What can you say about a campaign, or one shot, to introduce elementary/middle school students to the game for a DnD club at school. I'm imagining that the Monk has the Ranger survival features in the Shadowfell. They're just too disciplined for the Shadowfell to get to them. The Shadowfell tries to send the psychic manifestation of the party's hunger at the party, and the Monk is just like, "Yeah, I am pretty hungry; the Dao says I should eat." And then the manifestation of the Monk's hunger turns into a sandwich.

I had a Night Hag that would "bargain" for the negative emotions of local villagers in exchange for her favors and in turn she would distill those experiences into Sorrow Sworn. It was a great adventure for my team to figure out where these strange monsters with familiar faces were coming from and dealing with all the misery they caused. They eventually found the Hag, who was growing powerful enough to pull the area around her home into the shadowfel itself! Such an epic story arc! Good news for me, they let her escape the final fight and now I have a recurring villain. (Evil DM Cackling)

Quick Homebrew monster. What do y'all think? Definitely powerful, but fits, I feel. The Anxious Medium monstrosity, neutral evil AC: 19 (natural armor) HP: 332 (35d10 + 140) Speed: 45 ft STR: 20 (+5) DEX: 17 (+3) CON: 18 (+4) INT: 9 (-1) WIS: 7 (-2) CHA: 15 (+2) Skills: Perception +4 Damage Resistance: bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage when 2 or more creatures are within 30 ft of it Senses: darkvision 60 ft, passive Perception 19 Languages: Common Amxious Assault: When The Anxious makes an attack, the attack roll benefits from Dexterity, and the damage roll benefits from Strength. Anxious Mind: The Anxious has advantage on Intelligence and Wisdom saving throws and Perception checks, but has disadvantage on Insight checks and all Charisma saving throws and skill checks. Constant Anxiety: If there are 2 or more creatures within 30 ft of The Anxious, it has advantage on attack rolls and deals an extra 11 (2d10) psychic damage and 11 (2d10) necrotic damage. For each creature beyond the second that is within 30 ft of The Anxious. This creature gains one additional attack with its Multiattack Action. Additionally, this creature can concentrate on up to 3 spells at a time, so long as it doesn't cast a spell that would deal damage to a creature, regardless of concentration. Innate Spellcasting (+9 to hit, DC 17) at-will: Bane, Mind Spike, Major Image 3/day: Bestow Curse, Blindness/Deafness, Compulsion, Fear 1/day: Synaptic Static Actions Multiattack: The Anxious can make two claw attacks, or one claw attack and use its overwhelming anxiety action. Claw: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft, one target. Hit: 23 (4d8 + 5) slashing damage. Overwhelming Anxiety: The Anxious can choose a target within 30 ft of it that it can see, and that creature must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the target becomes frightened for 1 minute. On a successful save, the target's base movement speed is halved until the start of its next turn. However, the target still gains full bonuses to its movement speed through features as normal. (i.e. A 15th level Human Monk with the Mobile feat would have a movement speed of 50 ft still. 15 ft from halved base speed, 10 ft from Mobile, 25 ft from Unarmored Movement.)

I love these monsters. Great insight as always. I have a small group I’m trying to get into playing and it’ll be my first time as well. They’re interested in getting technical with combat. For example shooting a dragon in the eye to give it a blind spot, or cutting the Achilles’ tendon of a giant to bring the vital spots down to their level. I’d love to see your guys’s take on expanding combat beyond the “roll dice, subtract damage from hit point pool” and maybe some mechanics and throws on how you’d come close to those technicalities in combat. I’m struggling with getting my head around it. “I aim for the jugular vein” is obviously a fatal blow to a human bandit and would make hit points irrelevant, but at the same time if I were fighting a bandit to the death, the neck is an obvious choice to target. Hitting his neck with a sharp object 7 times before he gives out and dies seems a little immersion breaking. Help pleasums!
@comradeshamrock75725 жыл бұрын
Do they succeed in doing enough damage to drop the bandit? Maybe they don't do enough damage to drop him immediately due to adrenaline and a hand over the wound but will be able to fight for another 30 seconds (5 rounds). You can also look at rules like Injuries and Massive Damage in the DMG P272. For inspiration more than the actual tables and mechanics. Perhaps the slash to the throat was only superficial, leaving only a minor gash rather than a straight gutting of the poor sod's neck. Then try and work out with your players what you think would be fair. Or you could use the system as is. It all depends on whether you think it would be fun.

