It's Week 21 of 52 Weeks of Reefing, and this week we are premiering the highly anticipated LED lighting video. This is the week you have been waiting for: LEDs.
#BRS160
We are going to start with the general pros and cons including why so many reefers have gravitated to LED’s over the years, evaluate LED in general based on the same criteria we used on T5 and halides, discuss what you should look for in a LED option, and breakdown of some of the most popular options and finish with how to tune your LED’s PAR, spectrum and shimmer.
So follow along, and be sure to let us know about your favorite lighting in the comments area down below! Thanks for watching, and stay tuned for next week's video where we uncover which lighting system we chose for the BRS160.

After 7 Years, I would like to see what these 3 Lighting overviews have changed at all. In fact, this whole project would be interesting to see how much of the technology has changed. This is still a great series for the new to reef community!

Once again you've blown the doors off the competition. You continue to provide us with premium information regarding all things "Reefing". I've been thinking quite a bit about adding Kessil lights to combo with a nice T5 setup and you've helped me make my mind up. Thanks again for all your hard work and all the time you have put into making these videos, week after week. If your loved ones are missing you a bit more well comfort yourselves in knowing your efforts are not in vain. Thank You, Dave Davis

As a reef veteran of 24 years, I want to thank Ryan for being honest and straightforward in the description of pros and cons in LED's. I agree, yes they work, and yes for the reasons mentioned they are not plug and play like a 250 w Radium bulb for example. Good work fellas.

I've watched all the videos in this series multiple times now and have to say I'm amazed at the knowledge factor alone, much less the entertainment value. Thanks to Ryan and BRS for putting this amount of effort into distilling a complex subject down at their own time and expense! My last reef tank was a 75g in college and 20 years later I now have the space (and budget) to do a solid build. Although I have friends in the hobby they all have their opinions as you'd expect so it's great to hear the straightforward approach here!

As a FOWLR aquarium veteran, but newbie in reef aquarium keeping, I have learned a great deal from watching the BRS videos. The BRS 160 series is a full course in reefing, covering all of the most pertinent topics. As for LED fixtures, I started with 2 AI Hydra 26 HD's on my Red Sea Reefer 350 (47' tank). I loved the form factor of the fixtures, and the unlimited control over both spectrum and intensity. However, I found spectrum control to be a double-edged sword in terms of the challenges it presented in finding the right spectrum settings. I just switched to 2 Kessil A360 WE fixtures, and so far love the simplicity and amazing results in my corals' color and health in just the first couple days. I don't know whether that is a result of my poor selection of settings on the Hydra's, or the incredible quality of the Kessil's, but so far, I'm very pleased. And the shimmer of the Kessil's is just unmatched by any other LED fixtures I've seen so far. Thanks for another great video, Ryan.

This video answered every single question I had and many more I didn't know I had. You guys are really great and you helped me make a decision. I'm going with a combination of kessil and T5. The kessil for it's beautiful, blue shimmer and the T5 to bring out the reds and the pinks.

+BulkReefSupplyCom It's a reef breeder 48" light. I checked my par values and was showing 250-350-400 around the tank. Shuffled some corals around and I think the colors are returning. I'd heard of people having 500+, but thanks to your video I know know 250-350 is not bad.

Great video as usual. I've been using LED's for nearly 5 years now and have found that after about 4 years most LED's need replacing. I have just replaced all the leds in my units as i'd noticed I was nearly 300 par down from when they were new and friends with other popular makes have noticed the same. If I were to buy another led light I would only buy brands where you can change out the LED's as they don't yet have the longevity that some claim. On my next tank i'll run a hybrid LED/T5 unit as LED's can be a bit harsh for some corals. Hopefully over the coming years things will improve but from my experience LED's alone are not the best. Also if you're going to purchase 2nd hand led units that are 3-4yrs old I wouldn't bother as unless you can replace the leds they are virtually bin fodder.

Great video. I went with kessil 3 years ago after using MH for years but got tire of bulb changes and battling heat in the summer. The thing I liked about this video is it gives you all the variables that I considered back then but I was guessing but I chose kessil for all the reasons you highlighted proving I have great common sense. That being said if money were no object I would still supplement kessil with some T5 because LEDs are still a little lacking when it comes to color in corals but in 3-5 years I don't think it will be an issue.

Personally I hate the MP wavemakers to me they are over priced and I'd much rather have a gyre which far surpasses the Ecotech wavemaker which doesn't allow for directional flow whilst to some the wire outside the tank is nice I think it looks awful and their magnetic ability or should I say disability leaves loads of room for improvement. Even the new puck style wavemaker is a vast improvement over the ecotechs at least they have a 15degree directional flow for aiming the flow at the rockwork so detritus cannot build up.

Probably ur best video, but I would like to add my 2 cents, my 55 gallon, 48 x 13" tank , I was going to get two xr 15's, I called ecotech and they told me that they wouldn't recommend two for that size tank, I thought that they would cover a 24x24 , but they don't believe that, also not in the video, is that LEDs get weaker as u use them, also from ecotech, so even if u have them at 40% you'll have to turn them up the following year, so I bought two Kessils, the only thing that no one ever states is that these lights will not go below 10%, no matter what the spectral controller says, they just won't work at a lower level, so dusk and dawn is still pretty bright, but I will say that I had a problem with both, made a phone call and they sent me two new ones as a replacement, great stuff!!

