I've been using these horns as class instruments for kids getting an introduction into playing brass. When only having one lesson with them per week, for 6-8 weeks, the jHorn is superb at letting kids try out playing. They are durable, light weight and suitable for kids aged 8-11 - provided they have a teacher who knows what they are doing. I've also seen the jSax and Clarineo 2.0 from the same company in action, and they are equally brilliant at teaching larger groups for a limited amount of time.

Ahh! You're playing with your left hand. I injured my right hand and don't think I could play using that. So this has given me inspiration.

I recently bought one just to play around with. Looking forward to playing around with it. Maybe one day I’ll make the jump to buy a good horn, but for now this gets me back in the routine of playing and practicing

If the valves weren’t so noisy, I’d buy one to play around with. Perhaps someone will make one with more quiet valve action (and n brass)

@@chopholtz4950 - interesting, I think a silicone gasket trimmed to the right diameter might just work. great suggestion. if I give it a try, I'll let you know.

@@chopholtz4950 a felt or cork ring could be added under the valve buttons, but then you risk the valves not turning enough to properly port (rotor holes line up with the receiving tubes). Every brass instrument piston or rotor needs to have specific thicknesses of felts or bumpers to both quiet the sound, but also properly align and port the valves.

Thanks, mate. My grandson has been learning on an Eb horn, but I think he may be better suited to low brass (which is a weird thing to say about someone so small). He may be getting one for Christmas.

Which (metal) mouthpiece do you recommend to use to play in Bb? The notes come out about a semitone less. Playing the Bb empty, it produces an A. Thanks

I used my Dennis Wick No. 5 gold plated alto/tenor horn MP in this video. Make sure you have the right set of slides in. They appear to all have the same size tubes which I imagine can get confusing if they get scrambled up by accident.

@@robertlevine1093My tubes have numbers and letters 1, 2, 3 and Bb or C on them. (2nd valve is same tube but has a Bb marker to pull out to). Nice review - many thanks.

So... I just bought one this weekend, arrived today. No experience on a baritone or eyphonium but got pretty good at tuba about 25 years ago (and havent really touched one in about 15). Im having trouble getting just about any fecent sound out of it or any sound at all with the shallower cups. You think a proper metal mouthpiece might be more approachable (Ive read tenor horn should fit but trombone or euph might not)? Or do I just need to put on some time working on the basics?
@CoconutJuice09
@CoconutJuice09 Жыл бұрын
Yes you should take your time building up your strength and embouchure (the way you shape your mouth to play). I would say not to practice on this I would say start playing the tuba again with the normal mouthpiece that came with a tuba. Advice from a 8th grader almost freshman 😭. I actually play trombone well trumpet to trombone and I’m gonna start playing the baritone Saxophone to along with trombone.

Use tuba mouthpiece to because when I played trumpet that was not working for me the mouthpiece was way to small in my opinion. So I switched to trombone and it worked well! Bigger mouthpieces might work better like it works for me.

This horn isn't made for performances. It's made to be played with at the house and for fun. Could easily be used as a practice horn or one to learn on. No reason not to buy it if the horn is your thing.
