BRStv - Saltwater Aquariums & Reef Tanks

Күн бұрын

It's Week 25 of 52 Weeks of Reefing, and this week we are exploring filters socks, pads, and some revolutionary new technology in the Theiling Rollermat.
#BRS160
Mechanical filtration is an important aspect in the modern reef tank, with most hobbyists opting to choose filter socks as a simple means to removing particulate matter from the tank. Removing the particulate matter like uneaten food, fish waste, and detritus from the tank prior to it being broken down by natural processes is a fantastic way to contribute to nutrient control.
As awesome as filter socks are, there is a new technology on the market that we have been testing over the last few months: the Theiling Rollermat. The Rollermat is an ingeniously designed system that utilizes a roll of automatically changing filter pad material to remove particulate matter from the tank.
So follow along to see what method of mechanical filtration we choose for the BRS160!
Do you have a favorite method of mechanical filtration? Let us know in the comments area down below!

I have to say thank you BRS for what your doing for this hobby. This is awesome information well put together unbiased IMO and the correct balance of interest level, scienctific approach, information quality, and relative attention span to reach everyone in the hobby to some degree. I'm a successful third year reefer nearly 1000 gallons of saltwater around the house, and I rush to the computer to watch the new episode every friday!!! Home run! GREAT WORK KEEP IT UP!!!!

I manually wash my filter socks. They then go into a plastic bucket with chlorine bleach/ water solution. When I get 3 to 4, I wash em in our washer. My wife is okay as long as they are washed/ rinsed and soaked in the bleach mixture. One thing I strongly suggest if you use a washer. Even without adding detergent, in our washer there is quite a build up. Our unit has a cleaning cycle and I always use this cycle before putting the socks in the machine. When I use that cleaning cycle, the rinse water is full of suds from prior washings. Most don't realize this because the drain hose is stuck down a laundry drain pipe. Really that water will be washing your socks. If you do not have a wash cycle, you can just run a regular was cycle. Choose largest load/ highest water level and hot water to flush out the residue soap.

I think this video explains the whole nitrate factory term perfectly. You only get a nitrate factory when you don't change or clean your mechanical filtration media. If you can't keep zero nitrates for a month before cleaning than your problem is your lack of biological filtration. That's why I used sachem matrix. Biohome is also good. It takes care of the nitrates. I use a canister filter rated for 25g on my 10 g nano with no problems. People talk crap about canister filters but it's all the same principle. mechanical-->biological-->chemical/skimming

I change my filter socks out as part of weekly maintainence. The roller is cool but no way I could justify the price tag associated with it. Maybe down the road when more companies jump on board and the market demand increases, the price will be more reasonable.

Innovative Marine offers their heater controller in two different models. The first is the Helio PTC featured in this video. That heater controller will only work with their Helio PTC heating elements. They also have a Helio universal controller that will work with any heaters (up to 1000w total) that have a standard 120v plug. The universal model will shut off and sound an audible alarm if the current temperature of the water raises above the high alarm set point.

The rollermat is awesome well except for the price :) If you have a small non-drilled tank what is your best option? A HOB filter with filter floss changed every couple of days? One option that is tedious that I've used is stirring everything up and repeatedly siphoning buckets of water through a felt sock and pouring the filtered water back in. I'll be interested in seeing your guys take on supplementation, I just ordered some Kalk and Bicarbonate from you as I have low ALK but everything else is good.

Obviously an unnecessary piece on this recommendation. But I have to give you the thumbs up on the coolness factor of it. For my tank I will be sticking wit the felt filter socks. I am playing with the idea of mesh pad on top to capture the larger particles in hopes the socks would last a little longer. No idea if this is worth the trouble. I do have to say though, I work in the wastewater industry and this reminds me of the belt presses used to separate water from the solids captures in wastewater treatment plants. If space and money were no object, I would definitely have this in my cabinet. Sadly, money is an object and my current sump is an Emerald 34 and just don't see this interfacing nicely within the confines of a tall 110. Merry Christmas Ryan!

I love how complicated this system is. it is unlikely my freshwater sump will utilize this type of mechanical filtration. filter socks are very simple and a much cheaper investment. at nearly $400 USD for a minor amount of automation, it seems like it will only appeal to those going for the techy approach to their filtration system. IMO, cool, but unnecessary.

That could work, but would be very dependent on skimmer size vs turnover rate. Not to mention that most reefers don't run a recirculating style skimmer. Not impossible, just not very common.

someone help me out here ... to ME it makes WAY more sense to feed the input (dirty) water into the CENTER of the wheel (what is now the output but should be the input) and then make the output the hole at the bottom. this way everything gets caught in the filter ... EVERYTHING ... it goes into the filter chamber and comes out on the reservoir side clean. so, my question is, why do they seem to be flowing the water backwards???

Filter socks are a catch 22. This is how I minimize my disdain for them: I use before cleaning the glass, leave in place for three more days and remove. At this rate I only use 2 socks in a month. Socks are not needed in a reef tank as long as you have a solid W.C.. schedule. Same with the Triton method,- do not use socks ( some still do though). Others use Bacteria sources and that it self eliminates sock use.You the reef owner should experiment to see if they are indeed needed in your particular setup. Me, I hate them-It is one less piece of maintenance to worry about, however, a good tool to minimize sedimentation. So, there you go. But, yeah, I still use them (Mesh, 100 micron) sparingly on my tanks.

