The reason that Goody looks so much like Wednesday (or rather, the other way around) is a movie thing as old as time. It’s the “identical grandson” tv trope. For example: Back to the Future. Or in Captain America: The First Avenger, Kenneth Choi plays WWII hero Jim Morita. In Spider-Man: Homecoming, Choi plays Principal Morita, who is Jim's grandson (Jim's medals and a photo of him are displayed in his office.

As a "die-hard Addams family fan" The show was objectively good, I loved Jenna Ortega as Wednesday. However, in an effort to make the show a more relatable teenage drama, they try to create an element of the classic teenage-parent rift that completely misses the point of the Addams family. The original sitcom was created to poke fun at other 50s sitcoms which were riddled with unhappy families, and here was a Weird Goth family that was - actually the picture of a functional family. It would've been a lot more interesting to see Wednesday surrounded by teenagers complaining about their parents and for her to stand out because she actually has a great family life, despite being the goth girl.

Completely agree. I missed the close-knit family dynamic that the earlier renditions had.

True, but at the same time I dont think she has a terrible family life even in this show. She has some understandable insecurities about how her mother excelled and how she didnt know how to fill her shoes, but Morticia never held them over her head and they bonded and reconciled by the end. Despite Wednesday outwardly resenting her parents, they remained a strong family unit who had each other's backs. Meanwhile Bianca's mother is a cultist and Enid's mother is a ham fisted homophobic parent allegory. Not exactly comparable. It is important to note that this Wednesday is substantially older than most Wednesday iterations, so it makes sense that she can't escape some semblance of teenage insecurity.

@@owenleal i actually think the Animated Movies recently did better at expressing Wednesday’s rebellious phase. And Pugsley, why does he afraid of being bully by normies ? He was literally being torture by his sister throughout childhood (as a form of love). He should be : “joke on u but i’m into this shit” with those bully stuff. Besides from these I really enjoyed the show. Just think it is continuity error and enjoy it 😂

eh I think it was actually well done. They still have a healthy relationship- they had open communication, it's okay if Wednesday had a slight rift. We saw that such thing happened with gomez and hester too in the movie- sibling rivalry, but they still have a uniqueness in their relationship. Wednesday was always independent and smart, and it was crucial to isolate her in a way to move the story line. They fixed the relationship halfway through anyway.

I think that Enid's character is perfectly written for the role she plays. She is the opposite of Wednesday, hence the over-the-top display of the emotions. Also, she is a young werewolf, basically a PUPPY, and when you think about it this way, everything she does makes perfect sense.

Its been nice for me to read these comments, because I'm a 33 year old man and my brain was constantly telling me that she was a very annoying character, but honestly from the very first episode she was one of my favourites and I just liked her so much. On a more serious, analytical, note- you always need a character who is a bit of an outsider, and in a show where everyone is a dark, dangerous misfit, it makes sense that a sweet, sociable, bubbly teenager girl is a perfect outsider. She very much does belong in a Disney movie for 8 year olds, but the point is that she doesn't belong here. It also makes her quite a tragic character who you care about, because the poor kid just needs a friend and she's in the worst possible place to find that type of connection.

I think it would've made a LOT more sense if Ms. Thornhill was CONTROLLING Tyler and that Tyler didn't know or remember anything he did as "Hyde". The writers suddenly turning Tyler into some malevolent dude at the beginning of Ep8 just seemed really cheap and jarring to what they had established with him as a character. It would've been really interesting to see Tyler genuinely believe that he was not Hyde and how at the end he learns that he is in fact Hyde.

@@YariAzQuran One could argue him saying he "enjoyed" murdering was a coping mechanism with being forced to murder and being abused/tortured/groomed. Telling yourself that the pain you undergo and the pain you are being forced to put others through can be so much easier than coming to terms with the true horrors you're undergoing. Also him being a hyde may also influence some harsh things he may have said or believed. Maybe there is a part of him with truly malevolent desires, but he could also have nuance and be layered. I think the plot twist actually added more layers than him just being your generic Nice Guy TM white boy as a character.

