So you need to run it in the folder C:/Xampp/php. Type "cd.." till you reach C:, then "cd Xamp", then "cd php"

You need to add the PHP path to the environment variables or just run it inside the Xampp folder

Thank you for this great post. I was really stuck and this helped me to make some progress. Will this work even for going back from 8.1.2 to much older version? I have a website in php 5.4.3 and struggling to get it to work now that hosting providers upgraded their servers to php 8+. I'm trying to set up a testing server with xampp so I can upgrade all the php 5.4.3 code to at least php 5.6, which is still supported by hosting providers.

You can reference the apache 8 folder for reference. make sure that you use backslash instead of forward slash. Make sure also that if you find lines that have \\xamp (double backslash) don't chance them. Only change ones with \xamp (single slash)

@@kidando In apache/conf folder there is only 1 .conf file. Then in apache/conf/original folder there are several .conf files and in apache/conf/extra folder there are 15 .conf files. Question: do I need to edit them all, and how do they need editing, is it to insert the 'C:' before '\xampp'?
