What is web hosting and how does it work? In this tutorial, I'll explain how domains & web hosting function together with DNS settings to host your website. By changing the nameservers at your domain registrar, you point your domain to any web hosting company.
The most affordable choice is HostGator for web hosting.
🌎 How to Install WordPress in Minutes 👉 websiteprofitcourse.com/hosting/
✅ Start now with HostGator 👉 websiteprofitcourse.com/hostg...
Once you understand how web hosting works, we'll discuss the difference between the package types offered by all major web hosting providers including Shared, Reseller, Virtual Private Server (VPS), Dedicated, Cloud, & Managed WordPress.
There are pros & cons to each, and you'll learn how to choose a web host that fits your situation.
A complete beginner should start with a cheap shared hosting plan because it will take you time to design a great website and build traffic to it. Only then will you need to upgrade to a better web host or plan!
1) How Websites Work
The first step to launch a website is registering the domain name under a domain registrar (i.e. HostGator or GoDaddy).
Today, it might be hard to get your preferred one or two-word domain name. There is an entire business industry to purchasing thousands of domain names (automatically via software) and selling them to people and/or companies who must get their brand domain regardless of the cost!
Three-word domains are more widely available - the main principles I follow are: keep them short, memorable, easy to say, and stick with COM extension unless you have a specific need for another extension.
Once you register your domain name, the next step is to create your web hosting account with a company like HostGator.
Most companies offer all services - domain registration, web hosting, design options, plus others. I recommend that you take care of both domain and web hosting with HostGator to simplify the setup process.
Upon creating your web hosting account, your hosting platform will send you their “nameservers” along with a link to login to your web hosting control panel (cPanel).
Let's explain how domain name system servers (DNS) work. It’s simple, however, it’s a confusing concept to website beginners.
Domain registration companies give you access to “DNS settings” for each domain. This points a domain name to whatever web hosting company you choose.
So when you receive the nameservers from your hosting company via email, all you need to do is copy/paste them into your domain DNS settings.
The function of the DNS server is to translate your domain name into an IP address!
When you update your DNS settings at the domain registrar, it can sometimes take 24-48 hours for these to “propagate” to all DNS servers located around the world.
NOTE: If you register your domain and set up hosting with HostGator, you don’t need to worry about this step because it’s good to go when your account is created.
Thus, when you as a visitor go to your browser and type in a domain name, the domain name is sent to the DNS server. The DNS server then maps it to the IP address of your web host (which you specified via the custom nameserver), and all the files making up your website are downloaded to the user’s browser for them to view.
2) What is Your Goal?
People create an online presence for personal reasons and there aren’t many good excuses to NOT create your first website!
You may want to accomplish one of several things with your website, so it’s important to define your specific needs to quickly pick the best hosting type for your online platform.
Some good questions to ask yourself are:
Are you creating one website only?
Do you have a vision for many websites?
What software? (i.e. WordPress, builders, templates, code)
High traffic (global) vs. low (local)?
TIP: Remember you can upgrade your hosting package for more space, speed or features. There is nothing wrong with starting a small site on a budget and growing as you see more traffic.

Make sure that you buy domain name and the host with the same company. Other wise, you will have to wait 2 months to be able to transfer the domain name
@RayDelVecchio
@RayDelVecchio 2 жыл бұрын
It's definitely easier if they're together (less setup). However, I have been using GoDaddy for domains since the beginning and have never used their hosting services. As long as you follow the instructions with updating DNS settings, it's not too bad. But yes, transfers can be a bit of a hassle and there are conditions where your domain will lock for a period as you've mentioned!
@Sanjaysview
@Sanjaysview Жыл бұрын
That locking system only applicable for new domains which are less than 60 days old. After 60 days its just one click process to transfer but need to be patience since it takes 5-7 days from registrar end.

Ray, your video is greatly appreciated. For a beginner like myself the real confusion comes from the apparent unlimited options, strategies, approaches, and IT info that one needs to get their head around to make the right decision in terms of their personal preferences. Your video is a goldmine of information with some real nuggets that create simple clarity. Great stuff....

Thanks, Terrence. There's so many ways to go about it, so many services. All I know is most professional websites I come across are built with WordPress so you can move from host-to-host, start cheap and upgrade whenever. That will continue to be my preference for the foreseeable future!

Great vid! If you plan on creating a landing page using a page buildng tool (elementor or wix for ex.), and you then plan to run paid traffic to that landing page, what type of hosting would you recommend? Many thanks!
@RayDelVecchio
@RayDelVecchio 3 жыл бұрын
Elementor is specifically for WordPress, so if you're just starting out I'd go for shared hosting to keep it simple and cheap (HostGator is the one I've used the longest to this day). Here's a tutorial to start with them - kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJO7l6GampymeMk - I don't use Wix but I don't believe you pick a hosting company to use their builder, instead they bundle the content management with their own hosting into a monthly service which is more expensive than WordPress + 3rd-party host.

@RayDelVecchio
@RayDelVecchio 2 жыл бұрын
Personally I like to separate, mainly because I'm dealing with client websites across several hosts. So I use GoDaddy for domains. However, if you're only building one website, it's easier to do both at the same company since they're linked from day one. Otherwise you have to update the "name servers" at the domain registrar to point to whoever is hosting the website!
@RayDelVecchio
@RayDelVecchio 2 жыл бұрын
I'll just add that the primary issue I've seen are clients who use a service to build their website. That company registers the domain and builds it for them. Then they cancel or stop using them, and the company WILL NOT give up the domain. That's a pain and why I recommend that all companies/people have access to their domain name with their own account.

