There needs to be more videos like this out there warning people of the dangers of filters. I bought a German m65 today for a convention and I specifically searched and bought a mask without a filter because I wouldn't trust any filter that hasn't been CONFIRMED not to have asbestos or other harmful chemicals
@Weaponsandstuff937 жыл бұрын
That's the safer way to do it, you can always find a list of confirmed safe filters, then just use those. Most lists are generally. Confirmed safe, questionable and then confirmed hazardous.

Israeli filters are 40mm NATO, The GP-5 is 40mm GOST, it may appear to fit fine but as the screw thread is different you will always be inhaling some air from around the filter, it's fine as a costume mask but not good enough to actually use in a contaminated environment.

Is the filter used for the mask swiss SM 74 safe to use? The one with a red/orange halo on top
@Weaponsandstuff936 жыл бұрын
Depends on the filter, there are several Swiss filters, the WW2 and post WW2 filters contained asbestos, if you use a Swiss filter make sure it's the more modern design one that looks like a conventional 40mm filter, it still has the orange band around it.
@alex8888016 жыл бұрын
@@Weaponsandstuff93 do you have a link where can I find that modern design? So the 40mm conventional is the safety one? Thank you for your quick response 👍

I'm no expert on gas masks but own some. It's scary how little I knew about the things that I could have been unknowingly putting my health at risk. After researching I own a Czech CM3 gas mask with unused pristine sealed matching filter. I have been breathing with it on recently for hours clearing up nasty old loft insulation for a semi-loft conversion. Luckily my research has concluded that there is no asbestos in these canisters but there is chromium which if I am correct can cause cancer of the lung in repeated exposure. So I won't get asbestosis but if the chromium got through I could be at higher risk of cancer of the lung. Please respond, are my findings correct? Thanks for enlightening me. I was never particularly interested in the gas masks but watch most of your other vids but when I saw the word asbestos I became concerned! :-)
@Weaponsandstuff937 жыл бұрын
I'd actually imagine the CM-3 filter would contain asbestos because it's a copy internally of the Soviet filters. Chromium, however, is not actually a risk, I did a video on it recently. In the small amounts found in gas mask filters, you would have to be inhaling it for hours a day for many years to get a 1% increase in the risk of lung cancer, Chromium is still used today because it extends the life of filters significantly. If your filter was in good condition you should be perfectly fine, asbestos can only be inhaled when the filter breaks down internally.
@bladesmilitariauk50137 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info. What would it take for the asbestos filter to break down internally & would I be able to see it from outside the canister? Mine is dated10.1975 2285 OTK MOF. The research I looked into on yahooanswers said CM-3 Government issue filter contains: Paper (I think treated?), A mesh divider (to keep the Carbon and Paper apart), Activated Carbon, and another mesh (to keep you from inhaling dust). It said 50-60 version not safe but 70s & onwards are. Is they anyway of safely finding out whether the canister does 100% contain asbestos & whether the filters internal condition is fine? It looks pristine from outside but if I have been breathing is asbestos I'll have to get a lung biopsy to see if I have any asbestos fibres in my lungs & sue the eBay business seller for not warning me about the asbestos. eBay makes it clear that it is against their rules to sell asbestos containing products & it is also illegal to sell anything containing asbestos without warning them that it does & if they didn't know it still their fault legally! I'm very concerned this needs investigating! Any seller should know what they are selling & putting warnings on all canisters tell them not to use them! If I'm going to get asbestosis in 20 years I'd rather know for sure than just assume that I should be perfectly fine & if necessary hold them accountable whilst I can! You should consider going to the media with this you are obviously very knowledgeable on the subject & if there are filters in bad internal but seemingly good external condition & hundreds of people are breathing in asbestos unknowingly then this needs maximum publicity & put in the newspapers! This is a scandal!
@Weaponsandstuff937 жыл бұрын
Filter break down occurs slowly over time, so a filter from the 60s is less likely to be safe than one from the 70s, then an 80s, the filter is safer still etc. If the filter has been thrown around and damaged it's more likely to be leaking. It will vary a bit from filter to filter regarding the quality of glues and metal housing etc. That's the exact same thing as what they said about GP-5 filters, just paper, cotton, and carbon turns out it has around 10% asbestos mixed in with the contents to aid filtration. To find out if the filter is leaking, shake it upside down over a sheet of paper, if anything comes out on the paper then the filter is internally leaking. To test it properly you'll have to find a local asbestos lab and then fork out around £100 for a filter test. eBay does not bother enforcing the rules around asbestos, they were meant to put a stop to the sale of WW2 masks because of asbestos filters, there were a lot of arguments around the destruction and banning of WW2 masks and most authorities folded because it was causing such a shitstorm, to make my opinion perfectly clear, as a collector who buys masks that may not be safe, I wish for them still to be traded but with clear warnings put in place, not to breathe through these old masks/filters. If you do a google search there has already been a media frenzy over asbestos in masks and it died down very quickly as mentioned above because the idea of banning sales or even destroying WW2 antiques was considered ludicrous. An American asbestos help group ran an article on GP-5 filters but most people put their fingers in their ears and ignored it. www.mesothelioma.com/news/2013/10/popular-military-surplus-gas-mask-used-for-halloween-contains-deadly-asbestos.htm So as mentioned, collectors like myself do not want it to be made harder for us to collect these masks, if everyone issued a warning when they sold them, not to use the filters then it would be fine. There are already people sadly after trying to convince I have had to start blocking who still insist on using GP-5 filters, I'm not going to allow anyone to potentially tell children that dangerous mask filters are safe to use because they don't want to spend more money and buy a safe filter.

@Weaponsandstuff937 жыл бұрын
How do you know it's not original? The serial numbers indicate either a filter made in 1979 or 1984, either would make the filter hazardous to use. Personally, unless you are totally sure it's a fake filter with nothing inside it, I would not use it, the risks outweigh the gains.
