Nice tip. I never thought to apply this trick on a line trimmer. But I discovered years ago that plastic/nylon parts on R/C cars is much stronger if you soak the chassis in hot water now and then. Or even boil the suspension arms and stuff. I found after a thorough sink wash I rarely broke anything. It reduces the brittleness.
@heatshield
@heatshield 5 ай бұрын
Just be careful and do test pieces if you can when you get into using boiling water. I was modifying a plastic model body for a RC rock crawler. Plopped the old 53 corvette body in boiling water and it almost instantly went from about eight inches long to three. Funniest thing I’ve seen in awhile since my plan was just to soften it enough that it didn’t crack while I cut it, so I could add material and make it wider.
@bradbrown8759
@bradbrown8759 5 ай бұрын
@@heatshield tests are important. I used to flair fenders on model cars with a lighter. A second to long with the lighter and its over. And some plastic parts don't need it, and may deform to junk. Nylon is ideal. When dieing RC-10 parts they came out colored and stronger. But many plastics benefit. I used to detail cars, and black plastic parts would get white stress marks. Wheel flairs, bumpers, side mirrors Etc. A strong heat gun relaxes the plastic and the white mark vanishes.
@heatshield
@heatshield 5 ай бұрын
@@bradbrown8759 that’s great! I just got a heat gun for a completely unrelated project. I’ll have to try it out on some flashing and see if I can use it for the crawler body when I get a new model to make the body out of. I’m not sure what the corvette body was made of but I still have the rest of it so I can test little parts with the heat gun and learn how to work with it if I find another one that reacts like that. Then maybe I’ll be more successful working the large parts on the next body. I like the idea of using dye on some parts too. I never thought of that. Always just painted them or did nothing at all. That sounds like it might have a really unique result. Is there anything you recommend besides good ole RIT dye?
@bradbrown8759
@bradbrown8759 5 ай бұрын

@heatshield
@heatshield 5 ай бұрын
Do you know offhand if stabilizing the water will do any damage to the line? I use about three drops of chlorine to store six gallons of drinking water for eight months. Just enough to keep any growth of bacteria or mold from starting in the container due to contaminants while washing and handling the lid seal and spout. If I have years worth of trimmer line and I want to store it in water, do you think it’s okay to put a drop or two in a five gallon bucket so I don’t have to change the water every year? I suppose I can test it myself. It’s not a huge loss if it gets damaged and I have to replace it. It’s also not a huge expensive problem to just replace the water now and then. It would be nice to know that someone else has tested this and it works fine and I can just forget about the stuff for a few years until I need it. Maybe I’ll store three and see what happens. One dry, one submerged and one submerged with a few drops. Pull them out and test them in a year or two. If there’s no difference between the two wet ones I’ll just sssume it’s fine to hold it stabilized for as long as needed. Pretty sure any chemical damage will have already been done in a couple months anyway.

@@stevesmentkowski7789 , hi, ha ha I was meaning I use up a whole big roll of it pretty fast because I do so much trimming being as I am a commercial operator. I don't doubt at all that keeping it moist can extend the life of it especially if you live in a dry climate and don't really use that much. But for a commercial operator like myself who spends most of his days sweat soaked, the equipment including the rolls of line often get rained on, well there's no need to spend time dunking it in a bucket of water because I really do get phenomenal service out of the line I'm using. Another tip I can give you is it helps to occasionally spray the inside of the trimmer head with silicone lubricant. But do it at the end of a work day when it's empty of line then put new line on it in morning. It will keep the head cleaner and operating smoother. But don't spray the line itself with silicone, it will dry the moisture out of it and make it really brittle. Happy weed whacking!
