrike [not one of the Triple ones, more like Booyah Bomb radius] even on flat ground) and Bubbler (the best Special in the game defined by its broken Specials: look down, back up again, now your team is invincible).

quick correction: "the second circle also increases range" wrong. the first circle increases the range, the second increases the firing duration and in some cases also damage per shot. for example the hydra goes from 4 shot to 3 shots to splat someone once fully charged.

A few things worth noting for ballpoint: You strafe super fast in short range mode. It’s about 1.2 speed, which is almost as fast as a carbon roller rolls. It’s also about as fast as a Mini with 3 pures of RSU. This makes it an incredible painter-too bad it has no special worth painting for… Its fire rate is actually faster in short range mode, and it fires faster than everything else in the game. BP will fire every 3 frames, while the next fastest are all every 4 frames. That actually makes its time to kill among the best in the game in short range mode, assuming everything hits.

Gem not using the short range mode of the Ballpoint hurts as a Ballpoint main, he could have won so many fights since the paint is WAYYY better and helps win close range fights more

The description for Ballpoint reverting to “Short Range Mode” from “Long Range Mode” is incorrect - it is NOT when you get to full charge again, and you can see this in the video if you look closely. It reverts back anytime you either recharge 1/4 or 1/3 ring at a single time during a sustained shooting period (I forget the amount exactly)

It’ll change back to short range at exactly the charge level it first switched to long range. Off a full charge, that’s at about the halfway point of the 2nd ring. It’ll also change back to short range if you have no charge for over a second.

Something that ppl should know about hydra that I don't think was mentioned in the vid is that hydra actually gets a damage boost when at full charge (2 rings). It goes from i think 32 to 40 damage which is quite significant

37:48 is the reason why I run 2 main Ink Resistance and at least 1 main Run Speed. Fluid movement in enemy ink help a lot. Also as backline the enemy shot at you to make you move and ink all over your spot, you don't need to use your charge, you don't have to move and you can charge the Splatling without haste. But you need at least some sub Ink Resistance or every drop of enemy ink will stop you.

Splatoon 1 Hydra kits were vHydra: Splat Bomb and Echolocator. While cHydra had Sprinkler and Bubbler. The Kraken was false. However, these kits still seem pretty good. I'm not too sure how well the weapon stood in that game, though

Nautilus is my go to splatling, but I’ve been recently picking up the Ballpoint. It’s kinda hard to get the hang of at first. Is running IA good for it? Im running 1 main, 3 subs of IA. I heard it’s good for the long range mode while you’re jumping.

I had to stop during the heavy splatling game. This is bad advice. You should have let Devvy just talk instead of playing bad. What tier are you to run into enemy ink with two players chasing you to plant a wave breaker? This is beneath you.

He was running away after pushing up too far and had no other direction to go. The wave breaker was intended to be used as cover and a distraction to hopefully at least 1 for 1 instead of pure feeding. Very unfortunate position to be in but absolutely not what you think happened.

As a splatling he can’t just shoot them so the wave break is literally necessary to do that in the first place. The series of errors needed to get to that situation is inexcusable for a player of Gem's level, and I'm shocked that another human being feels the need to create a list of excuses for someone else's bad plays. Especially when Gem expects honest reflection in order to better oneself. It is a bad play. I will call it a bad play. Any "buts" or "howevers" are useless to anyone with any interest in growth.
