I definitely prefer the fogged and strategic sponged edges to the quick real dark drippy look. But like you mentioned it does take time and if its super dark you may not notice unless you go real heavy with the drips or dark sponged areas. Looks like you're one panel closer to having your own walkthrough. 😁👍

I agree. When he first sprayed the black I thought, "Oh, he's ruined it!" How wrong I was - after just that little bit of dabbing with the sea sponge, it looked amazing.

Just WOW! on the finished look! I'm allergic to mold and if I were to walk into a room that looked like this, I would immediately stop breathing and leave as quick I as possibly could. These look so real!

Another great tutorial, Derek. You make really important points that some haunters miss when it comes to aging and distressing with paints, especially about using different colors and techniques on the same wall. I really appreciated the subtlety you gained by using your airbrush on the beige wall and the ‘black mold’ on the darker wall. Keep up the great work!

Thanks! I think expanding your color pallet can open up a whole new world for haunters, especially when it comes to aging.

@@VanOaksProps True, and it’s such an easy step to add to aging or detailing any wall or prop. As a rule, I try to use three colors at least where appropriate for base, highlight and dark tone layers. And pay attention to the show lighting so it doesn’t change or nullify the aging work. Similarly, it was so smart of you to provide examples on light and dark wall finishes to illustrate how the base tone affects the aging options and effects.

Darn! I missed it! I love both techniques. The dark wallpaper was so pretty. It already looked a little spooky from the beginning.

and if you don't have/scared of, an airbrush really thinned down paint in a spray bottle will not be as controlled, but okay, and then use the sponges to fix it. and more than 1 color adds a lot. This was a real good video. not many folks try this, I hope they do now

Great video Derek thanks for the disclaimer on not being a timesaver although one could figure that out by noticing the time lapse...;) Do you like to pay a little extra attention to the opening scene of the haunt, we believe it assists in the suspension of disbelief

You always make it look so easy man!!! Your like the fungus grime master!! LOL Do you guys have a haunted place that you do this work for? Please excuse me that I don't know...I hide in my basement A lot! :)
@VanOaksProps3 жыл бұрын
Hahaha. Thank you, I think? We decorate our place for Halloween, but it's just a yard display with tombstones and stuff. So no actual structures or anything. I'd love to do this for a haunted attraction though. The upside to this technique is that it could just as easily be used for a SW project. Aging helmets/vehicles/etc.
