Weather, Lightning Storms & Sailing the MOST FEARED CAPES of South Africa!(Patrick Childress #65)

RVing Life Now - Not Sailing Brick House!

4 жыл бұрын

Sailing around the world on our sailboat "Brick House", sailing around Cape Aghullas and the Cape of Good Hope, of South Africa, was certainly the sailing passage that Rebecca had feared the most during our circumnavigation. Very bad weather conditions and unpredictable weather make sailing around the 2 Capes of South Africa, very intimidating for even experienced sailors. We sailed through every kind of weather from East London to Hout Bay, just short of Cape Town, but luckily using Predictwind Offshore on our Raymarine Axiom Pro and the Iridium GO, we MOSTLY knew when stormy weather at sea was approaching, from wind and squalls, to waves and currents.
We sailed in the worst electrical lightning storm we have ever been in...and we had some very nice fair weather sailing too. Predictwind on the chartplotter with the Iridium GO really makes getting weather forecasts at sea so much easier now. Radar also helped with seeing bad weather and squalls approaching. Patrick didn’t mention it, but the CAPE forecast on PredictWind even warned of high squall activity for one night sailing around the Cape of Good Hope. Being able to get weather at sea every 12 hours, certainly is the reason we felt comfortable sailing this entire coast in one go, rather than making many stops To seek shelter from the wind and waves. Being able to get weather reports at sea with Predictwind Offshore on the Raymarine chartploter certainly made all the difference!!!
Patrick gives a few sailing tips while Sailing the coast of Africa, in good weather, and in bad weather, upwind and downwind. This episode is like a "how to sail" video, but for experienced sailors who want to cross oceans, and round the great capes!
Here is our Predictwind Affiliate Link for a free or paid version of Predictwind.
www.predictwind.com/?ref=rebeccachildress
Here is our chartplotter, which s our Amazon Affiliate link: amzn.to/2yGflBe
And here is the best place to get an Iridium GO with an antenna good for a sailboat (Marine Package). Learn weather forecasting, one step at a time...we make no commission from the hardware purchased at Predictwind, but I feel strongly enough to purchase it directly from Precitwind is better than supplying you with an Amazon link where I would make a few dollars from your purchase, but you wouldn’t be as happy in the end with.

Dear Rebecca, there was no Patrick or BrickHouse without Rebecca, you should continue posting here, this channel is you as well as Patrick. I think Patrick saw you as the wind in his sails and the standing rigging that he flew upon. He got this channel and the yacht ready for you. Sail on Rebecca, you’ll find the right bearing.

I had decided not to come back here until Patrick's return. I had decided he was coming back. Just time. I am sitting silent in a room. I am so shocked and so sorry. He never knew me but I felt that I knew him... and I liked him. He fitted me. Though he was my age Patrick reminded me of my dad. Generous to Rebecca and everyone regardless of who they were, tight as scrooge to himself. Always making do and repairing and doing that so well. My father was an ordinary uneducated but principled Irishman referred to by those who knew him as "The gentleman" because of his polite kindness. I think of Patrick in that exact same way. He was there with you. No doubt at all. Thank God you got there to be with him and to help him let go his line. We're all still here.

He was genuinely grateful for you looking out for him and yourself Rebecca. All my Kindest thoughts Rebecca. Bill

@@harryweyer2174 Hello Harry. From a low social position (but respectable) I did well in my career and became comfortable. I did that from the shoulders he lifted me up onto. So that I could reach further than he could even see. Although I made more money than he could, I could never be a finer or better man than he was. He gave me something to aspire to that was not material. I will aspire, but don't expect to get anywhere near. Patrick probably could though.

Hi Patrick, yes, experienced sailors won't be offended as they understand there can be three ways of doing something right, and it comes down to personal preferences based on ones own experiences. On other peoples videos, I have gotten into it with some viewers about harnesses and tethers. With their limited sailing experience they are now out to educate the world on proper procedures.. I hope you are keeping well and healthy!

