The TV program wanted us to cut the performance a bit short, because before we played this tune, Manolo and I did a great Percussion solo...so there you go...But JP wanted to play longer I guess. Hahaha. 1976 it was recorded at the Midnight Concerts...

The most amazing thing about this video is Zawinul doubling everything Jaco does while providing a harmony on the Rhodes. The man was amazing.

Dear Alex, I hope you read this. You are one at the very top of my list of first influences of drummers. Your trademark is keeping the pocket tight while simultaneously inserting those funky bass drum riffs (triples, etc.); it's part of your genius in the world of modern drumming. That interplay you and Jaco particularly shared, when you'd accent certain notes he'd play, I appreciate so much. To me, it expressed the comraderie, mutual passion and synergy between you. As a drummer himself, it's apparent that Jaco dug your style very much, to want to record and play off of what you gave. Drums and the bass in and of themselves are very dynamic, powerful instruments based on their inherent natural properties. But your God-given swagger paired with Jaco's is spiritual harmony. You are one of the most underrated drummers out there, yet one of the most masterful. May God bless and keep you.

Thank you so much for your kind words my friend, they bring joy to my soul and its true every thing you're saying, I brought Jaco to the band and then he wanted me to play the drums, because we used to be room mates and jam all the time while in our room and any how the rest is history…I do not duel so much in what happened, but I do stay current not only on my playing but mainly giving the Glory to the one who gaved me the gift of music…GOD uses me all over the world sharing my gift and blessings lots of new musicians with the experience i had…still recording a lot of music. Blessings to you my brother in Christ.-aa

Alex Neciosup-Acuna Hi Alex, I'm a drummer, good friend of Manolo and i'd like to tell you how much your drumming is so unconventional and it's one of the reason if it is one of my favorite... The notes you play on songs like Havona, are just making the spaceship trip more intense, and no drummer could duplicate those notes, cause nobody or no drum school in the world teaches how to play this way. It's a blessing that you went from percussions to the drumkit to produce the best album in the music history to me : " Heavy Weather ". God bless you dear Alex !
@MavinsMusic
@MavinsMusic 10 жыл бұрын
Alex Neciosup-Acuna Dear Alex, so glad to receive your response. My apologies but I was only able to read it today. It's not common to have the kind of musical kinship with someone as you apparently did with Jaco. Although the two of you played different instruments, it's as if it were two people playing drums, given that Jaco's applications in his bass playing to me sounds at times like something I'd play on drums because I do at times play a part that a bass, a guitar, etc. would play in order to color a piece. I found the history you shared with Jaco quite interesting and think that Weather Report's experiences should be captured on the silver screen especially for the young people to see so that they come to know what fine gifts each of the group's members had been blessed with. One other thing, Alex, my friend, I happen to be Ms., no Mr. (smile). Peace and love.

for all you young lads, the acoustic 360 consisted of a preamplifier head connected to one or more powered cabs... each cab was a folded bass horn design with a single 18 inch driver, which was actually pointed backwards inside the cab... the blue band covers the back of the speaker, while the black grids are the mouths of the horn

jaco's contributions are enormous, he is the only musician who's sound you can still hear pretty clearly on the radio, in the elevator,waiting rooms, on new age recods, in jazz, pop, funk... on a DAILY basis. There is no other like that... his bass sound and the way he played it was an part of what he did in music, his compositions and bandleadership , he'd just sing or play the parts to everyone, no musicpaper, no scores... he knew every part of every song for every musician in the big band)

Being a professional musician and playing drums and bass, I have never heard anyone make a claim of Entwhistle being better than Jaco. In the world of music, for those that really know and understand what they are talking about, there are only 2 bass "Gods": Jaco and James Jamerson.one guy who could be one of the greatest of all time (Wooten) even once said "There are two kinds of bass playing: Before Jaco and After Jaco".nobody even comes close to what Jaco did, except maybe Stanley Clarke.

I bought the Heavy Weather album (CD's hadn't been invented yet) in 1977. I was 15. It still sounds great 30 years later. It's a shame so much new music today is DISPOSABLE, like diapers or empty Gatorade bottles. Keep looking, young gun. There's a lot of great music back there. KZbin is a big help, bringing back lost stuff I thought I'd never see again.

Jaco Pastorius plays a sunburst Fender Precision Bass with the frets filed off (almost like a fretless bass) and that's partially how he got his awesome mellow bass sound. In this concert, he plays his bass through an Acoustic 360/361 amplifier that has an 18-inch folded horn speaker cabinet. This amp was one of the best ones around back in those days. A few years later, I used its successor, the Acoustic 371 system, which consisted of an Acoustic 370 amp with an Acoustic 301 speaker cabinet.

Jaco's performances never fail to bring tears to my eyes all the while I am grinning like an idiot. His playing never ever ceases to amaze me. No one will ever come close.....I would like to mention that Teentown was written about a local teen club that many bands including mine played at in the mid 60's. Jaco never actually played there. The club closed long before jaco even took up the bass.

My favorite Jaco composition. This is the epitome of instrumental juxtaposition. In this band my ear is always drawn to the complementary attributes of Zawinul and the noodling of Shorter, both geniuses in their own right. Rhythmically speaking, you are looking at the best bass player ever in Pastorius, but the one guy I think surpasses him dynamically is Stanley Clarke. His upright work alone is beastly, but what he does on electric puts him over the top.

Look closely at the end. If you know the orgiginal recording, you'll hear Jaco beginning the melody again after the whole tune's end point. Wayne Shorterlooks left at Jaco in puzzlement, and Joe Zawinul gets up from the keyboard and clearly signals the band to stop, cutting the melody short a few bars in. Jaco, equally clearly, did not expect this and moves towards Joe, his body language registering a protested "Why".

@Drblooter99 Actually, since Jaco isn't the only one who continues, I suspect they normally played the song longer but Zawinul got a signal from the TV producer to cut it short because of time restraints. It's a credit to the quality of the musicians that they stopped instantly of cue.

I remember this show lo these many years ago and I was mesmerized by the sound of it all. Jaco was always a personal fave of mine. And of course I was crestfallen upon hearing of his death. It is fitting that Zawinul took some of the responsibility for this tragedy in an interview. He says that Jaco was a complete teetotaler and that he coaxed him to take that first drink. Being a Finnish ancestry meant 2 things, either drink to excess or not at all. But he, with his mental frailty, drank.

How did I know that? Being a musician helps. Even though Acoustic went out if business a long time ago, their 360/361 bass amplifier was very popular and easily recognizable with its large light blue panel in the middle. I myself used its successor, the Acoustic 370 head with a 301 bottom a.k.a. the Acoustic 371, which was somewhat similar to the 360/361 rig. As for the Fender Jazz Bass, it has been manufactured for several decades and is still very common and its shape is easily recognizable.
