Clarification which was pointed out to me after this session: a better word for "regressive" would probably be "conservative." The points I made regarding the error of regressiveness is still valid, but the word "conservative" is often used in a similar, albeit weaker sense. Religions are certainly *likely* to be conservative, in the sense that they are likely to resist change (that's probably a good thing when you think that your worldview is aligned with the divine, you don't want to change to quickly), but again, that is not a bad thing in and of itself. Whether or not it is a bad thing hinges on similar points to the point of regression.