@comradeshamrock75725 жыл бұрын
@@daddyp1877 Ah then I wouldn't worry about it. Get the basics down first and then look at expanding into things that appeal to and interest you. At low enough levels it won't matter too much about aiming for the jugular on bandits.They'll have low enough hit points that the players should drop them in a hit or two. Three if they're really unlucky. And if you need you still struggle with wrapping your head around fatal blows just imagine it somewhat like TV. They can get bludgeoned, beaten and stabbed but until they lose that last hit point, plot armour is in effect and they can still keep swinging. ;)

I would say it different. One might see the rage to be a cathartic release. It is drawing power from your emotions. Where as angry would be this smoldering feeling that actually drains you. Thus making these monsters actually focus on this being who is depriving them of what makes them exist.

The campaign I'm running now involves a Shadowfell that is quite populated (with living people), and this video really got me thinking about how the residents might deal with the Sorrowsworn. For example, the primary goblin city is there. I imagined them having a city patrol consisting of warriors and wizards dedicated to staving these psychic manifestations off. They've effectively set up a shell containing what more resembles their own demiplane than the rest of the Shadowfell. Then you have the drow population which has spilled over from the Underdark. Got to thinking that maybe the Sorrowsworn are the reason why they haven't taken over the Shadowfell. They try to weaponize them, but too often fall prey to the emotions they manifest. They primarily thrive there because one of their goddesses bails them out. There are also demons who thrive there, using the manifested emotions as fuel or currency. I'm beginning to wonder if they themselves might manifest their own psychic entities that would wreak additional havoc. And then you have the shadar-kai, who have adapted to their presence by developing a culture of letting go of emotions and embracing death. They coexist with the Sorrowsworn and may even study them. As a result they make great guides for lost travelers. And finally I got an idea for the necromancers' guild that's based there to experiment with fusing Sorrowsworn-like entities into undead creatures, effectively weaponizing them.

i have an idea for a campaign that goes more or less like this: A skullord wishes to drain the power of the raven queen to gain control of the shadowfell, yet he can't get to her because the shadarkai is always protecting her, so he develop a plan. Using a mage pawn on the material realm, they start to make the shadowfell to overlap with the material plane, trying to bring out a nightwalker into reality to gain control over the plane, but also randomly making sorrowsworn to spawn, forcing the shadarkai to act and stop them as they are beings born from the shadowfell. The skullord plans to keep the shadarkai occupied on the material realm while he can keep a low profile using his mage servant to attack the raven queen and drain her powers. The party ends up getting in involved on the plot while doing a random quest against some bandits who are selling slaves from a distant land; they end up finding the place overruned by a lost and wretches that spawned because of the slaves feelings.

I imagine that spells/spell effects could be used within the Shadowfell to seed negative emotions, whether used by or on the party by outsiders or regional effects (with saves). Friends, Dissonant Whispers, Cause Fear, Charm person/monster, Hold person/monster, Crown of Madness, Wrathful smite, Ray of Enfeeblement, Fear, Compulsion, Confusion, Mislead, Scatter (Calm emotions would be helpful to the party to be prepared) Essentially anything that can create seeds of mistrust, anxiety, or anger, in the party themselves or others they interact with. Using friends or charm person on a benign Shadowfell denizen could result in Angry showing up for the conflict, and that denizen would know enough to disengage and vanish as the fight commences.
@44tuck3r5 жыл бұрын
Possibly a bit too much of a mind game for me, but a DM could make wretched show up every time someone expresses a little negativity, so that the party associates negativity with danger, and creating a situation where in the process of trying to manage each others emotions they attract bigger threats. Character flaws and personality traits should also he in full effect in the shadowfell - mirages of loved ones, nightmares, illusory treasure (a character who typically values material stuff might see that another player has something new. Since spells like Creation and Illusory Dragon draw on the Shadowfell, it is clear that their is a precedent for illusions in the shadowfell to be tangible amd harmful. An illusionist could have much stronger powers in the Shadowfell potentially, or maybe even be a primary antagonist in the story that (as in the prior post) attempts to manipulate the party to sow fear, anger, and other negativity.

