That plane was a 747. Realistically, it can fly even if it lost an engine. If it lost 3 or all four, then there would have been a problem. But even with no engines, a commercial airliner can glide for about 100 miles, if it was at top speed and at cruise altitude when it lost the engines. If the plane were in the middle of the pacific and not near a coast, then it would crash due to lost engines. NOW YOU KNOW!

tomas andrada That's the thing. Assuming the whale was around 45 tons (much more than commercial cargo) the plane would have been pulled down much faster if it had lost all of it's engines. However, the plane only lost one of it's 4 engines, meaning it would likely be able to make it to shore for an emergency landing. HOWEVER: the engine was on fire, and if the fire spread to the fuel tank (base of the wings under the body, big fat part) the plane would go up like a match in a taco bell bathroom on a tuesday evening.