I think part of the reason for the love interests being so boring is just that that have no substance and we're not really given reason to care about them. The one thing that I will say with Enid (who I actually really like, lol) is that she really grounds the reality that these are still high schoolers. She is a little cringey, and dorky, and all around just awkward, but that baseline clashes with the moments where she is genuine and more or less mature. It still is very much Enid, like when she explained how she was trying to be Wednesday's friend, but you also get the sense that she'll grow into herself a little bit more. I think the key is that she's a direct foil to Wednesday. Wednesday, even with all her faults, is quite mature for her age. The way she expresses herself doesn't come across as a 16 year old/sophomore or whatever, but she is. Enid is 100% a 16 year old. Lol. And a puppy at heart. And most definitely a kpop fan, has a pinterest, and peruses Wattpad on the regular.

@@MollyMA13 I dunno. Honestly, the sentiment was exactly what Wednesday needed to hear. People are going to do things for/with you to be your friend, because they care, not because they just want to manipulate. Which Wednesday does. A lot. Because she is far from empathetic. Lol. So even though Enid is Enid, and the way she expressed it was very much a bubbly high schooler who was upset, the core of it is far from cheesy, since that is what a friend is, and her having to spell it out for Wednesday (hence why it's a little "cheesy") says it plainly: Wednesday watched an attempted friendship dance naked before her, and she had no clue as to what it was.

Coming to a serial killer who is also a master of poisonous plants (including one you have discussed muplitple times and have witnessed effect of on a 30 yo corpse) without a plan, a backup or an antidote is just stupid. I like Enid's personality because she feels like she's supposed to be very similar to Wednesday. She's an outcast among outcasts, her powers aren't fully developed. She has acquaintances, but none of them include her in the Nightshades; She follows everybody on social media and has a gossip blog, but doesn't have a roommate (and would've spent the entire year alone if it wasn't for Wednesday arriving); her personality is "too much" so we see this as a justification for her being mostly kinda alone. While Wednesday separates herself from her peers, Enid just never fully assimilates with them despite being in the middle of it all. When she fights with Wednesday, she is taken in by Yoko, but she keeps coming back to her old room; probably because she could sense Yoko was just being nice and not actually a real, true friend. When she returns at the end, bloodied and bruised and slopily dressed, the only one that goes to her is her boyfriend at the time. No one even asks if she's okay, but she asks about Wednesday, her only actual real friend right now. And when she sees her, and sees she's okay, she runs to her and hugs her, and is even hugged back. The true outcasts, united and reunited.

I don't think that he is using magic (at least not in the typical sense) but powers proper for a vengeful ghost made out of 300 years worth of stored-up impotent rage and resentment. Like, he is not a living person anymore, but a restless spirit bonded to a fleshy puppet, so an undead monster of some kind (that is why he could be vanquished only by destroying his black heart). He essentially became everything he hated in life, and I would assume that it makes him even angrier and more hateful than ever before, with his powers being the extension and expression of that rage.

She's literally a pack animal that has been ostracized from that pack her whole life (and shamed for it by her mother), so she overcompensates with modern day social media to create a new pack relationship.

one of my favorite parts of this Wednesday is that her character is consistently selfish and it comes back around. the writers let her overestimate herself and lose, and leaned into her "I can do it myself, people are only assets" mentality. later in the series she genuinely begins to care about some people (Enid/Eugene), but only after her self serving motives upend the relationships. this also made me kind of enjoy the love triangle up until she kissed Tyler, because she was literally using them to further her own interests and investigation, not because she had genuine feelings, which felt completely in character. Wednesday was never supposed to be a good person, and the fact that the writers acknowledge it instead of letting her be shitty to everyone with no consequences made this series so much better imo

I just want to point out that Wednesday actually had a love interest way back in Addams Family Values. And for thr most part she did use them but people get confused. The Addams Family are anti-heroes they're not necessarily good people but they're not bad people either and I mean they said in an interview themselves that they were going to humanize Wednesday. Plus I think most people know this but it technically wasn't a love triangle more like a string she never showed any feelings toward Xavier except of like friendship towards the end and even though she clearly did end up falling for Tyler her being Wednesday and got over it quite fast. I felt the morticia/Gomez/stalker storyline was necessary to the plot because it gave Wednesday a chance to bond and improve her relationship with her mother, which in turn progresses her character arc and allowed her to learn more about her visions, how to control them, how to channel the spirit of her ancestor Goody and so forth, and I liked that her mother Morticia was the one to do it.

