We all know that the Claymore (of either type) was a classic weapon of the Highlanders. And even today Scottish soldiers will often wear the Highland dirk on the belt. Lots of gents wear the Sgian Dubh in their kilt hose (sock). When is it appropriate to wear weapons with a your kilt?
What goes with a kilt? What doesn't?
What weapons did Scottish warriors use? And what Scottish weapons are worn today by regular people?

I've found it customary in my years of Highland Games that a Sgian Dubh and Dirk are common place. The carrying of a Axe or sword isn't unheard of but not quite as common. The Sgian Dubh is the most common but the Dirk holds far more tradition culturally. From declaring fealty to cutting of the Haggis, the Dirk takes the stage.

@M. S. they are specifically named in the law here too. Do some research though and carefully read the law and their definitions as a Scottish dirk does not meet the definition of most because it is only single edged and most of the states describe it as double edged like a dagger. Also, here in Hawaii there is no clear definition but the law specifically states that it is illegal to carry a fork or dagger CONCEALED. I have to point out that little word that the police overlook in the law all the time to them.
@WH6FQE

@M. S. most of the states copy and paste the law wordings from other states, which is why Scottish dirks are actually legal in most even when they may have intended for them bot to be

Thanks for this video. People also need to know the weapons laws of where they are living. I have known two people who claim to have had their sgians seized by police in the Chicagoland area because it is considered a 'concealed weapon' there. There usually is not a problem if you are participating in an event in Chicago, but remove it from your hose before you go into a convenience store. Anyhow, check local laws and regs before you go out armed in public (or wear a plastic sgian).

When I was at Dragon Con last year, I was cosplaying Killian Jones aka OUAT's Captain Hook. My plastic hook was peace-tied with a little yellow zip-tie around it to go into the walk of fame ballroom. After I left the room, I just slid the tie off the end because it wasn't actually secured on in any way.

I carry an EDC on my belt always. Since I'm crippled up, I use a Sheppards axe for my cane. No one has ever questioned it. It does have a small sheath covering the blade which acts as a pad for my hand. Court house, or air port, would not be wise.

A couple of years back I wore a dirk in the centre of Edinburgh, even went through security in the conference centre without being challenged. I will add that the dirk had a plastic safety blade, but from the outside nobody knew that and I never had to draw it to prove that as I was never challenged. I have also worn full highland outfit to the House of Lords, where I substituted the sgian dhu, for a sgian brew, erring on the side of caution again.

I’ve been to zero Highland Games where I’ve had to peace tie my Dirk or any of my blades, and there are tons of non-reenactors that wear Dirks and carry swords at the games. It’s the Renaissance fairs that usually require you to piece tie, unless you’re in a reenactment/renaissance section of a Scottish games. I’ve been going to the games since 1999 in liberal California. If you’re going to wear a kilt, wear a Dirk. That’s my philosophy anyway

I sometimes wear a basket-kilted backsword to the local ren faire just for fun. It does have to be tied into the scabbard but as mentioned, it's just a prop. Otherwise, when I wear a casual kilt I clip my folding knife into the pocket just like I do in my trousers. With a traditional kilt I wear a skein dubh for more formal events. In a traditional kilt for casual wear I carry my usual folding knife in the top of my hose just like a skein dubh. I used to have a lovely stag horn-handled small skinning knife which looked great but I lost it long ago. :-( Most skein dubhs aren't made with actual use in mind and their blades are flimsy and/or made of poor steel. I use my knife for all sorts of things every day and if I'm going to carry one at all, I want it to be useful.

Apparently it greatly depends on social context. Nobody bats an eye at a dirk worn with a kilt at any of the Highland Games, Burn's Nights, Scottish country dances, or SCA events I've been attending in Virginia, North Carolina, etc. the last twenty years. The only time it's ever even come up was for Kirkins at Colonial Presbyterian, and even then most of us continue to wear them for the Sunday morning service every year.

Cutlery wise I have an event to run in August.... I shall be mainly sporting a Basket hilted broadsword, supported by a full sized dirk. Both will be peace bonded for the sensitivities of the sheepish amongst us. Dress wise, the great kilt is the option for the Saturday, but maybe a modern kilt for the Friday and Sunday. For daily wear I wouldn't wear the sword or dirk because they aren't needed these days.

Kilts aren't needed either but the dirk was considered to have major cultural importance to the Highlanders in the same way that Sikhs have a kirpan. If I'm going to be drinking I never even take a sgian dubh let alone wear it. This is not because I would think that I cannot control myself, I am a vet and carried more dangerous weapons in my time. In the UK our attitude to being armed is completely different to the US. It is illegal here to have a blade bigger than 4 inches (10cm) in public and guns are a no no, even to own one the hurdles are so high. For men if you cannot manage more than 4 inches you definitely do not want to show it in public.

Well I know for mine they do piece tie it but I prefer to wear mine to Ren Fest. Officers will usually only partially piece tie mine (I guess they get a sense that I don't care to remove my blades from scabbards anyway plus they all are not sharp, of which they would be correct.) Now for the highland games, because it's more for the modern day, I don't care to wear any of my period blades. Usually just a simple pocket knife in case I need to open a product bag that might be tricky.