Is it possible to update your website from time to time even already linked to the Domain and Host so, do I need to pay again for update of ?
@RayDelVecchio
@RayDelVecchio 3 жыл бұрын
DNS is built-into your ISP. When you buy web hosting, they give you their "nameserver". When you buy a domain, you link that nameserver. When anyone across the world goes to your website, their ISP sends the domain name to DNS, where it translates the domain to an IP address (you control this by setting the nameserver). Once you have web hosting secured, you don't pay anything extra to update. You should have direct access to your web server and can update or transfer files freely, assuming you don't surpass the bandwidth limit. Tech jargon is tough to decipher, but once things are working, you largely can ignore it or ask your web hosting provider for assistance. Keep at it and good luck!

Hello my name is Ken Flucas. I'm planning on developing and designing my own website. I have a raspberry pi4 that I would like to use as my server. I want my website to contain blogs, news, pics, videos, music, commission based ads & links, and capable of streaming live video. What's the best way to go about achieving this goal? Also, I plan on learning coding. Will this be useful?
@RayDelVecchio
@RayDelVecchio 4 жыл бұрын
The Raspberry Pi part - I have no idea about. I have a vague idea of what that is though I haven't used it to see the applications. Regarding what you're looking for, self-hosted WordPress would be the best option because it's a content management systems and it's capable of handling everything you mention. I'd probably just link up streaming video with a 3rd party service. You can embed your stream from KZbin/Facebook/Twitch with a link or code snippet most likely. And yes, WordPress is a good platform to learn code in pieces. You can use Custom HTML within WordPress posts, assign elements CSS classes, and then design your site within the CSS Customizer. And if you want to go deeper into PHP, you can work with the theme template files.

However, when I watch tutorials how to make a Wordpress, it simply says I need a domain. there are a lot, like bluehost, or Godaddy and many more. Here is the confusing part, first, I don't understand the difference between host and server when it comes to building a website. Second, why do I need a server while on the internet doesn't say such thing. can you help please whether I trust the guy or the tutorial on KZbin? do you think I should build my Wordpress website according to tutorial? Lastly, does a server help with a website speed and safety? thank you

Yes, you have to renew hosting/domain after each term is up. You cannot do lifetime. However, you have the ability to backup your website files and move from host to host, as long as you're not using an all-in-one system like Squarespace or something like that. This is exactly why I recommend WordPress.org.

I deal mostly with WordPress for content management, which is built with PHP. So that's useful to know if you want to customize WordPress templates.

I thought the DNS is provided by our ISP?
@RayDelVecchio
@RayDelVecchio 4 жыл бұрын
I believe you are correct... I may have misspoke at some point in this video, but basically when you type in a domain and hit enter, your ISP has a built-in DNS system to check for the IP address. It gets the IP address according to the nameservers set at your domain registrar. That's why it can take time after you switch nameservers for your new host to show to visitors across the world. It's called domain propagation, the nameserver changes must flow to the DNS servers across the world. The terminology and step-by-step process can get a bit confusing.. even for someone who has a decent understanding like myself!

You say that cloud hosting does not operate from a physical server... but isn't this wrong? Because even data 'on the cloud' is still stored on a physical server somewhere... can you fact check or clarify this?
@RayDelVecchio
@RayDelVecchio 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the website data will exist in multiple places, the cloud element brings more redundancy and that is managed 'virtually' by the provider even though they give you resources that you'd normally see in a single physical-server package. A CDN (content delivery network) is a similar concept that you'll see added on to certain hosting packages. A CDN is for 'static' files, like JPG photos and others, that get pushed to servers across the country. The CDN server location that's used for when you download the website in the browser is determined by which is closest to you, so it's faster and better optimized for every site visitor.

I wish this was less a tutorial and more a basics so I could send it to Web Devs with no clue. Also remove any branding. State that changing DNS servers on existing DN's can break stuff. You know, the usual stuff SysAdmins have to deal with when Web Devs get involved.

Good tips, I could go into these details in a new video. This one was geared towards beginners who have zero experience with an existing website. I've done the DNS switch to knockout email a few times! As a solo freelancer, I can't count the number of random, weird problems I've had to solve across dozens of services/providers.

They are constantly updating and testing things. Right now they let you show "chapters" in the video progress bar, and it has worked on half my new videos, no explanation for why it doesn't show on the rest. This is the internet in a nutshell, lol. No such thing as a finished, smooth working website... always a work in progress!

DNS = framing of a house. It's boring, and it's important. I work mostly with contractors, I know how they avoid tech at all costs (often to their detriment). This video is not for them. I have never explained any of this to my clients.
@RayDelVecchio
@RayDelVecchio 4 жыл бұрын
This is a great lesson for the freelancing side because I think it's a classic beginner mistake when discussing a website with a potential client. Have to keep it way more straightforward and focused on how to get them customers. It took me a while to learn since I grew up with computers and it was second nature to me. My goal is to explain the basic tech as clearly as possible to the people who actually want to dig a little deeper!

It's a Google Slides presentation. If I worried about every detail (because my instinct is to), I'd publish 2 videos a year. One of the keys to progress is getting over these things that trigger you, and produce more. If you build a website, don't micromanage your own progress like this. Be prolific with mistakes. Keep things simple, my friend.

You might have a WordPress plugin that displays that "Coming Soon" page (I've done that before while building a website). Otherwise, you should login to HostGator and contact their support.
