I just started Stoner this afternoon. Honestly, I've been struggling immensely with depression, not being able to find meaning in anything. I've been going to my local bookstore every week for a month and admiring their copy but never buying it out of fear that I'd start and be unable to continue it. I finally bought it and found myself drawn in in a way that I haven't in a year and a half. I also fell in love during undergrad, like Stoner, although it was with writing itself, rather than literature. I'm now nearing the end of my first semester in a 7 year PhD program in writing studies. Stoner is exactly what I need right now and I'm going to be spending my thanksgiving break with it. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

i'm a memoir lover, and to be honest when i rate them its on a very different scale. almost every memoir i've read i've given a 4 or 5 stars and it is mostly based on more technical stuff like the writing and structure. their life is not a plot and the people aren't characters, so imo, a lot of the actual substance doesn't go into my ratings.

@@booksaresick I was thinking about this the other day and I'm not sure like is the right word for this one. I keep thinking about that book a week or so on so I guess it stays with you and makes you think. It had a ot of parts that I did like but overall not sure. I appreciate it but it felt exhausting at times. It was my 3rd attempt and I was determined to finish this time. It is a lot to process and it is a challenge, a worthwhile one though., Would definitely recommend it.

Hey nick, If Dostoyevsky is what you wanna read then be prepared for the best possible literature you can read. I’ve read; The Brotheres Karamaz; Notes from Underground; and crime and punishment. As Jordan Peterson said before “Dostoyevsky ruined reading for me” - May that be the context for which you learn about this special author. He triumphs over everyone else that I have in my small library. His favourite book was ‘The Idiot’, as soon as I get my hands of it I’m devouring that book. If you read this then consider my request my dear sir, you’ll thank yourself for reading him

N.Y. Best Seller simply means it sold 5,000 - 10,000 copies in one week, so yeah, it's pretty meaningless. Also, seems weird buying more books than you read. Try finishing some first. I mean , it's more interesting hearing a summary of what you've read than just showing off covers for something you know nothing about. Anyway, as for me, I just finished reading Heads Will Roll by Josh Winning and The Humbling by Philip Roth. Am currently reading Satan In Goray by Isaac Bashevis Singer and Hangsaman by Shirley Jackson. Not that it particularly matters.

He did tell us about what he read. If you watch his videos, you'll find that he includes summaries and opinions on the many books he reads. Like the rest of the Book Tubers, he also tells about the books he acquires. In case your mother never told you, "If you don't have anything nice to say..."
@nl3064Күн бұрын
@denise3979 with this one, he only talked about one read book. What I'm saying is, he (at least more and more in recent videos) talks way more about what he hasn't read than what he has. I love it when someone gets huffy when they didn't understand the previous comment.
