Carnivorans are placental mammals of the order Carnivora, they are found everywhere in the world, this makes carnivorans the most globally distributed of any mammalian order, carnivorans are divided into two suborders, Caniformia - the dog-like carnivorans and Feliformia - the cat-like carnivorans, there are many differences between these two suborders, the biggest difference is the auditory bullae, the auditory bullae of caniforms are single-chambered or partially divided composed of just one bone, while the auditory bullae of feliforms are double-chambered composed of two bones that are also joined by a septum, there are two-hundred and seven extant caniform species classified under fifteen extant families, the fifteen extant families of caniforms are Canidae (Dogs), Ursidae (Bears), Ailuropodidae (Giant Panda), Phocidae (Seals), Cystophoridae (Hooded Seal and Elephant Seals), Otariidae (Sea Lions and Fur Seals), Odobenidae (Walrus), Mephitidae (Skunks and Stink Badgers), Procyonidae (Raccoons and Bassarisks), Ailuridae (Red Panda), Nasuidae (Coatis, Olingos, Olinguito, and Kinkajou), Melidae (Badgers), Mustelidae (Weasels, Ferrets, and Minks), Lutridae (Otters), and Ictonychidae (Zorillas, Muishund, Shulang, Huro, Grisons, Wolverine, Tayra, Martens, and Fisher), while there are one-hundred and thirty-seven extant feliform species classified under ten extant families, the ten extant families of feliforms are Felidae (Cats), Protelidae (Aardwolf), Hyaenidae (Hyenas), Nandiniidae (African Palm Civet), Prionodontidae (Linsangs), Poianidae (Oyans), Genettidae (Genets), Viverridae (Civets), Herpestidae (Mongooses), and Eupleridae (Malagasy Carnivorans), that makes a total of three-hundred and forty-four extant species and twenty-five extant families, both suborders are split into a total of four infraorders, with the two infraorders of caniforms being Cynopsia (meaning "dog-shaped faced ones" in latin) and Galopsia (meaning "weasel-shaped faced ones" in latin) and the two infraorders of feliforms being Aeluropsia (meaning "cat-shaped faced ones" in latin) and Crocutopsia (meaning "hyena-shaped faced ones" in latin), these four infraorders defined mostly by body plan, the infraorder Cynopsia consists of seven extant families within four superfamilies and two parvorders, the two parvorders within the infraorder Cynopsia are Eufissipedia (meaning "truly split-footed ones" in latin) and Pinnipedia (meaning "merged-footed ones" in latin), eufissipeds (parvorder Eufissipedia) consist of two superfamilies being Canoidea, to which the dogs (family Canidae) are the sole extant family and Ursoidea, which contains the bears (family Ursidae) and the giant panda and its fossil relatives (family Ailuropodidae), while pinnipeds (parvorder Pinnipedia) consist of two superfamilies being Phocoidea, which contains the seals (family Phocidae) and the hooded seal and elephant seals (family Cystophoridae) and Otarioidea, which contains the sea lions and fur seals (family Otariidae) and the walrus and its fossil relatives (family Odobenidae), the infraorder Galopsia contains a total eight extant families within two superfamilies of two monotypic parvorders, the two parvorders within the infraorder Galopsia are Mesopalmata and Parapalmata, the sole extant taxon of the parvorder Mesopalmata is the superfamily Procyonoidea, which contains four families, which are the skunks and stink badgers (family Mephitidae), raccoons and bassarisks (family Procyonidae), red panda and its fossil relatives (family Ailuridae), and coatis, olingos, olinguito, and kinkajou (family Nasuidae), while the sole extant taxon of the parvorder Parapalmata is the superfamily Musteloidea, which also contains four families, which are the badgers (family Melidae), weasels, ferrets, and minks (family Mustelidae), otters (family Lutridae), and zorillas, muishund, shulang, huro, grisons, wolverine, tayra, martens, and fisher (family Ictonychidae), cats (family Felidae) are the sole extant family of both the superfamily Feloidea and the infraorder Aeluropsia, and the infraorder Crocutopsia contains all extant feliforms other than cats, Crocutopsia is made of nine extant families within two superfamilies, the two extant superfamilies within Crocutopsia are Hyaenoidea, which contains two extant families being the aardwolf and its fossil relatives (family Protelidae) and hyenas (family Hyaenidae) and Viverroidea, which is the largest and most diverse superfamily of extant carnivorans and contains seven extant families being the african palm civet and its fossil relatives (family Nandiniidae), linsangs (family Prionodontidae), oyans (family Poianidae), genets (family Genettidae), civets (family Viverridae), mongooses (family Herpestidae), and malagasy carnivorans (family Eupleridae).