I hope in season 2 they reveal that Goody is still inside of Wednesday and shows her possessing Wednesday to hurt outcast haters. Having Wednesday going through random blackouts would be an interesting plot point in future storylines. I also want the show to acknowledge how terrible what happened to Tyler was in season 2 and how he was groomed/manipulated into becoming a murderer (I know that Hydes are messed up by nature, but I think there is a clear separation between Tyler's personality and the Hyde personality- like they are two separate people sharing the same body, playing off of the story of Jekyll and Hyde). Hopefully, Xavier will also get more attention to his character because there is potential for an interesting story there with his latent psychic abilities, neglectful father, and infatuation with Wednesday.

lol the show definitely needed to prove it was progressive after the "Tim Burton's racism reflects on his work" discussion from a while back. I believe they tried to reach a middle ground with this show by getting the whitest Latin cast they could and making them paler with makeup (this makes it easier on the makeup team to achieve Tim Burton's characteristic style without it looking *too* jarring, and it also kinda serves as a clap back at the people who said his aesthetics were inherently racist). I honestly don't care about any of it, but I'm happy to see some effort going into diversifying the cast even if his motivation isn't so genuine. The POC characters felt very developed, which is a step up considering all other shows that just included POC actors to avoid backlash and again, denotes effort. I'm just very satisfied with it overall.

Jenna kills it as Wednesday! I think they characterization of the student cast works well to contrast Wednesday, though sometimes at the expense of the character (for the reasons you discussed). My big let down was the writing for the Gomez, Morticia, and Pugsly: they felt way too normal, for the Addams family. Which contrasts really strangely with Wednesday, Fester, and Thing; who were played perfectly.

I loved how Wednesday was allowed to be arrogant and to fail in this story. And I also feel like not only was the romance plot unnecessary, but it wasn't handled great either. Wednesday taking an arrow for Xavier felt like a random last minute addition to help smooth things over between the two so they could have potential friendship/romance later on--like Xavier might've even shot the OP wizard if he hadn't practically announced his presence with the most cliche line ever. Still love the show, but I hope season two can improve on those issues

I think the design of Hyde is at least partially based on actual description of Mr. Hyde in the novel. At least I read it few years ago and felt it made sense when they revealed the name for the monster 😂sure it looks like from Scooby-Doo but this is not a horror series or Supernatural episode. Also the big eyes are kind of Burton's signature move 😅

The way wednesday could've fought crackstone while dying is by just letting goody possess wednesday and use her body with the caviat that once she leaves her body, Wednesdays injuries will come back. It makes things interesting, gives a good final showdown, and gets Wednesday out of the life-threatening situation without creating a convoluted plot line.

interesting, I, as someone who hates most romance plots and interests felt like it Xavier really worked well. If he is to mush of a pushover, he becomes her tool and that would not work, if he is to confrontational, he gets her adversery and they end up killing eachother. I felt like he hit the sweetspot inbetween quite well. Enough patience to put up with her, not feeling entitled to her liking him, but not enough of a doormat that he would not push back when she goes to fare. Not confrontational but absolutly willing to call her out. His crush on her is not random out of nothing, it feels belivable how he finds her oddeties endearing, that he does not imidietly backs of, he does not overly idealise her but is very willing to addapt to her, he does not try to change who she is. his charactersisation is not weak, it is subtil cause he is an introvert that lets her decide how their interactions go and addapt so she feels comfortable with him instead of pushing what he wants onto her, he lets her dicide what she makes of it. Over all, I think he is probably the ideal love interest they could have come up with for her. Enid is to demanding, Tyler to much of a follower so was the kid from the movie. Someone who imidietly melts her icy exterior would have been unbelivable, so it needs to be someone who gets to her with time and he, who she cant figure out, cant showe into the role of tool or adversery as much as she tries has the best chances. Bothy are artsy introverts with a macabre inclination, sarcastic, are facinated by challenges . . .

