@@leostawicki7283 definitely know that, but NiN signed over all rights to the song to Mr. Cash because he covered it so well. Even if NiN didn't do that, not all songs that he reacts to are originals, or need to be. Covers are reacted to all the time.

@justinsane1995 A man named Roy Hogshead wrote it and recorded it first in 1944 , I believe.
@tracykingston9668
@tracykingston9668 Жыл бұрын
@justinsane1995 It's a tangled web. The song by Woody Guthrie in 1944 must have been "Little Sadie", because " Cocaine blues " was supposedly written in 1947 by Roy Hogshead and also by Red Arnall in 1947. Roy Hogshed and the Rainbow Riders recorded it on May 25, 1947 at Universal Recorders in Hollywood , and charted at #15 in 1948. W.A Nichols and the Western Aces recorded and released it in 1947 , with Red Arnall the lead singer. A confusing mess. Hogshed didn't write it in 1944 , my mistake.

He never did any prison time. He just had a heart for prisoners and wrote songs from their point of view. He was arrested and went to jail for public drunk a couple times I think. He played concerts in prison though and felt bad for them. The only real famous artist I know of that did that. You should read his book. Man in black. He did have a drug problem.

John's first prison concert was at San Quentin. He struggled hard with his record company to let him do that. This show is also on record. The original album is titled "At San Quentin". One of the inmates in the audience was the great Merle Haggard...later to become one of country music's greatest performers and a legend.

@@dagr.johnsen2164 Wrong again! Johnny Cash did indeed inspire Merle Haggard, but - I never said he did so in 1969. Johnny Cash had been doing concerts ( ? - maybe benefit concerts ) at various prisons for many years BEFORE his big break in getting one recorded for an album ( which was 1968's "Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison." ) One of those earlier concerts was at San Quentin, where Merle Haggard was serving time at that time. So, yeah - that would have been around 1958, or maybe 1959 ( because Merle Haggard was released from prison in 1960, according to the bio. info. about him. )

While on tour that year, he was arrested October 4 in El Paso, Texas, by a narcotics squad. The officers suspected he was smuggling heroin from Mexico, but found instead 688 Dexedrine capsules (amphetamines) and 475 Equanil (sedatives or tranquilizers) tablets that the singer had hidden inside his guitar case.
