Ok, as a very early adopter of American Girl, it started as more of a book series with dolls to match, but the dolls were more popular so it went on from there. But Molly was one of the original three and her story is that she was living during WW2 and her dad was off at war and they talked about rationing and they had a victory garden. She was cool. But yeah, they had whole book series to talk about the girls stories and teach kids history. I don't know if they do that for all of them these days.

It’s still a little like that!! One of my best friends from undergrad’s mum is a wildly successful children’s author and she was actually asked to write Kavi Sharma’s book (first Indian American doll). As far as I’m aware AG has moved somewhat away from the trauma though 😅 I think it’s now more about making the girls relatable and inspire kids to follow their dreams in the face of more relatable adversity 😅

Yes! They talk about so many immigrant stories. I feel like Zach would have loved knowing the doll Rebecca Rubin is an Ashkenazi Jew that immigrates to New York after the Russian pogroms. They even talk about Yiddish, Jewish customs and their struggle to adjust to a new life in America. It made me so interested in the Jewish diaspora and immigration patterns that has become a life-long interest.

Dude Addy's first book is forever inscripted into my brain. She was enslaved with her family, but her brother and father get sold off to a different plantation, leaving her with her mother and infant sibling. Prior to the separation her parents had planned that if they ever got split up they would escape to the morth and find each other again. But before escaping with her mother, they have to leave behind her infant sibling! Who wouldn't survive the trip and woul put her and her mother in danger. They get chased by dogs, have to swim through rapids, got leeches on them! And at one point Addy breaks down and declares she hates whote people (which, is fair). And her mom tells her not to because there re good whote people too. (Like maybe, but Addy definitely has a right to feel like that for at least a night). Anyway, they hid in a house of a white woman who is apart of the underground railroad. She threws their pursuers and they reach freedom.

Back when webkinz were a big thing I worked at a Hallmark store that sold them and what people would do since the codes were sealed inside the tag is they would come in and rip the tags off and just steal those to get the codes. We were always finding tagless webkinz in my store to the point where there had to be an employee stationed next to them at all times to be a webkinz security guard - we all would have webkinz shifts.