If you have any other aspects of the show you want to share, please do. Here's my take on what is most bothersome about the show, as entertaining as it was: 1. Family Conflict/Rebellion Wednesday is depicted as basically the epitome of emo, punk, and goth children in the last 20 years. She's rebellious, she doesn't want to follow in her parents' footsteps, and most importantly, she doesn't give a single F what other people think of her (which is problem #2 in this essay). The love that was palpable within the Addams family, one that tied every strange character together in a sense of unity and understanding, is no longer there. Her teenage years are finally here, and she's not giving a single F about it. In fact, you sense that she is hurt in some way, but they don't explain anything about that, so you're left to guess what in the world Morticia and Gomez, who loved her so deeply, could have done to make her turn against them so badly. To make matters worse, Gomez is depicted as a suspect for murder! This is an example of my problem #3. 2. Anger/Angst This is what My Chemical Romance, Green Day, Avril Lavigne, and all those artists basically promoted, and it's something most of us love. However, because this is such a hackneyed concept and outlet of emotional release, it's like a p*rn scenario we've watched multiple times and then there's yet _another_ video based on that same premise. This sort of personality is almost always fueled by some sort of past hurt, betrayal, or just anger at the world, so there is almost always a reason for the angst. Wednesday seemingly has no reason, and that reason is not provided to us, especially not regarding her family. We have edge lords, so Wednesday would be an edge lady. Her edgy, angsty one-liners certainly made us laugh, but that was it. And that's all we're given. She constantly defies authority to the point of pugnacity, puts her newfound friends in danger, and seeks validation for her beliefs, especially on the premise of her visions making her crazy. Gaslighting at its finest! This is one of the only things that makes us root for her - to see her win, because everything that happens in the show only puts her in the worst light possible. This is my problem #4. 3. Disconnect from Original Addams Family Satire or Universe As Shawn Ryan said on this matter, this isn't as bad as the first two issues I mentioned, but it still leaves us a bit flat, "giving us nothing." The classic satire and irony that was central to the original TV show's theme is mid at best in this show. A couple of the movies still kept this humor in their scripts, but because this show was basically all about Wednesday, Jenna had to carry the whole show. Plus, as Shawn said, the whole world of Nevermore was right up her alley with everything and everyone being an anomaly or weird (even though it was basically an offbrand Hogwarts). It's like Lavagirl swimming in lava - you expect it and there is no dissonance. However, that dissonance is what makes Addams family humor and satire so satisfying. Shawn said that the abnormal is normal for the Addams family and that is 100% true. So that's the second strike against the show in this regard. For example, the original masochistic Wednesday probably would have felt little to nothing about being stabbed; in the show, however, you could see a mix of fear and regret in this version's eyes. All those days of playing with knives, seeing who could last longer on the wheel of death? Down the drain. Plus, Thing is basically a dead hand with stitches. Would the original Wednesday cry over a dead hand if she plays with death herself? No, it's not logical. Same applies to Gomez's scandal with Garrett Gates' death. Death was something the Addams family played with, not be horrified at, and I would assume it would be the same during their backstory. 4. Wednesday's Constant Dislike or Abhorrence of Other People and Their Lives It's telling that Wednesday alludes to Machiavelli, because that's exactly whom she acts like. Subterfuge, manipulation, obsession. She uses people for her goals and basically tosses them aside when she doesn't need them. That's some _major_ character devolution if you ask me! The sweet little girl who was oddly obsessed with spiders and torture methods is no longer with us. They killed her and replaced her with a sadistic, Machiavellian, egotistical Karen clone who cannot be stopped because her intelligence and wit always shut her opponents up. Even her own parents cannot escape her wrath as she is a _tormenta_ that will never die - literally. This Elphaba-Glinda pairing was obviously going to lead to "Glinda" getting hurt. And all the friends she made at Nevermore evidently mean nothing to her (until the very end when she finally develops as a character). She will always dislike what they like simply because she is not like anyone else. Remember when she taught Lurch how to dance? Now she evidently hates the thought of dances and is simply there with an ulterior motive. All of this causes not only us as the audience to strongly dislike her, but also everyone around her to dislike her. Besides her wit and intelligence (which there was obviously a loophole in) as a reason for us to root for her, we also root for her because everyone is turning against her and "she must be vindicated!" These are both _very_ shallow reasons for us to side with her. 5. The CGI.