*note, have yet to run an encounter in the Shadowfell or an encounter with the sorrowsworn* I kind of imagine that when a mortal dies in the Shadowfell, whatever aspect of dread they were currently dealing with manifests itself. Someone died violently? The Angry shows up. Someone got lost and died, and was never recovered? The Lost shows up. Someone became isolated from their group and as a result was driven to suicide? The lonely shows up. Someone dies of starvation? The hungry shows up. Someone survived in the Shadowfell and died of their own stupidity? The wretched(s) show up. If Shadowfell is the inverse to the material plane, the underworld more or less, then playing to the strengths of the plane works perfectly I would imagine.

Sorrowsworn - Perhaps created initially by the Shadar'kai Elves, by shedding themselves of their negative emotions periodically so living in the Shadowfell is bearable? In my setting, the Shadowfell is the Land of Order, with the Feywilde being the land of chaos, though its more accurate to call it "the Land of Stillness". A place in which "True Time" exists, its passage set without the warping of planetary rotating, the sun or the stars. Example, say your a Shadar-Kai that lives there and you wanna go to the local shop. It takes 20 minutes to get there. Exactly. Regardless of how fast you run, how many shortcuts you take, if you ride a horse or literally crawl there, it will take 20 minutes EXACTLY to get there regardless. Travel in the shadowfell takes an amount of time, regardless of distance or travel method, making the world around you feel warped and against you. The Land of Stillness, as said before, is a place of absolute order. Strong emotions are elements of chaos in this place, emotions that become manifested through infection with shadowstuff to become the Sorrowsworn. They are the lands immune system attempting to destroy what it views as chaos within its silent borders.

oh man, campain that features the sorrowsworn as the main antagonistic force, that oughta change your world, it means cooking is less fancifull now, with a focus on feeding people than actually comforting at points, but the wealthy never have that issue, but then i could see the lone noble locked away in their estate being INTIMATELY aware of the lonlyness, anger management becomes essential, also, what does anger interact with the barbarians rage fature too?

If you want inspiration on how to represent the Shadowfell, take a look at Wraith the oblivion.
@Bluecho45 жыл бұрын
Yes, exactly. That game is a rich mine of inspiration for any Shadowfell adventure. Imagine the PCs traveling through the Shadowfell - they've just fought through an army of skeletons, zombies, ghosts, and sorrowsworn - and they reach a dark city with towers miles high. Then, the Hierarchy's knights, mounted on ghost horses, ride out to hunt down weak ghosts. The forges need more Soulsteel.

@@Bluecho4 or when they travel through an area that, in the material plane, is nothing but ruins of a once great city, but in the Shadowfell, it's a city that is always burning, filled with ghosts and sorrowsworn.

Maybe I can tie them to my player's Shadow Sorcerer? As his magic grows stronger, his actions could summon these monsters into reality from Shadowfell.

The Depression Lord is in conflict with the Manic Queen So the Lord has the Lonely, the Lost, and the Wretched. The Queen has the Angry, the Frantic (which has Haste cast on it always and causes saves against exhaustion when they hit), and, idk, something with illusion magic.
@Bluecho45 жыл бұрын
I would see the Manic Queen less as a Shadowfell being, and more like an Archfey. The Feywild is the opposite of the Shadowfell - bright, passionate, full of life, chaotic - just as Mania is the opposite of Depression. (Moreover, anyone who has been around someone in a Depressive state knows they are perfectly capable of anger). So it might be less a conflict between different Sorrowsworn, and more a conflict between Sorrowsworn and Fairies. With the PCs stuck in the middle.

@@Bluecho4 i keep faerie very Susana Clarke in my game. just our tastes. so its a place of madness, yes, but only in the poetic, romantic literature sense when me (bipolar) and my schizoaffective pal who plays in my game want to explore the conditions a little, faerie wouldn't quite work for it :P but i see your thinking

I had my own thought while watching this, taking from the original Ni No Kuni game in which the enemy takes pieces of people's hearts. If someone's love is removed they become cruel and heartless people. Taking that concept up a notch these monsters could just be people who have had parts of their hearts or souls taken from them, leaving them as lonely husks or angry husks that have had happiness taken away from them
