Correct me if i'm wrong here... Two 9 volt batteries = roughly 1000mAh Each LED takes 20 mA I count at least 150 LEDs on that sign 150 LEDs X 20mA = 3000mA So this sign can only run 20 minutes or less before the batteries run out???

Why not use a single wire resistor for all LEDs (on the common or two on the positive of each group)?

the schematic doesn't state what relay it is. but it would appear to be a SPDT (single pole double throw) 5v relay. the flasher is based off of the use of transistors. but for the full details take a look at the PDF: makezine com/make/fansign.pdf Happy MAKEing

how do you know what size resistor to use? and why do you have to put one for every LED? if the LEDs are in parallel, can't you just put one before all of them?

You are correct. He used waaaaay to many resistors. it's more like 15 to 20mA per LED, but still that's like 10 LED's per 1/4 watt resistor.

Hey Kip Kay, i made my LED Sign and added 12v Resistors to each led, and i made this 9v kit 555 timer chip style circuit added 2 sign, and all THE SIGN LED'S Brightness went lower, not as BRIGHT AS B4? WHY ??? PLEASE HELP ME REPLY BACK ASAP THANKS !

depending on where you are here a few suggestions for buing parts. foam core could be bought at some dollar stores ( i have them here in canada) and possibly a craft store. Leds and resistors could be bought from Sparkfun.com (they have bright LEDs at good prices and quality, they also sell resistors) If you wanted to go really cheap try ebay. as for the printer stickers try an office supply store, for me Staples. Hope this helps and Happy MAKEing.

that was great but i link all the leds and resistors differently. i take ONE thicker wire long enough to cover the whole letter surface and strip small slots for led to connect at, and i do this for positive and negative, as for resistors. i link them all together solder it and link it to the wire b4 it goes to led, works well and looks neater and less to mess up in....give that a try for a simpler desing

@GenuineMW2 But i tried the sign by its self to a 12v Transformer, and all LED'S had 470 ohm 12v resistor to each LED, and lit up nicely bright good. but when circuit added made all led's brightness go weak down? PLEASE REPLY BACK ASAP THANKS!

ok what you should do is make a huge board of only leds then cover it all with a cheap, opaque cover that you can get a bunch of, like construction paper or somthing so the light cant escape then get a stencil of what you want to say and cut it out, then only what you want will be lit up, and you want have to make the whole thing and rewire it everytime

extend the lifetime of the led´s and not all the led´s were at the same brightnes wen they running at 100% but i think 1 rassistor would be enough. Hope could help and happy new year from Germany (yeah my english su..s ^^)

do you really need a resistor for each led?..i did something similar on my xbox mod and had about 20 LED's and just one resistor that connected all positive ends...till now its been working great...maybe 2 resisters idk

i just want a single 9v battery. not 2, but as kipkay used it was 9 volts only by the schematics. so the 2 9v batterys were just used to make the sign go longer on w/o having to replace them.

buy your LED's online, I did something like this for an extra credit project in school. Buying that many LED's in a store will bankrupt you, look online and you can find them in bulk for cheap