One of the better Netflix shows of 2022 for sure. Initially, halfway through the pilot I was not that impressed, and even turned it off. But then I revisited it with a friend and quickly realized I must've just been in a bad mood or something when I first saw it because I really liked it. That dance sequence is awesome and Jenna Ortega, who was a big fish in a small pond in "You," finally got a chance to sprout her wings. I also really liked Emma Meyers as Enid.

Personally I bailed when they started focusing on the "romance" aspect with Tyler. Under no circumstances is Wednesday a character who dates, and especially not at this point in her arc. She's barely capable of being in a friendship, and the writer's thought making her "fall in love" was going to go well? Stupid fandom-baiting bs.

I’m so glad you made a video on this!! As someone who loves the campy 90s movies, I was a bit hesitant going into this even though I love Jenna Ortega. But, to my surprise, even though it could’ve played out like a CW teen drama, the acting, plot, and design made everything feel so alive. The idea of Wednesday going to school with vampire and werewolves while being an amateur detective makes total sense. And of course, Jenna Ortega stole the show. She made Wednesday feel like Christina Ricci’s portrayal while also putting a new spin on it. I honestly just loved this show so much!

12:39 I actually liked the inclusion of romance in this show for Wednesday. All of the titular characters (Enid, room mom (at first), headmistress, coffee boy, artist boy, siren girl, the Adam’s family themselves [been too long since I last watched to remember the names]) serve as pressure to make Wednesday change her character throughout the story. Maybe color & touch isn’t always bad because Enid softens her over time. Maybe romance isn’t always gross and stupid. Maybe family isn’t just annoying people you’re forced to live with. Maybe a school isn’t just a hindrance to one’s goals. Each of these values are initially rejected by Wednesday until they’re put in danger and she has to realize she’s lying to herself about what & who she values as she jumps into danger to save them. I liked it honestly Edit: OMG & bee boy!! I cannot believe I left him out I love him. Bee boy showed her that she cares about him personally and by extension, the club he loves. So amazing

I like how Wednesday isn’t your typical unfeeling emo kid. She has emotions and can feel happy, sad, or angry just like the rest of us. She just has the willpower not to let them overpower her. She also doesn’t have godlike levels of intellect and plot armor. She’s defeated a decent amount, can be surprise attacked, overpowered and one upped by many people around her, but she uses her losses to make herself stronger. Wednesday who strong female characters think they are.

