Tobago experienced a severe mass coral bleaching event and having reached an Alert Level 5 (risk of near complete mortality of more than 80 % of corals). The last mass coral bleaching event occurred in 2010, resulting in considerable mortality among key coral species, with minimal recovery observed. The IMA has received multiple reports of bleaching around Tobago from concerned stakeholders and marine resource users.
The Institute of Marine Affairs conducted coral bleaching assessments and observed up to 75% of coral bleaching at sites including Buccoo Reef, Castara and Speyside. Some critical species recorded up to 95-100 % impact due to record-breaking sea temperatures.
Coral reefs are critical for coastline protection, sustaining marine life and supporting livelihoods. This bleaching event highlights the urgent need for action to protect our coral ecosystems.
