While I know that even fully armored cavalry is nearly obsolete, I think there may still be a niche for well armed armored cars such as this. A small, highly maneuverable vehicle with the ability to be air dropped or similar, yet has the ability to carry sufficient weaponry to at least disable medium or heavy armor, is still an important tool. But with the addition of the modern drone swarm I fear the days of armored conflict is coming to an end. Prior to WWI there were a couple small scale conflicts that ushered in many of the tech used later in The Great War, most nations didn’t pay attention. Similar events happened just before WWII. The current Azerbaijan conflict is very telling of what is probably going to happen in a short while. But, I still believe that a decent armored car is worth it.

Another very good video on this channel. I served in the 80's in Chad and the Central African Republic, as both gunner and later commander on AML60 and AML90. It's not easy to find many negative points about the AML. However like most such vehicles (EBR, AML, ERC, and AMX10RC) they are not easy to drive and need competent drivers. The French AML has a 4 cylinder, opposed, air cooled (much like a big ww-beetle) engine. Loved for its simplicity and reliability, but it needs a well trained operator. A heavy steering and a tricky clutch system adds on to the job :-) The turret on the other hand is a breeze, with a very precise 90mm that is simply fantastic.

Note the Eland is more than a copy of the AML. It has been upgraded considerably. In particular, it uses a water-cooled engine, rather than the air-coold model used by the AML
@Ghost631233 жыл бұрын
Correct. The Eland had a longer front end to accomodate the larger South Africans, and a 2.5l Chevrolet Ironduke watercooled engine. I heard somewhere that the turret was lifted to accomodate the South Africans. We are big bastards 😊. My brother is 1.9m tall, and he was a crew commander on a Eland. There were not enough short people to be trained as crew by the Armoured Corps. We called the Eland a Noddy car as a nickname, after the funny cars found in the Noddy books

@xjack23123 жыл бұрын
Nah, the RARDEN on the Scimitar was a real hard-hitter and outraged the AML 90mm by a good 500 meters, they could have sat back and picked of the AMLs if it had come to a fight, although the infantry MILANs would probably have got first go! The Blues & Royals were keen to get to grips with the Argentine AMLs but never got the chance, so not sure where that story comes from about them fighting each other. The AMLs were all kept around Stanley as they couldn't manage the boggy terrain like the Scorpions and Scimitars.

@charlesstoeng91663 жыл бұрын
Well... As an old AML90 commander, I would have been very cautious, if facing Scorpions or Scimitars. They both have guns that would instantly reduce me to a pile of smoking junk. In addition they have a better of road capability. Actually they are made for different types of warfare, to different specifications, for different theatres. The event in Falklands was indeed an unlikely situation. The AML survives on its simplicity (range and reliability) together with excellent armament. The rest is down to skills