Without being an unconditional fan of the Addams family, I consider this show to be the poorest of all adaptations. I explain myself : The Addams is about a family’s life and how they live and interact with each other, not a single family member. Plus, the Addams are supposed to be an inversion of the ideal American family whatever it’s in the 30s when they were created, the 60s with the series and the 90s with the films. Part of the fun was they never concerned themselves about how people perceived them, they never cared about the taboos and appearances that others middle and upper-class families were obsessed about. That despite their oddity and monster aesthetics, they were the most loving and authentic family of all. That why most of Addams family’s stories resolved around the Addams family being confronted to normal people and it revealed the ridicule of these preppy people compared to the Addams. But here Wednesday is sent to a school of paranormal/monster kids, which makes her not the oddity or outsider she’s supposed to represent as an Addams. It’s reduced her to the moody emo girl archetype in every school drama (to the point that it was parodied with the character of Joan of Arc in Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Clone High, the creator of the Lego movie and Spiderverse franchise twenty years ago.) Worst, being one of the only human students with no apparent power or one that she controls makes Wednesday the normie around them. So it’s not an Addams family story, it’s a young adult fantasy school drama that marketed itself as Addams family to gain viewership because of the iconic status of the Addams. Just like new Jumanji movies with Dwayne Johnson and Shane Black are just typical action movies that happened to be called Jumanji instead of being Jumanji. Also the YA tropes and its targeted teen audience prevent the series’ aesthetics to be too macabre or gothic in the vein Addams family’s and Tim Burton’s cinematography. But what bugs me the most is that it doesn't reinvent a classic, it combines all the clichés of the YA genre, it's literally the same plot as Hex Hall, a YA novel I read ten years ago, which is also about a “special” misfit teen who doesn’t know she has supernatural abilities and is sent to a secluded school in the middle of the forest for special children (witches, vampires, fairies, ect…) and ends up with a roommate who likes girly pink stuff. But mysterious murders are happening inside the school and she must find out about her family's origins to resolve them notably about a powerful female ancestor (Alice and Goodie). There is also a ball, a rivalry turned friendship with the queen-bee of the school and a love-triangle with one of her love-interests being revealed to be working for a human society who seeks to eradicate supernatural people from the world. I think the show is popular among people who like YA fantasy tropes and the trend never truly ended but YA fictions and their tendency to tone down everything had bored me over time, so that’s why I couldn’t find the show entertaining. Ortega was the best but I'm probably be the only one who didn't like the dance sequence (because of the song that didn't fit mostly but the setting and choregraphy didn't back up) and I like dance sequences, they're usually my favorite part, but I think that for a character like Wednesday I would have prefered something more in the vibe of Suspiria the remake than whatever it was in the show.

So, someone on Tumblr pointed out that the Tyler leg of the love triangle was bad because it was supposed to be. He doesn't actually like her, he's just playing the part so he can keep an eye on her and report what she knows to Thornhill. Xavier's side was bad because they forgot to make him a character. Which is a bummer because I usually love a long lost childhood friend as a love interest. But the scene in the nurse's office, that part where he's walking with her in the rain and talking about his dad, and the scene where he catches her outside his studio are pretty much the only real bits of character we get from him. I feel like there were some story changes that happened mid production and that's why some characters feel flat. Like, they were so busy making sure that the girls were girl bossing, that they forgot to give the boys something to do.

As an Addams family fan, I absolutely loved Wednesday. I had the same issues with the finale as you expressed but my only other complaint was with Gomez and Morticia. I understand that the show is about Wednesday and not about them but they felt a little too watered down and not "Addams-y" enough. Both of their reactions to killing the Gates kid seemed kind of out of character. Like, the reactions were two normal for a family of sociopaths, killers, and societal outcasts. Also, while I enjoyed each of the actors in their roles individually I felt like they lacked chemistry/it came off as a bit forced. Other than those two characters I really enjoyed the show.

I love the Addams family from the 90's movies, because they all deeply love and support each other in their own way, they are happy doing their own shit. What I didn't like from the recent versions (Wednesday and those animated movies) is that they put the family in stupid conflicts. "You need to do that traditional dance for the whole family" "I don't identity with my happy family, maybe I'm adopted", "we don't know what to do with you after you tried to kill your peers with piranhas" 90's Morticia and Gomez would give an A for effort and look for a school that better nurtured their little Venus trap. The 90's version was not only happy not conforming with social norms and expectations, they genuinely had no clue they were even there. They were always supportive of each other and never apologetic for being who they were. This version has Gomez and Morticia scared of the murder charges and visibly shaken from killing the stalker dude. Like, is this the same family who was 100% ok with _putting spiders in a piñata?_ I think because the conflict was the normies freaking out around the Addams family and not with the family members themselves (and I get it is a shtick that can get old fast, and you need to modernize it a bit), any inner conflict if not done right feels like they are ruining the characters. I really liked Wednesday and her inner conflict/character arc made sense and kept her still felling like an Addams. The parents and Uncle Fester thought...They felt so surface level, like people pretending to be them but not fully _being_ them, saying weird and cooky things but behaving like normal people.

