Making a mask for a costume is an easy project to make out of leather! Chuck shows some simple ways to get patterns that can then be transferred onto leather, wet formed and adding a variety of decorations. The possibilities are endless! There are still a few weeks before Halloween if you're still trying to figure out your costume.

For those with a silhouette cameo they have great masks you can cut out on some NON STICK stencil plastic and then use it on leather.

Love the leather element videos chuck! I'm relatively new to leather crafting and was hoping to see a video on setting grommets/eyelets. I have an idea for a wallet and would like some guidance lol. Thanks!

I'd like to see a Leather Element or Project Video about making a Braided Leather Bullwhip.

Hi there, This isn't something Chuck has made before and it's pretty specialized like a saddle. We'll keep this in mind but we'll need some time to ourselves to get more comfortable with it.

@@WeaverLeatherSupply No problem....Was hoping i'd stump you. ;) These videos have made me interested in leather work...I have some ideas that are out of the box....Mainly incorporating leather into other things i make. Like you guys and the bullwhip, it may take a while until i'm comfortable enough with leather to dive into it, but i'll be sure to send photos.

What do you finish the back side of the mask with? Also how to keep the paint from rubbing off on things? Love the Anubis mask
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Patrick, Since it's going to be touching your face we would recommend keeping the back natural. If you do dye the back we would recommend adding a top coat. Angelus makes a great top coat available in Satin or Matte finish for painted masks, it goes on the same as a regular top coat and should keep the paint from rubbing off.

Those spool racks on the wall behind you, do you sell them?
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 4 жыл бұрын
So sorry, we don’t sell the spool racks but they’re easy to make. They’re just a pine 1x4 and I’ve drilled ¼” holes at a 45 degree (or close) angle (and drop ¼” dowels in with some glue. Easy to make and you can make them longer or shorter or with multiple rows.

Chuck. You mention that we can ask questions for possible future segments of the Leather Element. Here is one. I have a need to attach an elastic band (1/2in to 1in) to a piece of leather. It will be 'connected' on both ends so it can slip over a book (to keep it shut) I am having trouble finding a demonstration on how to securely attach the elastic to the leather. I have tried to sew it. The band does not sit flat and will not take pricking iron holes. I was thinking about using rivets. Not sure that will hold. Any ideas?
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Bruce, Elastic is a different animal altogether and I have had the same trouble. Rivets will work since you only have to punch 1, 2, or 3 holes but it’s tough to make that look good. The only thing I can suggest is to rivet it and then sew a shaped piece of leather over the connection (use a good adhesive and that will glue elastic and leather together). If you choose a shape like a chevron or something similar then it will fit right in with the overall look and will cover the rivets and the end of the elastic (which never looks clean). This will look good and should last for years. When you punch for rivet holes in the elastic use a wood burner, or something similar, to seal the hole edges and that will give it some good durability too. See if this helps?

Hoping that you can somewhat cover about smells in a future episode! I got to handle a jacket that perpetually smells like... paint?
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 4 жыл бұрын
That’s a tough one, but, you’re right. There are leathers that have a strong smell. Sometimes it’s the tannage or top coat applied at the tannery (from time to time the hides in the middle of a pallet don’t get the dry time other hides do and will retain the odor longer) and sometimes it’s just age. There is a way to go about it but it’s a serious process and I wouldn’t try it unless it’s a jacket that I love dearly. My only advice is to try a dry cleaner that specializes in leather (most do) and see if they have some good advice.

Hi, can you make a Video on working with baked leather? Can you soften it and re-harden it later?
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 4 жыл бұрын
Hi there, Once the leather is baked it will stay hardened and in the shape you baked it in. You will have a few minutes once it's out of the oven to fine tune the shape but there isn't a way to soften it once it's baked.

I kind of like that he doesn't. His whole thing is showing how easy it is to get started. Just fold a piece of paper in half and draw something. It's a simple thing, but there is something intensely satisfying about making something that started off as an idea in your head.
