I am an electric guitarist of 61 years. I have recently discovered these mandolin brothers and sisters, and especially like this octave version. Great piece, great playing! If I was single and a hundred years younger, I think I would move to Nashville and follow this talented CUTIE around like a smitten puppy ...

I met and played a lot with Sierra when a regular mando was almost as big on her! Hahaha! She had the rhythm of an older seasoned musician at the tender age of 9 and I knew at once she was one of those rare talents that seldom come along. Later, she had plenty of reasons to have an inflated ego but it never happened, it was always about the music. Haven't talked to her in a while now but I'm very sure that hasn't changed. Who knew such a force would blast out of tiny Birdstown, Tn. :)

I've never seen or heard an octave mandolin until now and I'm very impressed. Now I want one. Not to mention Sierra Hull can play it well. She's very talented :)

difference between an octave mandolin and mandocello is: octave mandolin is tuned G-D-A-E an octave below mandolin and mandocello is C-G-D-A, with strings tuned even lower than that by a fifth.

An octave is tuned one octave below a regular one. so its exactly the same fingerings etc but a long stretch.

@rugshort: on another youtube video.the 4 finger g chord is both discussed and demonstrated by this young player (as well as other techniques) (july 2012). Surprised you did not already take "note" of it.

Can you build a mandolin with only 1 string vs pairs, this would facilitate string bends? If it has a pickup you can use effect pedals to get chorus.

Awesome playing, Sierra! I am a musician (7-string guitars) with a profound hearing loss, and I'm having to sell my mandolin because it's too high for me to hear, really, anymore, but I'd like to find an affordable acoustic-electric octave mandolin. I can hear the lower strings easier. I know regular mandolins are tuned G, D, A, e; what are the octave ones tuned to? :) Many thanks, and peace!
@TheJALOBE9 жыл бұрын
oddfellowfloyd It's just the same but an octave lower. Hence; the much greater size. (8 notes or 12 frets lower)
@カスカディア国人8 жыл бұрын
Essentially the high E becomes the same as on guitar so if you can hear the guitar you should be fine with this

What's, besides the tuning, the difference between an octave mando and a mandocello?
@luke_reiss8 жыл бұрын
I prefer the octave mandolin over the smaller ones. If I could get one some day, I would even prefer it over 12-string acoustic guitars.
@antobeat8 жыл бұрын
Hi! yes...I agree. Not really comparable to a guitar though but I see your point
@banjoplayingbison22757 жыл бұрын
yes,I really like the range of it, small normal ones have a nice sound to them, but lol I'm lonely and the octave seems great for playing solo, or I bet it would sound amazing in a band, but man they are expensive
@ised-52393 жыл бұрын
The octave mandolin is the tenor mandolin whereas the small regular mandolin is the contralto mandolin ones.
@LouderGrawlix10 жыл бұрын
I've said it before and I'll say it again: it's amazing to me that people with this much talent exist, and the people who wind up with most of the money and awards are auto-tuned bimbos and thugs who talk over drum beats. It's a weird world.
@DannyKoel11 жыл бұрын

Luis Miranda No. Its an Octave Mandolin.
@Niven426 жыл бұрын
Nope. Mandocello is tuned like a cello, CGDA, basically a fifth lower than the octave mandolin. They also sound very much like a cello when you play classical cello suites on them. Mandola (tuned like a viola) has more overlap with the octave mandolin.
@Niven426 жыл бұрын
A friend of mine pointed out that you can capo an octave mandolin in the 5th fret and basically have a mandola at that point. However, you can’t practically tune that lowest string on the octave mandolin down to the mandocello range without a lot of fret buzz or changing strings, which the neck might not be strong enough to handle.
@ised-52393 жыл бұрын
@@Niven42 Mandocello is the octave mandola instead.