Very interesting topic. I am one of those people that is always carrying - pistol. I am a concealed carry permit holder. I get what he is saying as to wanting to be authentic with a dirk or sword, etc. and he comes up with some great point of views. However, with someone like me, where I think I have the right (need the right) to protect my family and myself at all times, I would find a way to carry (concealed of course) my pistol. Now, I am not going to break the law and carry unlawfully, but I would not mind being able to carry concealed. Is there a way to make a concealed compartment in your kilt?
@USAKiltsOfficial

Concealed compartment IN the kilt (as in sewn in pocket for a pistol) - For weight purposes, not really as it would affect the way the kilt hangs. The options which have been discussed before are: 1. IWB Kidney Carry / Appendix / Small of back - Only works with a sweater / sweatshirt since shirts are typically tucked inside of the kilt 2. Shoulder Holster - Only works with a jacket 3. Thigh holster worn under the kilt 4. Pistol inside the sporran (which really limits capacity of the sporran to carry things like keys, wallet, phone)

So serious question, I live in Ohio, I spent 20 years in the military, I choose to exercise my second amendment rights as Ohio has interpreted them. This means constitutional carry or permit less concealed carry. I’m transitioning to wearing a kilt everyday. What are some of the recommended ways of carrying concealed in a kilt, or are there any? Obviously some kilts lend themselves better to this, like utility kilts, but I’m more of a fan of the traditional kilts you guys offer.

@itsapittie
@itsapittie 3 жыл бұрын
The same as with trousers with one caveat. You still need an appropriate holster and a cover garment like a jacket or a long shirt but if you're wearing a traditional kilt, the belt is worn too high to be practical as a support for your holster. You could use a shoulder holster or even (I suppose) wear a belt at the level of your hips but that would look pretty goofy. If I'm going to carry a handgun, I usually wear a modern kilt with pockets and belt loops which sits down on my hips in the same position as my jeans. I wear a 2.5" wide double-thickness leather belt which looks very much like it belongs on a kilt and supports my holster and pistol nicely. Depending upon the weather, I then add a jacket or a vest. When I'm wearing a traditional kilt I usually put a small pistol in my jacket pocket if I carry one at all. I have one small enough and flat enough to fit in a sporran but I haven't done that (yet).

I now play bass for a Baltimore MD. based Irish band with saffron kilts etc. known as Na Fianna. Most carry dirks and stocking knives .

@@bobbieschke599 I play with the Royal Canadian mounted police pipes, drums and dancers. We don’t allow people to wear a dirk because it’s not issued by the band. We wear our own Sgian Dubh but it’s the only piece of kit that has any variance. We don’t allow water bottles or cell phone holders etc. We take the uniformity part of a uniform seriously. The Scottish regiments up here have dirks for their full no1 dress, but they belong to the band and individuals are not permitted to wear their own. I have performed along side the Scots Guards and other household division bands in the UK, and they are the same. In Canada and from what I have seen the UK the no1 dress for civilian bands is rare and dirks are just as rare. I think my point stands, maybe not the bad band part, but bands don’t issue dirks very often today.

Same same, military balls. If you're the adjutant or part of the sword detail, you wear your sword for that and then dump it as soon as is humanly possible.

At Ren Faire I have stopped wearing swords and axes all together they're more problem than what they're worth I've started to just wear a knife a pouch and a Tankard on my hip. During certain periods of History normal person doing day to day activities wouldn't really CONSTANTLY carry around a sword all that much and you might have a belt axe if you needed it for the work you did

If I am going to an event that allows these things, I will wear either my blunderbuss and my basket-hilt claymore or my Zweihander alone. I get the most comments from the Zweihander...

Uhhh... the same way you carry with jeans or whatever? Gun belt (I wear a Kore Essentials 1.75" Garrison Range Belt) instead of a kilt belt, either an IWB or OWB holster, and a loose shirt to conceal the firearm. 🤷‍♂

I carry my Ruger LC9 or LCR 357 in my sporran. And my local festival doesn't care. They are great when it comes to weapons. No real security.

There’s also the trouble of legality. Dirks are still listed on law books across the US as illegal weapons. One reason is bigotry.

Who's this guy giving advice on what arms someone is going to wear ? I often carry a dirk as a EDC he might live somewhere that's scared of bigger weapons, so they made laws against there carry, ext. But that's up to you to understand and know what those laws are where you live. If you're afraid to carry weapons and don't want to understand their use, don't have them, but don't give others the same advise. The more people who are not used to them see them and understand them the more we can get rid of ridiculous anticonstitutional laws that plague the USA simply out of fear.

From a real weapons standpoint, I agree. First, you _must_ know your local laws. Secondly _if_ you carry a weapon - be it a knife or a firearm - you'd pretty much carry it the same way you do with pants/shorts/jeans. I think Rocky and Erik are really addressing the "traditional medieval weapons" thing - swords, dirks, maces, flails (... is that a trebuchet in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?😁) - and I feel their advice on simply _not_ carrying them is spot on. They are just too much trouble (and cause too much trouble) to be any real fun carrying around at a Ren Fair, Highland Games or Celtic Festival. 🤷‍♂