@@RVLifeNOW That's right Patrick . My ex-navy friend told me that this was explained to him on day one by his commanding officer. "There are 3 ways to do what I just told you to do. The Navy's way, the right way and MY way. Now get to it". You'll be reading and responding to this soon all cosseted and "beck and called" in a ward bed. Remember one thing. While you were away No. 1 acted up in the role as Skipper, so for the duration....DO AS YOU ARE TOLD! Rebecca's way!

So sorry to hear of Patrick passing Rebecca, sending you hugs. I found this little poem that I thought Patrick would have liked. When I am gone, release me, let me go. I have so many things to see and do, You mustn't tie yourself to me with too many tears, But be thankful we had so many good years. I gave you my love, and you can only guess How much you've given me in happiness. I thank you for the love that you have shown, But now it is time I traveled on alone. So grieve for me a while, if grieve you must, Then let your grief be comforted by trust. It is only for a while that we must part, So treasure the memories within your heart. I won't be far away for life goes on. And if you need me, call and I will come. Though you can't see or touch me, I will be near. And if you listen with your heart, you'll hear, All my love around you soft and clear. And then, when you come this way alone, I'll greet you with a smile and a 'Welcome Home'.

Very rare for us to use a harness, for the very reasons you mentioned. But essential to be fully aware of the conditions, watch each wave so you know how the boat will respond, keep centre of gravity low, and boom doubly secured so that it cannot sweep you off the deck in an accidental jibe.
@RVLifeNOW
@RVLifeNOW 4 жыл бұрын
Yes...I guess a lot of cruisers do it this way, without a harness most of the time. After 12 years of offshore passages and coastal sailing, I still can’t used to it. I don’t want to lose my captain. If I knew he went over and we didn’t have too much stormy weather, I’m pretty sure I could get him if he was conscious. But if not, I’m not so sure...so he sure just wear a harness more often! -Rebecca

Sir, you are amazing. I am 54yrs young and a UK Yactmaster Ocean, after over 35 years sailing with a PFD and harness I have never drowned yet. Short handed, you will only fall once and then you will decide whether you made the right choice. Your choice your boat, I only have 2 occasions when you were a life jacket on my boat 1. If you want to.. 2. When I tell you to. Fair winds...

Appreciate your reminding us all, the dangers COVID still presents. I've endured life changing loss, early in life...What worked for me, focus on the positives and built my resolve as I found ways to step above, around or through the naysayers. You're brave enough to sail the seas, you found and tasted true loves in life...You only get one life, keep adding to the adventure...filming and editing is easily learned...your fans, have proven their support...they'll allow for a learning curve...Thoroughly screen your crew...and Good Luck. There are so many stories out there and I've been blessed with seeing them while living aboard my sailboat during the years. It's not where you have been or where you are going the next day, but what you are doing right now. @@RVLifeNOW For me, initially your channel was more of technical go-to channel for boat repairs etc, as compared to the more usual 'cocktails in the Caribs' productions...I assume if you were to carry on with this project it would take a slightly different path and perhaps focus more on the cruising aspect? This I believe requires a more personal investment from you...but if it is something you feel you would enjoy doing i for one, and i believe a good chunk of your viewership which now sees you as much more than just a technical reference point, would very much enjoy following and learning from your experiences....bit of a long-winded reply but what I'm trying to say is that, if you feel it's something you want to take over and continue with, just go for it :)

Rebecca, please go back and watch yourself in some videos. You speak with confidence and authority about the things you know well. Patrick mentioned the forecast you gave him, and he didn’t second guess you. He must have known that he married a woman of wisdom. You had this boat before you had Patrick. Thus, sailing meant a lot to you, not because it mattered to your spouse. You are a woman who sails. Do what is comfortable for you, but please don’t disappear from us. Talk about how you are doing. Let us surround you. Just talk about anything, but remember that you are a sailing elder in this community. Maybe you should write books about weather. Write about sailing with Patrick when you are ready. You have much to contribute to us. We love you.
