Back in Victoria BC I had a chance to clean out a military book store the owner just walked away from. Alas, one of the items I left behind was a 16" from an Iowa ship. Though a HE round, there was no way in hell I could move it solo. For those not in the know, just west of Victoria is a town called Esquimalt. Home of the Canadian pacific fleet. At one point I believe it had the largest drydock on the west coast. I only mention this for 2 reasons. 1, it explains how a shell from an Iowa class ship could be there and 2, I consider it my home town. A most excellent place to grow up. Back in the 1970s, Esquimalt was sort of like Andy's Mayberry. Very small town feel though located next to Victoria, capital of B.C..

I know there's nothing amusing about war & lives lost and/or at risk, but I did find it funny in 1 documentary about the 1st Gulf War, where the narrator said that it did give the DoD the opportunity to clear out all the left over inventory from Vietnam & they were able to start getting new weapons.

Expecialy heavier machine guns. Even bolt action rifles left devastating results. The Americans won the 1st and 2nd world wars, against Germany. They also broke the German enigma code, in the Second World War. (I’ve seen the film) The British may have had a very small part to play in both conflicts ? Mostly owing vast sums of money to the Americans, for ammunition and weaponry, wether or not they were delivered, (decimated convoys) ..therefore crippling the British economy for decades. Providing the Americans with wealth during the 50’s & 60’s God bless America.? Never ashamed to turn a profit.

The tornados has the unlucky role of destroying enemy runways with cluster bombs making them all the more vulnerable since they tend to loiter and make secondary passes per attack. The American attacks consists of surprise quick in and out runs. Though the US has far better hardware than the Brits.

I was on Gen Hoerner's Command Staff, and help plan airstrikes into Iraq and Kuwait. I was one of several meteorologists. My primary duty was to assist the flight planners with weapon selection, taking into account the target data, and weather parameters. For example...a visible system won't work in fog, and a short-wave system is degraded in heavy rain. The computer program I used, the Mark IV Tactical Decision Aid, was exceptionally complex. It cranked out TAR (target acquisition range) and TLR (target lockon range) for each of the 32 different sensors on USAF aircraft. I loved my job..and got me a nice colored medal for my trouble.

I remember that morning I commanded a combat support company and we were told that aerial combat was imminent but they didn't give us a date or time, but that we are now aware. About 7 AM on the 17th while I was eating my breakfast MRE, the tent flaps rattled and a huge roar about knocked our ear drums out... I ran to the flap and looked at two french low level Jaguar jets heading due north... Just in time to see them disappear after that, all hell broke loose, B52s over head, rumbles in the distance, fighters, Helicopters, gunships, scouts, huge chinooks.... all going north... This went on for a few weeks... finally we were taking down Saddam's Army and making him pay for threatening his neighbors. A great force, a great effort. I was surprised Bush didn't win re election, but the liberal bastard press kept saying "read my lips"... Read mine, Old man Bush saved a lot of American lives, He, Colon Powell, and Schwartzkopf were a cagey intelligent team. I loved the way they used our press to suit their needs.. baiting the Iraqi Army to strengthen their beaches for the Marine landing that never came. Ha ha... Good old crazy swearing Schwartzkopf!!! The younger soldiers were very motivated and I salute all of them.