One question, how should we dry or treat the bags after the wash? And does the TDS of the water entering the washing machine matter after they are dried out? I've been buying ecofelt fabric for super cheap at joann fabric and sewing the bags myself. I don't wash them before I use them for the first time and they work incredibly. However, its becoming taxing due to the fact that I max out at 48 hours of usage before its completely clogged up and have to sew a new one every time. I have about 40 bags I can wash now but I'm scared to put them in the washer without further knowledge. Tank has too much live stock a this point to chance it.
@testpipedh22a
@testpipedh22a 8 жыл бұрын
+Daniel Mijares I personally don't worry about the TDS of the water being used to wash the socks since the spin cycle leaves the socks almost completely dry. Very little water is left over to dry on the socks. If you're sufficiently curious you could try washing a few socks and after they come out of the wash soak them in some 0 TDS water and check what the tds of the water after is. if it is high enough that it concerns you, just soak them in DI water before you use them.
@doseone94
@doseone94 8 жыл бұрын
+Daniel Mijares I usually just soak mine in bleach/water to help break down organics as I pull the socks and then throw them all in the washer once I collect enough of them. The spin dry cycle is all thats needed to dry them. If I think of it, I'll give each sock a quick rinse in tap water before I put them in the tank. I really dont worry about the the TDS of the water since a single feeding contains WAY more nutrients than an ounce or two of tap water ever would.

I think the Rollermat is an interesting piece of equipment but my concern with it is if you have to continually throw away the paper and replace it as it fills up is that it sounds unsustainable compared to a simple filter sock which is just rinsed and washed here or there. Since it lasts a few months it isn't terribly unsustainable but if your tank lasts several years that's at least 16 rolls of filter paper that you will have to use or throw away. If they could make the rollermat run off of a mesh like material that rolls up the same way it would definitely be more sustainable.

Is a filter sock more effective if it is elevated so that it is not submerged in the water?
@ericlind6581
@ericlind6581 5 жыл бұрын
BulkReefSupplyCom Well here’s my hypothesis on that. Since the filter sock is elevated, water will always take the least resisted path. When portions of the sock gets clogged, water will just glance off it seeking another way out. Hence contact time with clogged detritus is less compared to if the sock is submerged entirely where all the trapped gunk is in the water column. I happened on this thought because I use a media cup with filter floss instead of a sock in an elevated design. Whenever I clean the floss, I noticed that there is dry debris as the water bypasses the debris looking for an easier way down. It’s the same reason why you don’t recommend water flowing down on media due to channeling, well channeling works in our favor here!

+BulkReefSupplyCom the socks are new, actually bought a dozen from you guys about a month ago. I made sure to wash them with a cup a bleach and rinsed them three times afterward and then they dried for two days afterwards. I've done that with all the socks I've ever had and I've always had the skimmer issue.

What much flow do you have from the overflow to the sump in gph??

Personally I still like the old fashion sponge as the first stage of mechanical filteration. It never has to be changed and is a great place for bacteria to colonize. Cleaning just requires a couple squeezes.
@shechshire
@shechshire 8 жыл бұрын
+Jeff K It is but it's also a great place for particulates to build up. Squeezing isn't enough. You have to pressure wash it because there are things DEEP DEEP inside that squeezing won't get out especially if you're using the dirty water from a water change. That's why it's better to just leave your biological filtration to just your biological media. I personally like to keep it in a filter bag so it doesn't get dirty.

So does this sit ontop of the sump @BulkReefSupplyCom, and then the water flows out of the Rollermat and down into the sump?
@JasonBlaydes

Could this mean that one could convert sock area into a refugium? Depending on the sump design of course.

Great looking piece of equipment! :D The price for this mechanical filtration will hopefully decrease, once other companies jump on the band wagon. That leaking bulkhead at 10:24, though... :/

It's too big size wise and I have a pretty big sump? I put a mesh bag inside both my 200 micron 7" bags and that pre breaks up solids and traps big stuff ahead of the bag. Every week wash replace. If that was smaller would use.
@samiam9059

Would certainly use it if it fit. Who knows what will come along next. Your sumps are clearly "skies the limit" so can see no problem for room there.

One thing I do with the socks is they are above the sump water line in the sump so they don't leach as heavy floating/soaking in the water continuously.

Hi Ryan, this looks amazing. Although somewhat costly, it seems that it can be worth buying if it is not noisy and if the fish waste and debree caught in the rollermat does not interfere with the nitrates and phosphates in the main tank. I guess it does not, but can you please comment, also a word or two on noice level. Excellent videos!

+BulkReefSupplyCom Hi Ryan, so far so good. Did you have time to think about the correct flow through Rollermat? It is recommended to be 2500-3000 liters/h. Does the functionality get worse with flow rated of around 1500 liters/hour? Any thoughts on this?

Come on guys... while canister filters can be a pain i agree, they absolutely work if you know how to use them properly and in the right circumstances. I run a Hydor 350 on a 46G bow front with ridiculous success, and i only clean it twice a month. Softies, LPS, and yep... SPS too :)
@simulatedfish1995

SPS require a high nutrient environment so if you're caring for them you wouldn't want to clean it more than twice a month....