Ryan, another great video!For my tank (the CLS 110), I already have four Hydra 26's. I have these spaced at 12" on center with the two pucks arranged front and back. I picked these up on sale at a local shop. I have a lot of PAR and will probably run them at half power. I very much like the spread, but I still see visible shadows in the front of anything I put in the tank. Now, I don't want to jump ahead of you on next week's video, but I was already thinking I may need some lighting along the front and back glass to eliminate some shadowing. I was thinking either DIY HO retrofits, one 54W front and another in the back, probably using Blue Plus bulbs. This is much like we used to do in the MH/VHO days (showing my age) and you have hinted to this several times in the video.But, the reason I was asking now, instead of waiting until next week, is would a DIY actinic LED kit accomplish the same thing? or fall short? In another words, would LED pucks with LED supplementation be as effective as LED pucks with HO supplements? I am thinking a 1.6"x48" heat sink with 24 LEDs and wide optic lenses (80 degrees) and using a mix of Royal Blues and Blues and a few UV, would help bleed out some of the shadows. One if the front and one in the back. From a coral health standpoint, would this work? Or should I wait to see what you have to say next week about mixing LED's and HO bulbs?Still sanding, painting and staining the stand, so time is on my side.Thanks :) Chris

Shame that you didn't include the Focustronic 1 or the new Focustronic 2 which both get over 1000 (yes thousand) par and the ability to rotate the puck 24 degrees to the left and the same to the right the new Fucustronic 2 also goes from front to back this enables you to reduce or eliminate the shadowing that you get with other lights. The Focustronic 2 also has 2 strips of leds to help spread the light across the tank.

Is their a chance you guys might be doing a video on DIY leds such as the CREE's and meanwells, I know that's not really an area that BRS has dove into but I just picked up a Seneye from you guys and would really like to fine tune in my leds . If not is there a recourse like a website or book that you use so that I could get a better understanding of PAR and spectrum other than chasing a spectrum curve and PAR number. While I understand why you tested the most popular mainstream brands it’s interesting that they are all puck style. A number of the direct internet providers make units that have a large number of various color LED modules which give you full tank spread as there isn’t one or two light points but 10-20 or more depending on the length of the unit.
@SSS-mp8th
@SSS-mp8th 8 жыл бұрын
+BulkReefSupplyCom Absolutely they don’t’ have the slim form factor or wow factor of the puck varieties that seem popular. If the lenses on the module have good spread and you mount them 6 or more inches above the tank you can get good effect. I’m using a 24” fixture on a 30” tank with 120 degree lenses and run a max of about 30-40% power if I use any more my corals don’t like it. I appreciate you guys putting these videos together, they are very useful. From just watching this one I’m going to up my blue channel and dial back my white throughout the “day” light cycle.

I love my leds better than t5 bulbs. In my opinion led are better but make sure you do your research. And they do here in this video.

So what you're saying is, four 54w ATI T5's plus two Radion G3 Pro's at a 24 inch water depth might actually be too much. I need a par meter now....

Speaking of LED fixtures. Has there been any word on the next generation of Vertex Illumina? I haven't heard any news since the European trade show a while back.

Why did you use the xr15 pro and the hydra 26's as the examples for testing? I would of rather seen the comparison on the bigger models 52's and xr30's.. Also even spread on bigger systems would of been better discussed. Great quality videos as ever though so thanks for the details. 😊

do you have 2 cents on the current usa orbit marine pro? I bought one, then moved so never set up my saltwater and have honestly been using it on my African cichlid tank. seems like a good light, but seems cheap compared to this list

Do you find that with the AI Prime, cranking the whites creates a dust algae on the glass?

What lights are used on the tanks at 37:15? I was surprised that the par is so low. My LFS told me sps should have at least 350, apparently the range is wider. I'm running 2 kessils w/ T5s so I'm trying not to burn my corals, thanks

I want to set up my first reef aquarium and I want to have a really close look at all my coral and fish so I want to start off with a very narrow tank so I have all the corals near the glass but I want it to be really long to have space for coral and water volume, I'm thinking a 30 gallon that is 48x10x14tall, maybe I'l add a sump with a refugium larger than the display to be able to try out different macroalgaes. What LED can I get to fit a tank that shape? Would it be a better idea to go with a single t5 to fit the sape of the tank better? Or could 3 kessil A80s be enough? Thanks.

so I need some help. I have a 29 gal bio cube and ai prime. the prime is 8 inch off the water. how high can I go with the cool whites. my local store said 28% any higher would burn the coral. I see a lot of people running 50%-100%. what's ur thoughts?

Great video, very informative. I'm starting a 50 gallon rimless in a few weeks. I'm planning on having mainly coral, and just a few fish. My question is, what would be a good Offutt for me? I need something that I dint have to worry about, while I'm at work all day. programmable I guess what I'm needing but not sure.

I am just in an internal battle with the lights. I really want the AP700. Am I better off with the AI Hydra 52's? Or go AP700 then have the N series Kessils in between the two of them. Man getting pricey.
