American soldiers in that era that fought in the Philippines also carried more than enough ammunition besides the basic 100 rounds on their cartridge belts.They would carry their ammo resupply inside their haversack with their rations along with two socks filled with rounds slung around their necks suspended in the front.The Regulars did this with 30-40 Krag ammo and the National Guard with their 45-70 GOVT.Soldiers in combat soldiers knew that resupply will be difficult if you have a terrible fight taking a town or an ambush down a jungle trail.They stayed very close to each other for mutual supporting fire,losing a rifleman meant being overrun or being outflanked.

I remember my grandfather told about the story of his father (My greatgrandfather) is one of the insurgents who fought the americans in the island of Bohol during the year 1902 to 1904. The Boholano insurgents established many successful ambushes, but inflict minimal or few casualties to american soldiers, because of lack of firepower and actual weapons, mostly armed with Bolo's and knifes only, they have to do the ambush as quickly as posible and run towards mountains jungle and hide. But sadly, as the retaliation by american soldiers the civilians are always have to pay the price of thier actions. In one occasion a villlage of 400 people was being wiped out and thier houses was burned down into ashes, livestocks was slaughtered. At the end of the day all 400 Boholanos, male, female, young and adult including infants was killed exept for one survivor who account the story. The darkdays of our history in the face of colonialism.

As a Filipino this intrigued me a lot, when you say "jungle environment" I'm guessing you are referring to Philippine jungles, in which case it should me much more dense and the forest floor would usually be covered in plants. Of course you're not in the Philippines. Also fun fact about the how the American - Filipino war started, a Filipino soldier was walking along a road with a few rifles slung on his back, he was walking towards an American checkpoint. The American soldiers shouted "halt!", but because many soldiers were uneducated (officers had at least basic education) much like the rest of the populace, the Filipino soldier replied with "Halto!". As he thought that it was a form of greeting between Americans, sad to say, as the Filipino soldier drew closer, the Americans shot him without further warning, the Filipino died without knowing what he had done wrong, and the Filipinos then went on to fight off another invader that was superior to them in all aspects, America, just as they had done with the Spaniards not too long ago. On a side note, if you wanted to get an authentic bolo knife there are many here in the Philippines, sometimes in the province, but if you find the right guy in the city, you can get yourself either a perfect reproduction, or a well preserved fully functional antique, but finding a regular modern one that doesn't even differ in the slightest won't be too hard as they are still heavily used today in the Philippines as agricultural tools, basic self defence weapons, home defence weapons, and a multitude of other forest engineering tools. Overall I loved the video as always, looking forward to see more!

@jeffyoung60 Жыл бұрын
Springfield needed to shorten that Allin trapdoor rifle by about six inches. It was too long and unwieldy. The loss of six inches of barrel would have meant only a slight loss in velocity and range. Army bayonets were still too long at 16 inches. The concept of a short bayonet would not take hold until mid-way into the Second World War when the U.S. Army shortened the bayonet to 10 inches for the M1 Garand and the M1 Springfield bolt action. The U.S. Army would go as low as 7 inches for a M16A1 bayonet in Vietnam. The host's carbine has a defective ejector. When lifting up the breechlock a spring-mounted ejector pin should have ejected the empty brass clear out of the chamber. Instead the host had to reach in and sweep out the empty brass, something he shouldn't have had to do. The U.S. Army quickly learned to its dismay that the German Mauser "Spanish Hornet" 7mm x 57mm bolt action used by the Spanish clearly outmatched the American Krag Jorgensen in just about every way. Fortunately for the U.S. Army, it had not yet invested heavily into millions of Krag Jorgensen bolt actions. In an act of supreme courage, the U.S. Army quickly dropped the Krag Jorgensen and developed the superlative M1 Springfield bolt action, based upon the Mauser. The U.S. Government had to pay royalties to Mauser for the use of its bolt action design and clipper strips. During WW1 the U.S. Government seized the Mauser patent and stopped paying royalties. After WW1, Mauser sued the U.S. Government in International Court in Hague, Belgium. The Hague ruled against the American government. The Americans returned the patent, albeit without financial penalty. But the U.S. did have to pay Mauser back royalties for the use of its bolt action and clipper strips from during the Great War, which it did.

Enjoyed what I saw and look forward to watching more. Keep up the good work. Technical needs attention. 1. Poor sound In focus on visuals sound tends to be pushed back but sound matters, a lot. If sound is flawed it distracts from the visual Solutions a. Stand closer to mike, use wider shots as fillers b. Invest in best shotgun mike you can (directional) c. Invest in radio lapel mike (best result - always check playback in situ as batteries die and a pain in the proverbial to find out after leaving location d. Also value in ‘Dead Barron’s’ suggestion, add clear audio in post production. 2. Combat situational awareness 3. In simulating fire positions, be aware range work and live deployment differ due to the disturbing habit of the enemy enthusiastically firing back. Where a kneeling fire position is assumed on top of the mound to take aimed shots time spent highly visible on the mound reloading having betrayed your position and evil intent by the gun smoke from your weapon discharge will encourage the opposing force to make their dissatisfaction very plain and do so very quickly by taking shots at you. The negative emotion this causes will quickly convince you to assume a less visible target posture, at least whilst you reload. At the very least it encourages you to duck down. This disturbs the rhythm of your range drill training but tends to extend your life span. From a filming point of view situational awareness adds visual drama, the essence of good story telling 4. Framing • Make wider use of different framed shots, the variety enhances and holds interest • Adds to workload but richly rewards in the edit • Add close ups, again, it adds to workload (especially when solo) but well worth it My commentary is based on interest in military history, time in the forces and later extensive time frame as a combat cameraman (Afghanistan from 1980, Lebanon, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Bosnia, Croatia, Cambodia, Liberia, which threw up all the working solo issues and the advisability of ducking). All best, Ken

What about the side arms? That insurgency was the catalyst for the U. S. uping the power of their side arms from .38 to .45. It was due to a certain tribe that were like berserkers. They used mind altering substances before battle and wrapped themselves very tightly in bandage like fabric to slow bleeding once they took on wounds. Those tribesmen could take an entire cylinder of .38 while charging the line and kill several men before they'd succumb to their injuries. So in comes the .45 caliber side arm with the much needed extra stopping power.

I would like to correct you on your history. To us Filipinos, we call this conflict the Filipino-American war. Prior to the US buying the Philippines from Spain, we have already declared our independence on 12th June 1898. US bought something that Spain have no right to sell because it was already independent. The treaty of Paris was on October 28, 1898, 4 months after Aguinaldo declared our independence. It was not insurrection but a war of independence from one colonizer to another. We already have a working government when the conflict between the US and the Philippine troops began. These are facts and I hope you respect the views of us Filipinos and don't call us insurrectors.
