Wow, am I ever glad this popped up for me. As a fiber and textile artist (primarily a spinner, dyer, knitter and weaver, I loved hearing them talk about every aspect of their fiber worlds. So much resonates about the fiber, and then seeing and hearing how they are using it for their art form was just so informational. Such intelligence about their craft. Wow. Love this so much. ❤

A strong introduction from contemporary weavers helping to map the journey from tradition to a strong future for their work. A generous sharing of personal vision, history, and technique.

Thank you. I had a dream that I am a weaver of large wall hangings. I have tried to join classes and they are closed a year in advance, soooo I am going to teach myself. I am drawn to using nature as part of my weaving. This opened me more. Thank you. I am 72 and it is not too late to live my dream.

I learned so much about the churro fleece from a vetranarian in North Texas. Nat Adams was her name and she had a large flock of churro sheep. I bought many fleeces from her early in my fiber life and learned to appreciate and work with all the natural colors. They are remarkable animals.

Thank you for the opportunity to hear the voices, the inspiration and the way of life of these wonderful weavers. I most appreciated the question about how and why they weave. It inspired me to think of why I weave. To all of them, thanks for the encouragement and sharing your story.

Very interesting, I'm glad I came across this on KZbin. I agree with having buyers direct contact with artists, no middle man, we have the technology to do so.

what was the name of the government program subsidizing wool? I heard “wool by” but nothing comes up when I search it. The subtitles say “will by” but I couldn’t find anything with that either. Also thank you for this beautiful and necessary film.

It was the Navajo Wool and Marketing Industry a part of the Wool and mohair program eliminated small payments and the system collapsed, www.gao.gov/assets/150/148900.pdf and www.culturalsurvival.org/publications/cultural-survival-quarterly/fleecing-navajo-weavers

Why would they not call it Navajo weaving! .? The Irish borrowed from the Vikings the Scots borrowed from the Irish? And it goes on and on. ....

I did not know Dine men were weavers, or is this new?
@malcolmbeauford2644 жыл бұрын
Its common alot of them are gay. Its rare to come across a male navajo who weaves and is straight. Its bad I dont like telling people I weave cause they start with the gay jokes. I'm a straight navajo male so i make sure I tell them that first. I think it has something to do with navajo fathers not really being there. Alot of glonies(drunks) on the rez just leaving their kids. So the mom raises them and they learn to weave from her. I learned to weave from a college class and stuck with it cause i own sheep. I just happen to be a navajo male. I run into more lady weavers than males.
@oceanpoincare3 жыл бұрын
Yes males can weave.
@chantimanou3 жыл бұрын
@@malcolmbeauford264 totally out of context - because their gayness does not have any impact on them being men. The question was if there always were male weavers. The answer should be yes or no.
@bettybilly24963 жыл бұрын
Men are not suppose to weave because it’s a feminine art so as you can see, more gay men are taking up the art.
@kathyk4793 жыл бұрын
Malcolm Beauford. Please don't be embarrassed about what you do! You are an artist! So, am I , I make magic wands. They're little pieces of art to me. If someone wants to believe there something else, that's up to them. I've gotten some looks though, like oh how long have you been a witch? I'm. Not. I don't believe they exist. To tell the truth. Lol. I also work in a school. After seeing so many people! I sincerely, believe gay people are born the way they are. Some people are abused some are impressionable some want to be gay or trans or just different. But, I really think. You should hold your head high be proud of who you are !, Not everyone can be an Artist! And a good one at that! Good Luck! Kathy in Ohio
