1st thing with any 2stroke stihl is clean the spark arrestor in exhaust before pulling anything apart 👍

After a complete rebuild kit and new carb (both likely needed) it was the spark arrestor that kept me from running well. Appreciate you!

Thanks for the video, when I put mine away for the winter it gets drained, new air filter, spark arrester, and maybe a plug and Gas filter.

Good lesson I always check the spark arrester first then the air filter.

Yeah it's definitely an easy check to start off with going forward.

but what if they are both in good condition? any one have any ideas? mine starts then dies out after a few seconds. I got a brand new carberator, filter and clean spark arrestor😬

In some cases the metering diaphragm in the carburetor can get stiff & hold the needle open all the time, which makes gas pour out the carburetor. I'm a little distrustful of aftermarket carburetors. That spark arrestor choked yours up so it had trouble exhaling.

Tightwad.....that's me all the way! Thank you so much for posting the video showing the early troubleshooting, tear down and having the good sense/confidence to post the whole thing. Impressive teardown/rebuild skills for sure. I just put my FS55, with same symptoms, in my pickup for a trip to the shop, but will now pull it back out clean it up....and clean that arrestor. Great job !

First thing I would always check is the spark arrestor it’s literally in the handbook stihl gives you not speaking from stihl tech experience but common sense of small engines

I heard someone say the Stihl's spark arrester is often the cause of bog. Nice that it is an easy repair / not much to teardown to get to it ! I'm fixing up a shindaiwa brand trimmer & this one had a bunch of that same gunk but it was on the exhaust port. Right immediately next to piston & it made the hole roughly half the size. it was easy to cleanup caz it was half soft / lightly crispy. Not a full crisp. That got me tearing the case in half & getting at the crank. I was able to see a bunch of that old semi burnt oil all around & thought.. if I'm going to do this and I'm THIS far already. I might as well get the source of the crap. She is being re-assembled in the morning... I wonder why no one bothers about torque settings for the head gasket ? or ANY torque or ANY bolts, lol

1st check should have been a compression check. 100 psi is minimum. 2nd, you had the cylinder off and did not install the rings into the cylinder to check the ring gap with feeler gauge. Last is arrestor which you CLEAN with a propane torch. 50/1 fuel mixture.

How can you tell of the piston rings are bad? I'm having trouble putting the piston back into the cylinder, it seems to get stuck.

I have a very similar issue on the FS70 but the spark arrestor on this model is a rectangular sheet which I've removed completely and still have the same issue. Any ideas?

Nice video. I actually have the same issues with my FS 55, flooded cylinder, doesn't start, full of carbon. But the thing is, that it doesn't have no "spark arrestor" :(. any ideas what else could it be ? Spark plug is black, and inside of the cylinder (Burning chamber) is a ring of carbon buildup ..

Is the spark plug getting wet at all or staying dry when you try to start it?

nothing like over trouble shooting something simple. 😂 I'd also recommend getting a stihl carb. Cheap Taiwanese carbs will never run right. You're gonna run way too rich and clog the arrester in no time. Run a landscape companies maintenance. Aftermarket carbs are aweful. Theres a reason they are cheap. If you're on a budget rebuild the stihl carb. If you're not just bite yhe bullet and get a new stihl carb.
