Curious about how to warp on the fussiest of ancient materials on your rigid heddle? Well, follow me as I drink martinis and warp up my loom with Bodkins 16/2 linen. Learn about why I warp "backwards" and how why your linen may go all wonky when you indirect warp.

Great tip about tensioning with the warp down. I'm a newish weaver about to warp another project, and this is so helpful.

I learned the hard way about tensioning my warp in downshed. Just might have been around the time I was weaving some cotton/linen combo towels. Good thing I had plenty of S hooks!

Agreed! Thank goodness for s hooks! Tension on the down shed is such a "warpsaver" for those unforgiving yarns. I also add a pick up stick in the down shed behind the heddle and it also helps keep things balanced.

I used a spray bottle of water to keep my warp damp so it would better endure friction/abrasion (this was on a floor loom w/metal heddles). Linen is much stronger when wet. I am eager to try a linen project with my rigid heddle.

Deep dive into the frequency of linen. Once you do you will look at it differently and possibly suspect why its been used since ancient times!

I get the why; it's a technological marvel. Without linen, we could not have had ships and travel. But the HOW is fascinating. Spinning hair from animals or grasses is an easy jump, but the processing of linen (and indigo for that matter) takes many steps, yet still may have predated shepherding sheep for wool. I've read that linen could have been the first agricultural crop: so it must have been very powerful. Also fascinating is that the process to make linen was used on other plants around the world: ramie is processed in a similar way and grasses and flowers like milkweed were spun in pre-colonial America. My best guess is that early spinners saw the quality of bast fibers after molding all winter in damp rain, maybe looking for flexible reeds to make baskets and one thing lead to another. Either way it's incredible!

When you rolled onto front beam first did you do it with paper and yank and crank? Or just a quick sloppy roll on.
@lovelikesalt6457

Hello! Sorry for my delay. The first time I beam the front beam, I do it with paper and yank and crank. The goal is to get it as perfect as possible the first roll on, then when you roll back you have the opportunity to fine tune any inconsistencies for a more perfect warp. When I tried to roll on sloppy first then roll back I found I had more issues.