1) Addams family wise: the show was not weird enough. I liked how they adapted the character but one of the important things with the Addams family is that they stand in contrast with mainstream society, usually for the better. They are weird and spooky and unhinged and a loving family and kind people. That's the joke. The joke was not here. Also... Wednesday's family kinda took a step back in weirdness but also Nevermore was pretty bland and it did not really look like a place where I can imagine Morticia and Gomez thrive? A good example for me is the blood scene in episode 4 - this a school full of vampires and werewolves and sirens. Why are they all panicking? Why everyone freaks out at every little things? Also the Addams are a very loving and caring family, so why do they let their children go to a school where they get bullied? Why don't enroll them directly at Nevermore? 2) Nevermore is not only bland but apparently everyone in Jericho hates them. Why does this school have no security? Why could EVERYONE break in and bully their students? WHY DIDN'T YOU DO YOUR JOB, GWENDOLINE CHRISTIE. 3) I have thoughts about how the show does the outcast/other theme. Too often it feels like window dressing.

i forgot whose video was it that i watched that argued this, but the video essayist's argument for the whole addams family schtick is that their "weirdness" is supposed to come from them being a contrast against the contemporary social norms. in the original TV shows, they were open and appreciative towards cultural diversity and big family values in an age where the whole american nuclear family with suspicion towards "outsiders" was real strong. in the 90s movies, morticia and gomez's romance was amped up to 11 when the common portrayal of married spouses were lowkey hating each other and can barely tolerate one another. obviously in-text the whole family are oblivious to this oddity of theirs; that whole thing about being a contrast comes from out of universe influence, i.e. the writers. but that's the basic idea of it. i haven't watched the netflix show, but maybe that's part of what's missing? i mean, aside from just the other family members seem to not have that much presence in the whole 10 episodes. i don't know; i like that argument of the addams being whatever the current society isn't, but i guess it may be a bit harder to do in our modern age where there isn't necessarily an "alt" because with the rise of faster communication and social media and whatnot, the typical norms are a bit more frayed and not as dominating as they used to have been able to. this argument puts the addams' weirdness as a social critique, but when technically everyone gets an equal chance of being a weirdo, how are you going to write that?

I never doubted jenna at all and always knew she would kill it, but i am SO GLAD that everyone agrees and everyone even if they didn't love the show, loved jenna's performance because she was truly a star. the overall mystery was pretty straight forward, but like you said there were enough layers that it kept me entertained. I will say, tyler being the hyde was not the surprising part, him being evil was, i was under the impression the hyde didn't know what it was doing, so when he was like haha surprise i was evil the whole time i was like oh no don't do that. i understand that being a teen show, they will have romance plotlines, like even if I don't care for it all the time, i understand it appeals to a big demographic, i was there in the trenches, i get it. i just really hoped that it being Wednesday addams, they would tone it down, or approach it differently. not to be that person also but Wednesday often read to me as aro/ace and i know she doesn't have to be, like its just me, but i just wish they didn't bother with it. It just baffled me how they gave her the blandest, most boring love interests, and the fact that they were both like "i thought you liked me" like babes she has not expressed anything to you??? why are you like this? tyler turns out it makes sense, but xavier has no reason like honey you need to chill out. It would've been nice if they kept any romance subplot to the side characters. i loved how everyone called out wednesday's behaviour and she had to apologize for her actions, more of that please. there are a few drinks to fix, but they have a lot of material for s2, stuff they already planted seeds for, like who's the new principal, or bianca and her cult, I'm so excited for that, and the stalker obviously. also i predict tyler coming back randomly mid season 2 for one episode to mess with Wednesday somehow. - sidenote, i really liked the cheesy joke that gorgons are called stoners, like please

You've probably been told this half a million times, but the reason the show worked so well was because Jenna Ortega had to go back and rewrite lines that the writers originally gave her. And Burton backed her. Today, Ortega is facing "fan backlash" or whatever because many think she, as an actor, should have just stayed out of the writers' room and just "did her job". They thought her rude and entitled. Basically, "shut up and dribble".

My main issue with this series is how they changed the fundamental point of the Addams family. The Addams family was supposed to be a satire of the American family back then. The Addams were everything a normal family is not. They where creepy, goth, spooky and bizarre in their appearance and behaviour. But they also were a super healthy and loving family with emotional maturity and great communication. So by introducing the damaged relationship between Morticia and Wednesday they really messed it up for me. The og Wednesday wouldn't have any trouble with her parents even as a teenager. Don't @ me. That was the point of the family. Second, the main comedy source comes from the juxtaposition between the Addams and the normal society. So when they mention the supernatural school with monsters it was weird. Also, if they are vampires, gorgons, werewolves and such, why nobody accepts Wednesday spooky nature? I liked Jenna Ortega's performance for the most part. But she doesn't quite reach the deadpan tone Ricci gave us. Jenna seems mad, Ricci was disinterested. Anyway once I understood this was meant to be an alternate take on the Addams family finally enjoyed the series.

@@Noa...... Since you seem to keep using that word, let's see: -A teenager in conflict with same gender parent -A teenager transering to a new school and thir struggle to adapt ( A magical school at that) -A love triangle between a semmingly nice guy and a tortured and mysterious artist. -A "mean" girl who we turned into our ally. -The cringe best friend who is the opposite to our main character. -A very predictable plot twist. So no, there is actually nothing refreshing in here, it essentially any supernatural teen drama with the Addams name attached. Once I accepted that, I managed to like it. It would have been refreshing if the writers managed to inject life to the franchise without ignoring everything said franchise is.

As an Elder Millenial and an Addams Family fan, I absolutely loved this iteration of an Addams story. I loved Enid and her oppositeness to Wednesday. I cried when Thing was hurt and Enid wolfed out. I really hope netflix does not cancel like they did The Midnight Club and First Kill.

Hello, it's me, one of the others who has gotten really into the Addams family due to this show. Loved it the whole way through (actually Enid was one of my faves, I felt she did a great job highlighting how weird her surroundings are). One thing that a lot of people bring up is that the Addams family are meant to be a counterpoint to America's dysfunctional but aesthetically pleasing expectations of family; they are kind and loving towards each other, and their humor and drama derive not from family disputes but from outsiders not understanding them. This has occasionally been levied as a criticism of Wednesday, as the tense relationship between Wednesday and Morticia seems to run counter to that thread. However, I think their relationship is well founded here, even as a departure. After all, Wednesday is 15 in the show, and she is trying to prove her independence. Yet, right when she most wants to be independent them, Wednesday is forced to rely on her parents pulling strings to keep her out of legal trouble. Though it is a loving act, it severely hampers Wednesday's ability to act independently from them, which would naturally put a strain on their relationship. I feel like, read with this context in mind, Wednesday becomes a nice successor to the earlier Addams installments. Wednesday is growing up, and as such is going through the same stages of life we all do. Rather than shy away from that, the show embraces the change, and seeks to understand it. Then, as Wednesday matures over the course of her investigations, she gains the perspective needed to appreciate the core of love which is central to the Addams family.

I think that aside from the aesthetic of the movie, Jenna Ortega is a massive boost to the shows quality, holy shit this woman plays so well. Edit: I watched your video further to the point of you mentioning Ortega, and yeah holy cheesus she is litterally Wednesday, its like she is not playing at this point. I have a massive crush on Jenna herself and her Wednesday's performance.

I totally agree about the romance plot - it could have been completely cut and the show probably would have been better for it. Also, as an asexual, I feel like it would make so much sense for Wednesday to be aro-ace, and that is the only glaring missed opportunity for the character I really noticed. (Although, I would have settled for Jenna Ortega's ideal romance of Wednesday and Enid lol)

Possible unpopular take here, but I think most of the praise this show gets is 100% because of Jenna’s performance. The show itself is pretty below average, but her performance is legendary and elevates everything that on its own is pretty bad. The whole show centers around a mystery that no one bothers solving which gets revealed entirely through deus ex machina visions. It’s a love triangle with two bad, boring options. I have a theory that this was a completely unrelated script that got adapted to the Addams Family. Just a few too many plot lines that felt out of character, like how Wednesday was mad that Gomez was possibly a killer, or hell, that Wednesday Addams is in a love triangle.

Three points. Jenna Ortega is amazing. Enid being the "Hyde" instead would've been a thousand times better, no matter how it ended. And I'm thrilled probably more than the average person should be that this show has brought you one step closer back to Tim Burton. 😁❤
